New Vegas was just a huge update, imo.

It's not the same game though, it seriously lost some (most) of it's immersive aspects. It just doesn't feel the same.

now that new vegas has been patched and dlc is rolling out, it's totally recommendable for anybody who's even slightly interested.

Fallout 3 had a much better storyline and interesting wasteland however the side quests and weapons were much better in New Vegas. Overall I would say Fallout 3 is better.

Are there unique and memorable places like little lamplight or factories in New Vegas? I loved coming across random buildings in FO3 and exploring them. I never got into New Vegas enough for some reason. (couldve been that it was borrowed and never given back :P)

I much prefer NV. Much better story, better RPG elements, better environment. The only disappointment for that game was the bugs and The Strip. IDK about anyone else, but I thought "The Strip" was going to be much bigger :(

i got fall out 3 on pc and new vegas on ps3. Both are pretty good but vegas is more buggy. The story also does not have the same impact as when i first walked out of 101. But the story is still very intresting both are good over all fall out 3 is a bit better .

I agree. New Vegas is probably my favorite RPG available on console this gen. While I did enjoy FO3 as well, NV was the better RPG and far better Fallout game.

Fallout New Vegas= endless potential to be a truly great game but fell waaay short... Im assuming its been patched to holy hell at this point but I bought it day one and it was damn near broken. It also suffered from some wonky story telling i thought.

Fallout 3= top 5 games this generation... Loved every single second of the over 120 hours i put in to it and all its DLC. Fantastic game. Dont stop exploring anything, over every hill is usually another cool thing to see or do. oh and keep your radio on... music is excellent.

New Vegas has better voice acting, better dialogue, better moral choices, deeper game play and more items, perks and locations. I found FO3 to have the better setting though.

New Vegas. Better story, better writting, more subquests, better combat and more opportunities to roleplay. Plus it got rid of that disgusting green feel that everything in FO3 had.

Neither can compare to FO1 and FO2, but at least Vegas did brough some of that old FO2 atmosphere back. Fallout 3 didn't really feel like a Fallout game, more like some original post apocalyptic IP.

This... And Fallout NV was made by one of my favorite devs...some of the same people who made the original Fallout games and made Planescape Torment (A game unmatched in Story telling rpg excellence).... The dialog was better, the ability to play "Hardcore mode" where you had to eat and bullets had weight. Weapon mods and contructing your own weapons and bullets using crafting. Fallout NV was just more deep.

It amazes me how anyone who played both can say fallout 3 was better. I have a feeling though, that most PC gamers will like NV better, as it's just more deep and more like the original in the series. Of course if you just want action with a slap dash story F3 is fine for what it is. (which is why console only gamers think it's the best, like they don't even notice the improvements NV had on the game, which is relavent in some of the comments on this thread.. Same people will probably praise Oblivion over Morrowind for the Graphics).

Implying that New Vegas wasn't just as actiony as FO3 :/

They are essentially the same. NV has a few improvements, being a sequel and all, such as the companion wheel, and the dialogue is so much better. The story is still whatever, but I'd say it edges out FO3 in characters. though I think NV could have had more variety in the music - if you dislike hearing "Johnny Guitar" every five minutes, you'll probably turn your radio off for the entire game. Otherwise, if you like FO3, you'll probably like New Vegas. There's also a difference in tone between the games, with FO3 being a bit more lighthearted. Again, nothing truly major, just some quests are more "Lol, WTF?" rather than"Oh, contemplation moment". Lastly, the hardcore option, in the vanilla New Vegas, is a joke. It's incredibly easy to go for at least a day or two forgetting to eat or drink, and then just pigging out for a few minutes to reset everything to zero. I'd also like to mention a number of the improvements to NV were adapted from community mods from FO3 :/ If you play with those mods on FO3 PC, you'd be pretty close to what New Vegas offers from a gameplay standpoint.

Otherwise it's really simple preference. New Vegas has more features and does some features better than FO3. But they are largely inconsequential - the big question is do you want to explore the ruins of Washington DC or the Mojave Desert?

It might be 'better', but most of New Vegas' assets are taken from Fallout 3, so I'm going to rate the third game higher and not the one that feels like an expansion pack.

Original Fallout fan? I've learned to discount their opinions here on pretty much anything Fallout-related, no offence.

It's just another case of the 'unpleasable fanbase'. No, really. Says so on tvtropes.

I liked the world in NV better, the West coast is much more interesting in the fallout universe.
FO3 is the better game I think, better dialogue and random encounters really seal the deal.

It blows my mind how any one can prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas. Everything in New Vegas was better, and it was much closer to a Fallout sequel than 3 ever was. Not trying to cause offence, but I just don't get it.

Not only was the writing poor in Fallout 3, but they fundamentally changed elements of the Fallout universe to suit their own goals. They could have made a game in the Fallout universe, set it in Washington and implemented their own original ideas with some original elements added in for fan service, and called it a spin off. The master's army being so far east didn't really make much sense when they don't have vehicles, and they were ALL OVER the capital wasteland, especially in the city centre. This may have been explained as another set of vats or something, but it just seems relatively lazy. Hell, New Vegas had more original and interesting ideas for possible protagonists/antagonists, and it was set in Vegas, which is much closer to California than Washingston DC.

They copy pasted the underground stations to replace Oblivian's dungeons, they decided to make the majority of the ghouls 'feral', when only a small percentage attacked you on site in the original games (and NOT because they were insane...) etc... I mean you have all probably seen lists from Fallout fans that go on and on and on, so I'm not going to make one again.

I think the only thing Fallout 3 did better was graphics and stability (laughable considering it's a Bethesda game). Yeah the graphics didn't change, but in 2008 they were acceptable, bordering on dated (in terms of the average open world game). In 2010 they were well and truely dated, especially the character models and animations.

You'd be better off playing without the radio, since New Vegas includes the best music from Fallout 1, 2 and 3, and uses it very effectively to convey the mood of the locations that you come upon. It was so great hearing some of the original games' music, like the Necropolis theme (s*** still gives me goosebumps).

The East Coast super mutants never were a part of The master's army though. They originated from Vault 87, where Vault Tec (The Enclave) did research on the FEV virus.

Is this a joke thread? New Vegas is infinitely superior as a RPG, and the true sequel to Fallout 2.

dommeus

I haven't played more than five hours of Fallout 3, but from the time I've played, the writing never seemed poor.

Do you mean the dialogue system? That was the only thing that struck me as odd. I like playing intelligent characters in RPGs and the intelligence options were always written stupidly.

I think that the writting in Fallout 3 was puerile, simplistic and down right cringe worthy(especially the first hours), but by writting i also include the spoken dialogue from characters (which i assume is written on a script for the actors). It's a damn shame i couldn't let it pass because i wanted to get my money's worth, i hate wasting.

OK well that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up. Still, they could have tried to implement some different factions instead of the remnants of the Enclave being run by Malcolm McDowell's voice and the cavalier BoS who just want to help...give me a break.

Not particularly. I thought the writing throughout the game was simplistic and bordering on childish. Compared to the dialogue in New Vegas, FO3 is seriously lacking in this department. IMO of course.

Really? Can you show me an example coz I'm really interested in finding this crap writing a few vocal people really seem to believe. I ask this because I'm very well versed in scriptwriting, and I can see clear distinctions between those that know how to write a screenplay, and those that can't, and the divide is never more so obvious than in games. Well, I thought I could at least, because apparently Fallout 3 is really bad :P.

I'm not interested in finishing Fallout 3, have only ever completed Bethesda's Morrowind, and generally seem to prefer the Black Isle legacy RPGs. I haven't played New Vegas yet (nor does it look like I will), but from watching gameplay videos, the writing doesn't look too dissimilar to Fallout 3. And that's fine, because it's at an acceptable standard from what I can tell.

The only real difference I see between Bethesda and the Black Isle developers is that Bethesda like doing the grand monomyth thing, and Black Isle like to do kooky unique stuff.

Agreed with that. I thought the writing for Fallout 3 was definitely above average.

Yes, the first hours. I'm afraid i cannot give exact examples because, honestly, my memory is piss poor concerning minute details. But i do cleary remember the impression and bad taste the writting left in my mouth. But, i will give you a example from the intros, and let you decide for your self.

Firstly, the Fallout 3 intro:

War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For man had succeeded in destroying the world - but war, war never changes. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters, known as vaults. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them - all except those in Vault 101. For on the fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Vault 101 slid closed... and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die. Because, in Vault 101: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves.

Now, the New Vegas intro:

War. War never changes. When atomic fire consumed the earth, those who survived did so in great, underground vaults. When they opened, their inhabitants set out across ruins of the old world to build new societies, establish new villages, form new tribes. As decades passed, what had been the American southwest united beneath the flag of the New California Republic, dedicated to old world values of democracy and the rule of law.

As the Republic grew, so did its needs. Scouts spread east, seeking territory and wealth, in the dry and merciless expanse of the Mojave Desert. They returned with tales of a city untouched by the warheads that had scorched the rest of the world and a great wall spanning the Colorado River. The NCR mobilized its army and set it east to occupy the Hoover Dam and restore it to working condition. But across the Colorado, another society had arisen under a different flag. A vast army of slaves, forged in the conquest of 86 tribes: Caesar's Legion. Four years have passed since the Republic held the Dam, just barely, against the Legion's onslaught. The Legion did not retreat. Across the River, they gathered strength. Campfires burned, training drums beat. Through it all, the New Vegas Strip has stayed open for business under the control of its mysterious overseer, Mr. House and his army of rehabilitated Tribals and police robots.
You are a courier, hired by the Mojave Express, to deliver a package to the New Vegas Strip. What seemed like a simple delivery job has taken a turn…for the worst.

In my honest opinion, the writting in New Vegas ... is much much more appropriate for the Fallout universe, much more beautifully written, i get completely immersed into the writting. And that is something that Fallout 3 never did to me. What do you say, sir?

The writting in Morrowind was great. Not particulary praise worthy (due to certain wikipedia st yles of informations given to the player - not all), but good, it left a pozitive impression, and i really liked reading the well written books in that game (which added so much 'flesh' to the lore). I also remember those greatly written sequences after you wake up from a dream, added to the depth of the story itself, i believe.
