Whilst there is no doubt that the 360 version of Fallout 3 looks and plays slightly better, Eurogame found some interesting things in their comparison:

The PS3 version, whilst lacking AA is fully v-synced whilst the 360 version is not. also, they write:

"Certain texture-based lighting effects are totally absent on Xbox 360, making characters and creatures look more flat than on PS3 and PC. Detailing on selected textures looks to have been reduced, and complexity of rocks when viewed close up also reveals a paring down of detail here. In terms of elements that are actually noticeable during gameplay, these differences can also extend to the close-ups with the in-game characters - hair in particular looks nicer on PS3, metallic items look more... metallic. In short, PS3 and PC have an extra sheen of detailing that's missing on Xbox 360. "

I post this as I found it interesting. I am not disputing that the 360 version plays better. I wonder if they will patch it and give the option to turn off v-sync on the ps3 version. doing this can give FPS a massive increase.

To summarise, Eurogamer said: The PS3 version does not run as well as the 360 version, but from a technical standpoint, it is doing a lot more .

I thought V-sync regulates your FPS? If so turning it off with a game that already has framerate issues won't give a FPS increase.

not exactly true.. some have said the ps3 and the pc version "look" better... but in motion yes, the 360 version easily wins.

umm... no, thats why we talked about V-Sync. basically, the PS3 version could have much better framerates if v-sync wasnt locked... like on the 360 version.

Actually what V-Sync Does is lock your FPS to the refresh rate of your monitor so that their is no screen tearing, Turning it off your FPS jumps around alot and you see tearing in the screen because it isn't a steady frame rate.

dude.. im not getting into this. eurogamer are well known for their technical comparisons. and they have stated that:

that said, i would still rather play the 360 version as it has better framerates.

System Wars Tip #1308:

When you want to make a trolling statement and bash a console/game, add  smileys in random locations around your sentences to make it look more credible. This usually makes you look like you know what you're talking about so much, that you're laughing at your own knowledge capacity.

For an example, see the troll above.

V-sync syncrhonizes with your monitor refresh rate so you wouldn't get any tearing. If your monitor's refresh rate is 100 then with v-sync on, your maximum framerate will be 100 (if your PC is good enough to produce that amount of framerate). And yes, some people use it cause tearing in games can be quite annoying sometimes.

I played World of Warcraft with v-sync on and off and there was no real difference in framerate other than that the game didn't go higher than my monitor's refresh rate.

Turning off V-sync = better FPS

if you turn off v-sync, the next frame can be drawed even if the current frame is incomplete. as such, this pretty much always increases performance.. sometimes massively. the downside is that you can sometimes get screen tearing.

the lack of V-sync is how the 360 manages to get a better framerate.. in short, it cheats a bit. the ps3 version will never draw the next frame until the last one is finished. so it has to do more work.

if they release a patch to turn off v-sync, the ps3 would see a big increase in fps.

There's a lot of damage control going on in here.

Whenever PS3 versions of multi-plats had the worse of the graphical detail, people would be all over that saying "bahahaha I would rather play the version where I can actually see good textures!!"

Now, when the 360 gets the graphical cuts, everyone is like, "so what, it doesn't matter, who cares.."

Hmmmmmmmm, biased much?

Though i myself personally am playing and preffer the pc version i've seen both 360 and ps3 version running for a good hour or so each. The frame-rate difference between the 2 is not very noticable but it is there with the 360 running slighty better, but the texture difference is more noticable. Indoors i dare say that the ps3 runs even better than the 360 (both being very smooth with consistant fps) aswell as looking better, outdoors the 360 runs a lil better as in less frequent frame rate drops (mostly noticable in the mall area around the national archives, museum of history and such) though rubble/floor/wall textures look sharper of the ps3 in these areas. I did witness the ps3 version crash once and the 360 almost crashing (4 sec hiccup after a reload) but it didnt crash afterall...

Thats if your game is running smoothly, the PS3 struggles to meet 30, you expect it to beat it now?

The reason why they lock is simply due to cut down on screen tear

You dont understand what V-Sync is. It caps the framerate, in this case 30 FPS, anything more wouldnt help, but only cause screen tear

In this case, the PS3 cant even manage to get to 30 FPS, so turning of V-Sync would do NOTHING

PLEASE check up before making such sweeping statements:|

No they dont, and GTAIV on average runs around 4-5FPS lower than the 360 version, in a 30 FPS game where it struggles at around 26FPS, that can make all the difference

And teh reason why people care is simply because the PS3 owners are still so sure that the Cell squishes the 360

The bottom line of the Eurogamer article is the 360 version has made technical choices that lead to a smoother and more playable game (0.5's worth of more playable according to GS) and the TC is painfully trying to convince people by selective quoting that the PS3 version is in fact superior. Oh dear TC, very lame.

Here's one thing you forgot to mention.

"In terms of system resources, PS3 requires a mandatory 4.2GB installation, whereas Xbox 360 owners will be able to use the New Xbox Experience dashboard upgrade to optionally install to hard disk (5.9GB - amazingly they have disc space to spare - GTA IV clocks in at 6.7GB). "

Mandatory 4.2GB load on the PS3. Yikes. I hope PS3 owners have already upgraded to a 60GB or 80GB PS3 by now.

I have a question. If the XBox 360 version doesn't have V-Sync turned on, is there any screen-tearing in the XBox 360 version? If not, why not. Why would there be screen tearing in the PS3 version? Just curious.

I'm going to get the XBox 360 version no matter what, but it's obvious the developers wanted to show off the games graphics if they opted to keep V-Sync turned on for the PS3 version.

then please explain why in all the pc games i have played, when i turn off v-sync, the framerates increase dramatically. games like far cry 1 used to have very bad framerates on my old computer, turn off v-sync and it was silky smooth (but had tearing).

in bioshock on the 360, if i turned off v-sync i had much better framerates.. but again, tearing...

i dont think you fully understand v-sync.

if it is an accepted "fact" that the 360 is so much superior, why do you even care? Just move along and ignore posts like these. The more you rant about it the more you present yourself as doubtful of the 360s "superiority."

Oh please, this thread is purely damage control over the poor PS3 version of Fallout. We all know the 360 version is superior so why make another thread?

if it is an accepted "fact" that the 360 is so much superior, why do you even care? Just move along and ignore posts like these. The more you rant about it the more you present yourself as doubtful of the 360s "superiority."

i posted this as i found it interesting. if i had to play one version, i would have to be mad to go with the ps3 one. like i said, i KNOW that the 360 version is superior. but i posted this as i am interested in the technical reasons why...

and whilst fanboys like to say "cos teh 360 is teh most powerful"... i would rather look at the facts.

[QUOTE="speedsix"]The bottom line of the Eurogamer article is the 360 version has made technical choices that lead to a smoother and more playable game (0.5's worth of more playable according to GS) and the TC is painfully trying to convince people by selective quoting that the PS3 version is in fact superior. What by selectively posting certain parts of an article? Which by the way does give a pretty good insight as to why the two versions differ, you just neglected to post it.

I'd possibly believe your intentions if I hadn't read any of your previous posts.

Turning off V-sync = better FPS

if you turn off v-sync, the next frame can be drawed even if the current frame is incomplete. as such, this pretty much always increases performance.. sometimes massively. the downside is that you can sometimes get screen tearing.

the lack of V-sync is how the 360 manages to get a better framerate.. in short, it cheats a bit. the ps3 version will never draw the next frame until the last one is finished. so it has to do more work.

if they release a patch to turn off v-sync, the ps3 would see a big increase in fps.

thetruespin

You dont understand what V-Sync is. It caps the framerate, in this case 30 FPS, anything more wouldnt help, but only cause screen tear

In this case, the PS3 cant even manage to get to 30 FPS, so turning of V-Sync would do NOTHING

PLEASE check up before making such sweeping statements:|

then please explain why in all the pc games i have played, when i turn off v-sync, the framerates increase dramatically. games like far cry 1 used to have very bad framerates on my old computer, turn off v-sync and it was silky smooth (but had tearing).

in bioshock on the 360, if i turned off v-sync i had much better framerates.. but again, tearing...

i dont think you fully understand v-sync.

No you still think you know what it means.

On the 360, its not v-sync, its a FRAMERATE CAP. The 360 has the ability to go above 30 FPS and play as a 60 FPS game, also, its a ROCK SOLID 30 FPS, but at the same time, it cant maintain 30+ FPS hence the uneveness of it and the screen tear. In fact where the heck did you get the v-sync reduces framerates, again, as ive said, it CAPS it

Ive beeng gaming on PC since i was 7, im fully aware of it

Right.. taken from WIKIPEDIA.

Computer games often allow vertical synchronization as an option, because it delays the image update until the vertical blanking interval. This can cause lowered frame rates due to latency (the period of the refresh rate at maximum), which might be undesirable in games that require fast response (e.g. first person shooters).

Even if PS3 has slightly more detail...is it worth it if characters' faces are disappearing leaving only eyes and hair?
