Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Very underrated RPG that takes a very long time to truly mastre. I think I hit 305 hours to do everything.

leadernator

Wow, glad some one likes the game as much as I did, the only games I reviewed (here that is).

i'm not trying to bash you guys or anything, but i absolutely hated that game.... with a passion.

you were always stuck doing these stupid tasks, then in the end, figuring out you didn't have to do them at all.

Plus the plot twist near the end was one of the most ridiculous things i've ever seen...

i like Star Ocean 2nd Story much better. again, i got nothing against you guys.

Yeah same, I didn't like till the end of time very much compared to the second story.

Morrowind, FFVI, Phantasy Star IV, and Kotor. In that order.

By the way, Oblivion was abig dissapoinment for me. Compared to Morrowind at least.

Is Star Control II enough of an RPG to warrant being mentioned? Because if it is, it would take the number one spot for me pretty easily. (I don't refer to it simply as "the greatest game of all time" and use a Spathi avatar for no reason, after all-go get it and you'll see why.) Restricting myself fo what most would consider RPGs: -For WRPGs, I'd nominate Fallout. It has the only turn-based combat system I've ever really liked, there are multiple solutions to each quest, and it's just satisfying overall. However, I've still got to get around to cleaning out the Military Base, and after that, start on Fallout 2. (Note that I haven't played either Baldur's Gate game or Planescape: Torment, let alone anything Ultima or Wizardry, so I don't think my opinion counts yet. I've got BG2+ToB, but I want to play through BG1+TotSC first. Don't own PS:T. I've got Ultima IV in Amiga and Master System formats, but I really need a manual in order to figure out just how to play it.) -Going into JRPGs, I'd probably say Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 3, but that's mostly because I haven't played too many JRPGs(haven't played most of the FFs including FFVII, haven't really played a DQ/DW, haven't played anything BoF, haven't played Panzer Dragoon Saga because it's ridiculously expensive, haven't played Princess Crown because it wasn't released outside of Japan, haven't played Segagaga because it also wasn't released outside of Japan-wait, does that game even fall under the mere category of "JRPG"? Anyway, you get the point.)and also because I HATE FF-style combat systems. (Plus, those two games are insanely fun in co-op mode.) Live A Live and Final Fantasy VI are pretty good, though.

Yeah, Final Fantasy VII is as close to a perfect game as it gets: great story, great music, great artwork, great chraracters. It's a shame that RPGs today are all about graphics and copying formulas that are proven to work. It reminds me of the movie industry's apparent motto "why do something new when offshoots and remakes sell just as well for less effort."

Just to be clear FFVII (despite how much I like the game) did a fair amount of copying. And there exist many RPG being released that do not copy (much, all JRPG inherently copy some)or even focus on graphics for that matter.

Oblivion fo shazizlezPepperpop10

Morrowind > Oblivion. Period.

Sure, Oblivion is more user-friendly, but Morrowind is a much better game.

It reeks of Beyond the Beyond, it has a poor development system with little to no persistance, and seems to ride more on it's graphical ability (for the GBA it was relatively great looking) than anything else.

I disagree with it being the best RPG for the handheld as well.

To me it felt like a wanna-be Shining game, as if it was made like one, only that without all the stuff that made them great, since they couldn't use it.

Would have played it, along with many other JRPGs that didn't make it out of Japan, if it weren't for the fact that I'm only fluent in English. That said, Mother 2/Earthbound was great. Still retained that annoying turn-based system, but at least the battles didn't just POP UP OUT OF NOWHERE and showed enemies on the overworld approaching you. Not to mention it's got a quirky, neat sense of humor. (And speaking of that, the whole approach-the-enemy-from-behind-and-get-a-free-turn and get-apporached-from-behind-and-lose-a-turn thing was pretty neat as well.) Too bad I lost all my progress a long time ago. Didn't beat the game, but I made it to that Magicant area or whatever it's called.

Is the first one also worth playing? All I know is that Lufia has a small but dedicated following, much like another JRPG series I keep hearing about that has a five-letter title beginning in "L". And I ought to play both when I get the chance, apparently.

Just one question: the Sega CD originals, or the "Complete" versions, SSS's one having substantial plot changes(such as "Nah, I won't kill you this time, I'll just use your life force to fuel my war machine instead"; not exactly a quote as it is one of those plot changes in SSS Complete)? Oh, and be sure to tell Bernie Stolar "(screw) YOU!" for me because he wouldn't let Working Designs translate the Saturn originals of those Complete remakes, forcing them to go to the PS1 versions instead when we could've had both.

Which ever is easier to come by, in all honesty having owned both, I really don't look back and say "hey those ones clearly sucked compared to these ones!"

It's a great franchise (just those two, which ever iterations) to experience regardless.

Well for those who consider Ocarina of Time an RPG, that takes the win for me.
Otherwise, my No. 1 choice would be Tales of Symphonia or Final Fantasy X. Both of them were addictive, touching, and flat out amazing.

All right, I guess I'll just get SSS and EB Complete for PS1, if I can find complete copies of them. (I may have missed out on the PS2's JRPG lineup, but at least I have a PSone.) (I remember reading that one old EGM article on EB Complete, and it had a lot of neat stuff with it. Unfortunately, that sort of thing is bound to drive up eBay prices significantly...)

I just remembered about a very obscure PC RPG called Albion, and am wondering if anyone else here has played it. Basically, it's in the future, when humanity has gained the means to venture into outer space. A planet rich in minerals has been found, and you're on a ship sent to colonize it. This planet turns out to be a typical fantasy world teeming with life, however. I haven't played it much-just dabbled in the beginning of the demo for a bit. However, those who have played it love it.

Albion? Isn't that a city in Fable?

Oh, and KotOR for me, or Final Fantasy VIII. But more KotOR. That game still amazes me for what it did.
