Without going into spoilers, apparently the Remake has a controversial new ending that fans seem to collectively hate?

Naturally I don't expect the reviews to cover this, since nobody is allowed to openly criticise FF7...but it'll be interesting to hear what the fans say after the honeymoon period is over.

I just did my 13.637 Gig Pre load (I guess the rest will be when it is out). I am very ready to go! :)

Sure if you want to be specific, Nojima was brought in to do the actual writing under Nomuras direction. But of course a role like that doesn't work in a vacuum and being the writer doesn't make the broader idea his own.

Much like how Kojima had guys like Murata and Fukushima writing MGS, though under his direction with the bigger picture ultimately being his brain child.

I think the twisted ending actually sounds pretty cool! In a way, Capcom was already doing that with the RE Remakes. The only difference is SE is incorporating it into the story. Plus, it'll keep the story fresh for returning FFVII fans too.

That being said, of course there's no way this game could please everyone, but the current results are a lot of nerd rage. A lot of people expected something more faithful.

Luckily droughts is only consistent on Xbox and Nintendo platforms. Well only xbox now since Nintendo is on warpath to remaster every game that existed. Its good business, fans there love to rebuy.

I have not played a game on my PS4 since God of War which was released 2018. So, droughts are dependent on the gamer.

Sure, because Sony's two biggest games in the past few weeks haven't been Persona 5 and Final Fantasy 7.

Now I'm curious. Maybe I will get it just to see this change and how potentially "dumb" it is.

I'll wait for P5R and FFVIIR next month or the summer since I have a backlog that I'm catching up on and I'm busy teaching online while taking an online class. Plus I expect later games to be delayed due to the pandemic.

This. I have 75 Switch games and 9 Ps4 games. It really does depend on what type of a gamer you are. Most First Party Sony games do very little for me. (Except Ratchet and Clank, and Dreams)

As a contrast I LOVE Nintendo First party games. So it really does just depend on who you are.

The idea of a drought seems ridiculous these days anyways, too many games I want to play as is.

@ConanTheStoner: its just when exclusives somehow too far between like how Nintendo used to have long stretches of nothing or when last year Sony just ghosted everyone after dropping Days Gone. Xbox has no games.

Nope. I am just very eclectic as a gamer. I have been gaming since the early 80s so I appreciate most of what is out there. I will admit that war games like Call of Duty or dark gritty games like Resident Evil do not really do anything for me. I am a big fan of Strategy games, Platformers, Simulations, Building/Creative games, JRPGs, Puzzle, Racing, Fighting, Mobas, Action Adventure, and many other types.

I guess if you call all of that child bait games then sure. Then again I would call Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, or God of War child bait games. To each their own. (most 12 year old gamers are actually on those games)

This. There is no drought. There are some many games to play it is ridiculous. Between my Ps4, Nintendo, PC, and Xbox my backlog has several backlogs.

Never had a drought of games myself on either Xbox One or the Switch. They both have a library of games that I can’t even keep up with which is a lot.

To me the PS4 had no games. Owned the system a few years, only had four games for it, then sold it.

Bought the Deluxe edition via PS Store about 30 mins ago, and almost done downloading. I hope the day 1 patch isn't fucking retarded, as the game download is just over 90GB's.

Friday in Canada is Good Friday (thus stores close,) plus I wasn't too sure that stores would get hard copies, given the current pandemic.

From what I've heard/seen the only "serious" technical issue is some crazy instances of texture loading. Like the section from the demo is nearly flawless in that respect, but it can get pretty bad afterwards. Basically don't run, or you might find yourself outrunning the textures.

Hopefully day 1 patch works some of that out.

Yeah, I saw that about textures, and it looked ghastly. Hopefully, that can be rectified quick-time.

After the first few hours the graphics become pretty bad in some areas. Low poly, low res textured objects are abundant. Not sure how this warrants a 10/10 but okay Gamespot.

The original FFVII actually has a much higher average critics' score than that. Metacritic only lists 20 reviews, mostly retrospective online reviews from years after FFVII released, with very few print publications from when it actually released. MobyGames lists over 60 reviews for FFVII (including most print publications as well as online reviews), giving a true aggregate 95% score. Which is very high for a game released in the '90s (critics back then rarely gave such high scores).

As for FFVII Remake, it scored 87 on Metacritic, not 86. It got docked points for several reasons: It only covers the Midgar portion of the original game. It extends the play length with filler material, which some enjoy (e.g. GameSpot) and some dislike (e.g. IGN). And it has a new plot twist which is divisive and controversial, with some enjoying it (e.g. GameSpot) and some disliking it (e.g. IGN).

Huh? The game IS being openly criticized in numerous reviews! The biggest reason why is precisely because of the controversial new twist. However, the game hasn't officially released yet, so they can't exactly be dropping spoilers now.

Based on the negative reactions to the twist (among fans and critics alike), I think it's safe to say FF7R (Episode 1) would've almost certainly got a Metacritic score in the 90s if it wasn't for that controversial new twist.

For sure. You'd think (hope) SE would be able to sort these issues in UE4 for the current systems, but next gen versions should be a non issue either way.

It'll be interesting to see the broader reception over the coming weeks. Right now it's just critics and the highly invested fans going at it. And said fans are barking louder than anyone else about it.

The nature of how the change plays out blows the doors wide open for the coming episodes to be wildly different. Vague spoilers, but still spoilers: The force that wants to alter the timeline still persists while the force that strives to maintain the timeline is now gone. Seems this was their relatively safe/faithful game to kick things off, but now they're set up to take it wherever they want.

I think generally most people won't even care. Broader audience might even like it. But no doubt we have years of rage from core fans to come lol. Which is entertaining in itself, first time in a long time I've lurked over at places like Gamefaqs.

Gamespot gave FF15 an 8/10 and the game was utter garbage, at best deserved a 5/10, the story wasn't all that interesting, graphics was great I admit, but gameplay was a freakin mess that didn't need to happen, you can't control the car and although you have freedom of movement at the same time its restricted and clumsy, now given the fact that FF7 Remake has the exact same game play style I'm inclined to push the X for doubt that this game deserved a 10/10, since day 1 I was against removing turn based combat and from what I have seen from the later trailers I'm still on the camp that they should have been more faithful to the original, as opposed to trying to turn it into a hack and slash with the restrictions of a god damn chess game. The game looks good but I can easily tell it will absolutely suck to play, this 10/10 has more to do with it being exclusive (temporarily) than the actual quality of the game itself, not to mention its incomplete, the game just takes place in Midgar remember? there is still a huge amount left and if you think waiting 10 years for each sequel is a good business model then I'm afraid you are the reason why the series has fallen.

I only played an hour of it but am surprised at the lack of cringe in the dialogue. Translation team did a good good taking liberties and/or the original Japanese script is solid.

I don’t know about 10/10 but it is enjoyable. I fully expect some cheese and terribad dialogue incoming though.... which is fine because combat is relaxing experience.

Well if there’s one thing to be said about this remake, it’s that it’s been spared no expense. You can feel the budget bursting out of this one.

I'm a few hours in and having a good time. It is not really my type of thing (not really into the grey dirty city) but it is a great appetizer before the main course on the 24th TRIALS OF MANA! WAHOOO!
