I put down a few of the more famous ones. (Yes, I'm aware some are no longer platformers. But they once were so don't yell at me). Mine's got to be Rayman. It's unbelievably amazing. Truely

True, the originals were brilliant. Not sure about the new games though. What's happened to them? The first three Spyro games on the original Playstation are my all-time favorite platformer and favorite series. I grew up with those games and they never left me, it's a shame what the franchise has become now.

Neither of my favorite platformers are there, them being Super Meat Boy first, and then N+. I am fond of Super Mario Bros., though, but it doesn't compare to what I feel for Super Meat Boy.
Yeah, really. I don't know how Donkey Kong, Kirby, and Sonic get snubbed for Crash, Spyro, and Ape Escape...No Sonic?! What is this **** *leaves thread.*

I think if every rayman game was as good as rayman 2, it'd be up there with the great's.
nothing on your list can compare to mario.

Insomniac sold the IP after the first 3, and moved on to R&C.
Activision now has the rights:(

And they've done terrible things to our favorite childhood dragon :(Jazz Jackrabbit 2 as far as 2D platformers go. Lovely gameplay and atmosphere (best soundtrack ever, too), and one of the most userfriendly level editors I've ever come across. A true joy to play, even after 12 years.
As far as 3D platformers go, nothing even touches Super Mario Galaxy 2, although I am personally annoyed by its linearity. I miss the exploration of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine.
Well, my favorite platformers all have some of the top soundtracks of all time.
Rayman 2 (Best video game soundtrack I have ever heard)
Banjo Kazooie. The original one. Tooie is far too lame. Not sure how a game scores higher than it's predecessor with as much boring backtracking as that game had.
and
Donkey Kong Country! Best series on the Super Nintendo :)
while i loved games across every single of those series.
Mainly the first rayman and the second, i cant overlook what has become of most of those platformers...
Mario and the nintendo platformers have somehow survived with high quality titles to this date.
While the only Rival i can find is the Sly series. If only Sucker punch would concentrate on sly instead of InFamous :P

well my choice would obviously have to be mario. He is pretty much the supreme king of all platformers. And games in general.
Donkey Kong Country series should be up there, but regardless I voted New Super Mario Bros. If you don't pick mario out of those you are wrong ;). Not really, but come on now haha.

You're wrong for thinking I'm wrong

judging by the Ratchet and Clank games on PS3, I don't see how anyone could say they are the best. I wanted to love them, but they are SO easy, linear, and simple that its painful to me. Personally i am glad I did not buy them but to each their own I guess.
The first three are the best, imo. and the first is still the best overall. Only played A Crack in time on PS3 (dont even have a Ps3), and wasn't as impressed. But damn those PS2 ones were so good.judging by the Ratchet and Clank games on PS3, I don't see how anyone could say they are the best. UYA was pretty damn cool at the time. But in terms of pure platforming the series just never came close to competing with the big dogs. Great games, just average/mediocre when it comes to platforming.
And not trying to pick at your post, but linear isnt really a negative trait regarding platformers. :P

ok maybe "holds your hand" is more like it. It seems to guided in a bad way to me. Kind of like much of Okami, which makes an awesome game suffer from being too easy and at times a bit boring. "Why don't you try drawing a moon", "Hey the bridge is broken, you know what to do", "you know your saying, leap before you think". It's quite annoying :P. Navi usually stayed tucked away lol, Issun never shuts up :P. Anyway....

Oh I agree completely. Thats been one of my issues with a lot of modern games. Some devs just seem to underestimate the mental capacity of gamers. Instead of giving us a moment think for ourselves we get stuck following a trail of bread crumbs.
