http://kotaku.com/5078237/fallout-3-moves-47-million-copies

The nice folks at Bethesda Softworks are just about as pleased as punch with the launch of Fallout 3, to the point where they've decided to cut loose with a press release just to let everyone known how well things are going. Released just last Tuesday for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Games for Windows platform, Bethesda has shipped an estimated 4.7 million copies of the game to retail outlets all across North America and the UK, representing retail sales of more than $300 million - that's a million times the amount of money I have in my bank account right now. Of course those are shipping numbers, but the sales have been flowing quite nicely as well.

The press release then goes into a bit of back-patting over high review scores, which we've already been over, after mentioning that the game has yet to be released in Japan, where it is sure to meet with some sort of reception on December 4th, hopefully positive. Hit the jump for the full text of the press release, and if you see a Bethesda person today, remember to give them a slightly manic grin and a big old thumbs up.

Bethesda Softworks Announces Successful Launch of Fallout 3

$300 Million Worldwide Launch Across Three Platforms

November 6, 2008 (ROCKVILLE, MD) - Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, announced that its hit title, Fallout® 3 has enjoyed record sales at launch, reflecting the huge consumer demand for the game. Approximately 4.7 million units of Fallout 3 were shipped worldwide last week for the Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows® representing retail sales in excess of $300 million.

Released on October 28 in North America at midnight store openings in over 2,000 retail outlets nationwide jammed with fans eager to get the game, Fallout 3 quickly became one of the industry's top sellers around the world. For example, in the United Kingdom where it was not released until Friday, October 31 the rapid sales of Fallout 3 have led the game to be ranked number one among all video games, as well as being the number one game on each of its three platforms.

Hailed as one of the most anticipated games of 2008, Fallout 3 received a 10 out of 10 review score from Official Xbox Magazine, a result then repeated around the world with perfect scores by some of the industry's most influential and respected critics including: Gamespy, GamePro, UGO, the Associated Press, MSN, The Washington Post, Guardian, FHM, Scripps Howard, G4-TV, The Toronto Star, MSN, and Eurogamer. MSNBC's review offered the observation that it viewed "Fallout as a no-brainer for game of the year." The Daily Star in the UK echoed that conclusion, saying "You can hold all bets on game of the year - I think we have a winner."

The successful launch of Fallout 3 by Bethesda Softworks follows the success of The Elder Scrolls® IV: Oblivion®, which remains one of the highest scoring games ever published and earned "Game of the Year" honors in 2006. Fallout 3 has been featured on over 100 magazine covers across the globe and is available in eight languages. The initial retail shipments of Fallout 3 included both the Regular version of the game as well as a limited "Collector's Edition." A Fallout 3 Official Game Guide in both the regular and collector's edition versions has also been a strong seller. Fallout 3 is slated for release in Japan on December 4th.

Fallout 3 features one of the most realized game worlds ever created. Set more than 200 years following a nuclear war, you can create any kind of character you want and explore the open wastes of Washington, D.C. however you choose. Every minute is a fight for survival as you encounter Super Mutants, Ghouls, Raiders, and other dangers of the Wasteland.

Fallout® 3 has been rated Mature by the ESRB. For more information on Fallout 3, visit http://fallout.bethsoft.com and www.prepareforthefuture.com.

expect on the pc side it will sell for a while. It's too bad they never added mod support for this game. I guess they didn't have time to do it.

No, the PC version is one of the most bugged games ever, read some of those posts, people can't even get the game to start, some can't even install it, others have had their saved games get corrupted. Trust me, I have the PC version(360 version as well) and the PC version is super bugged, its insane.

it was fallout: brotherhood of steel. it was very similar to baldur's gate: dark alliance. in fact, i think it used the same engine. fallout 1 and 2 purists hated it. personally, i thought it was a pretty fun, mindless button masher with a few of your friends.

This would be a sad day when a game as buggy as Fallout 3 is able to get Game of the Year. Oh, and I have the 360 version by the way. There have been tons of clipping, freezing, AI glitching, and other problems that have popped up over the course of my game. I've been playing the end game lately......well not technically but prior to the final mission, and for some reason the game considers my second companion as not dead. The funny thing is, whenever I enter a new room the character suddenly collapses and lays at the door motionless. If I highlight him it says "Talk to Charon", but when I click him I start searching him like he is dead. The game says he is alive and dead at the same time, and I can't very well kill him or talk to him to get a different recruit. So I'm sitting here lugging around a worthless companion who the game considers dead/alive/zombified or something. It is a horrible glitch. Not to mention the other day I walked out of the Iradiated Sewers and there was this humongous ..... skwiggle covering the sky. It was like you took the strider from War of the Worlds and started playing stretch armstrong with him.

You can't intentionally bug a pirated game, it doesn't work like that, pirates take the retail game and Nuke / Crack it.

Just look through the thousands of posts from people who have crashing issues with Fallout 3 on PC, its bugged, theres no way to deny it.

just keep thinking that mate. it's a well known fact that games have been intentionally gimped when DRM notices something is amiss. sometimes they let the game run or seem cracked intentionally but the DRM silently unravels the game with a series of bugs, aiming problems, AI problems, etc.

i'm sorry, but i don't think it's a coincidence that friends of mine that pirated have issues, and those that bought have none.

they had systems similar to this in Codemasters games in the past and false scene releases have also featured intentionally borked features / save systems.

i can deny it's bugged because i haven't encountered a single bug with what is an identical setup to many people complaining while i'm 40+ hours in - neither have any of my friends that bought it. weird eh?

Again, it doesn't work like that, you can't bug a pirated game, a pirated game is the retail game that has been Nuked / Cracked. Do you even know how that works?

Just because you haven't had any problems with it does not mean the problem doesn't exist for other people who have different PC set-ups and different software installed on their PC's, its bugged and its there, theres no denying, thousands of people have issues, thats proof enough.

they're nothing like the reported bugs for the PC version though - these are people claiming the game won't run, won't save, saves corrupt, game crashes. i've seen the stretch armstrong thing in the 360 version - i bought both, don't ask why - i was scanning the horizon and i saw a radscorpion that looked like his limbs were being pulled off by UFOs, then it snapped back down to the ground, it bounced in the air like 500 feet, then fell to it's death, heh.

It was like you took the strider from War of the Worlds and started playing stretch armstrong with him.Dystopian-X

Someone already posted a vid. with that very same glitch, not everyone is having this problem though.

I've been playing the PC version and 0 bugs so far.

Mine crashed 4 times, and hat some other errors. Pc version.

You can't intentionally bug a pirated game, it doesn't work like that, pirates take the retail game and Nuke / Crack it.

Just look through the thousands of posts from people who have crashing issues with Fallout 3 on PC, its bugged, theres no way to deny it.

Nagidar

just keep thinking that mate. it's a well known fact that games have been intentionally gimped when DRM notices something is amiss. sometimes they let the game run or seem cracked intentionally but the DRM silently unravels the game with a series of bugs, aiming problems, AI problems, etc.

i'm sorry, but i don't think it's a coincidence that friends of mine that pirated have issues, and those that bought have none.

they had systems similar to this in Codemasters games in the past and false scene releases have also featured intentionally borked features / save systems.

i can deny it's bugged because i haven't encountered a single bug with what is an identical setup to many people complaining while i'm 40+ hours in - neither have any of my friends that bought it. weird eh?

Again, it doesn't work like that, you can't bug a pirated game, a pirated game is the retail game that has been Nuked / Cracked. Do you even know how that works?

Just because you haven't had any problems with it does not mean the problem doesn't exist for other people who have different PC set-ups and different software installed on their PC's, its bugged and its there, theres no denying, thousands of people have issues, thats proof enough.

it appears i know better than you how it works - because it has happend in the past. they're called fake scene releases, intentionally bugged to discourage pirating. sorry mate, it exists.

2nd, the process of cracking is nowhere near as simple as you make it out to be, DRM can be 'stealth tied' to gameplay mechanics - google up Codemasters DRM and inform yourself.

maybe me and all my friends are lucky, but maybe Bethsoft was clever and it's just a ton of pirates whining - which i truly hope it is :).

they're nothing like the reported bugs for the PC version though - these are people claiming the game won't run, won't save, saves corrupt, game crashes. i've seen the stretch armstrong thing in the 360 version - i bought both, don't ask why - i was scanning the horizon and i saw a radscorpion that looked like his limbs were being pulled off by UFOs, then it snapped back down to the ground, it bounced in the air like 500 feet, then fell to it's death, heh. 3picuri3
Here is one I don't think I've heard anyone else complain about. I was in the statesman hotel doing the Reiley's Rangers side quest, and I went into the room
Right before you go outside where there are like ten million Super Mutant Masters
and started filling them full of lead. Once the dust settled, I started casually strolling through the bloody mess I left on the ground, and then it happened. You know that sound the game makes when you kick a body part around or brush up against them? Well the game somehow registered the body parts as glued to my body, so here I am dragging aroudn this invisible arm on my leg and the game keeps making the bloody mess sound. I spend the next five horus dragging around this invisible arm, and everywhere I go I hear "SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH." It got so bad that I muted the game at one point to keep myself from going bat crazy.

omg. Do want.

hehe, i wish i was recording it when it happend. it sounds really similar to the issue Vandal was describing - but i've only seen it once in my 40 hours so far so i'm guessing it's a bit rare.

Bad luck then, some ppl I've been talking to already beaten the game and are on their second playthrough already without problems.

it appears i know better than you how it works - because it has happend in the past. they're called fake scene releases, intentionally bugged to discourage pirating. sorry mate, it exists.

The fact that some ppl got a phail pirated version doesn't have anything to do with the game being bugged, it's a completely different issue.

4.7 million copies already? Jesus.EuroMafia

3 versions, a what a 10 year old game, its bound to push something?Right?

I dunno. Those are still high numbers. That's more than a million on each platform.

Yeah it's a lot higher than expected, yet I have only seen about 2 guys in my friends list playing it.

But 3 plaforms helps.

I've seen more than 3 on mine.

One bug I encountered was after I reloaded a game after a raider ninja-killed me with a ripper from behind. I had just shot and killed a raider in front of me prior to the aforementioned ninja-killing, and when I reloaded...his body was doing all sorts of crazy crap. His arms and legs were thirty foot long spaghetti noodles, spasming about in the air, his whole form tumbling end over end on the ground...and then he exploded. I laughed so hard I cried.

i had a similar thing happen - but it wasn't tied to me. i was in an abandoned corner store and right above the trigger platform for a shotgun trap (that i never triggered) there was a constant splash of blood hovering above it making the same noise 'squish squish squish!' - then it also happened in another part of the store where they had a swing-trap with a skull on the end, missed me but still did the blood splash repeated in air above the trigger with the sound effect... was really annoying.

no it's not - we're talking about game crashing bugs, corrupted saves, etc. i.e. showstoppers.

those are different than the gameplay bugs (minor) that others experience on a wider scale.

i have had ZERO of the showstoppers on my PC version, neither have my friends. but if you read the comment sections for the phail pirate version nearly EVERY person has showstoppers.

coincidence? i think not.

Too bad the PC version is bugged all to hell, check out how many posts there are on the PC forum over there about crashes and such. Link

Luckily I was able to get my running stable after hours of tweaking, that is, its running smooth so far.

3picuri3

all plat fourms have problems, there is bugs the pc version is the least bugged with a new pacth coming very soon. Ps3 has the must problems i hear.

No, the PC version is one of the most bugged games ever, read some of those posts, people can't even get the game to start, some can't even install it, others have had their saved games get corrupted. Trust me, I have the PC version(360 version as well) and the PC version is super bugged, its insane.

i've heard the PC pirated version is bugged to hell - intentionally.

i've had no issues with the PC version at all, and i'm using Vista 64. my friends have had no issues either.

Same here, been playing for a week, havn't seen any crashes or bugs. Smooth like a butter. If it weren't for that *censored* level cap...

I got stuck permamently jumping around some places, and on some rare occasions the voice of NPCs got muted randomly and didn't unmute till I left the conversation window and talk to them again.

i've seen the dialogue issue before too - usually happens when you try to skip through quickly instead of listening to them.

About The Witcher:

"The game uses the controversial TAGES copy protection system, which, when triggered, quietly and undetectably sabotages the content of the game to make it unwinnable by making certain keyNPCs disappear permanently. TAGES has been found to conflict with disc image drive emulators."

I almost forgot about this bug. I'm really curious to see if anybody else tried to do the same thing and if the results were the same - happened in Megaton so the spoiler is an early one to an event most of you that are playing good karma have been exposed to:
I reported Mr.Burke to the Sheriff, Sheriff comes in to Moriarty's Bar to confront Mr. Burke - normally Mr. Burke pulls out his SMG and does in the Sheriff as he turns to walk away, right? What I did was position myself in between Mr. Burke and the Sheriff in an attempt to save the Sheriff - Mr. Burke goes ape (or his AI does) because he can't get a shot at the Sheriff, he spins around a bit and ends up unloading his clip in to the wall behind where he was sitting. I turn around and the Sheriff is gone! So is Moriarty. To this day (38+ hours in-game later) Moriarty is still MIA, has never returned. I had to hack his terminal to proceed with the quest. And the Sheriff? He was missing for a long time, but his son would always speak of his death - no body. Then one day, much later in the game, I returned to Megaton and the Sheriff was lying dead where he normally stands by the entrance. Moriarty never returned.
