I've been wondering what the concensus on a question about FFVII and Ocarina of Time is...

Many people will tell you FFVII was the best FF (yes I know opinions differ obviously, don't post just to remind everyone of the obvious, this is why I said many and not most, cause it may not be most (though it may be also)).

Many people happen to think Ocarina of Time is the best Zelda game ever...

What to these statements have in common? Well, the historic moment in each series took place in each of these games... they went 3-d.

Could it be the Ocarina of Time is overrated due to the fact that Zelda games were already huge, largely loved games before they went 3-d, and because of the successful translation into 3-d this game was overrated? I think this is what happened with FFVII to some extent... the first 3-d FF garners itself a MASSIVE following... would it have been this way if, say, VIII had been the first 3-d FF as opposed to VII? Would people still laud Sephiroth as the badass that he is if he wasn't in 3-d to behold at first?

Many hardcore Zelda fans will tell you Ocarina wasn't even the best Zelda game, yet the generic fan who knows something about games, but not a LOT will tell you Ocarina is the best game ever (many siting gamerankings and metacritic to back this up ironically, as if those two sites somehow have the power to end this argument)... many hardcore Zelda freaks I know like Majora's Mask more, Link to the Past more, Twilight I hear being called the best Zelda at times too (and once in a great while even Wind Waker)...

Point I'm making this be obvious at this point... were both of these games, and specifically FFVII overrated due to the fact that they were both the first translations of mega series into 3-d and they both happened to do a successful job of it also? If so, isn't this a shallow way to look at how these games are viewed in retrospect? VIII and X (among the 3-d FF's) were better than VII imo (purely opinion spittin there (very few people I know actually got the message VIII was sending, it's actually a much deeper game than it first seemed when you research it a bit look for hidden connotations)). Ocarina was great, but maybe Link to the Past was better... maybe FFVI is the best FF (I hear this a lot, probably the number one thing I hear people counter the VII is the best argument with, I usually hear those people saying 6 ruled 7... and maybe it did, but it wasn't 3-d, so I think some people don't properly consider this)....

What is the concensus on this? Were some of the "greatest games of all time" and games reverred as the best in their series good, but not actually the best, but regarded as such because they were the first big 3-d leap? (Yes, I realize some series truly did excel at their first 3-d attempt, for instance, I feel that Metal Gear Solid was the best Metal Gear game and it happened to be the first 3-d, but I don't think that was the reason it was best, I actually just thought it was best straight up).

What do yall think?

VII is far from the best Final Fantasy.

IV > VI > XII > IX > X > V > VII > XI > X-2 > VIII

It comes 7th among Final Fantasy games. It is massively overated.

i liked ff8 more than ff7. A more complete ending somewhat. FF7 had a great setting tho. Gameplay was boring after a while. The story is what kept me going .

EDIT: I was going to respond to your other question TC i was just merely reserving a space. but now i won't since since your awful attitude put me off.

If you're not intelligent enough to understand the timing of this post or the wording and message within it, then don't respond. Do yall think Ocarina and specifically FFVII were overrated, looking back now (hint, part of the reasoning for the timing on this relates to a certain game that came out for psp recently, DUH) because they were their series first 3-d iterations? I'm starting to think so...

imho 7 wasnt overrated at all. take away all that 3d graphical stuff and put it back on FF6 style 2d and u would still have a crackin game imho. the game strength was not in its graphics. like other great FF games, its strength game from a great story, characters, game mechanics and music...all of which were fantastic in 7 imho. the 3d bits helped it along a bit sure....but they didnt make the game.

There are just too many rabid fans of each game for there to be any war won against them. It's a shame too because a lot of the FF VII fans refuse to play anything that came before it.

Even though FF7 is my favorite FF game. I do give respect to the past games. I just don't have that much time on my hands to play all those RPG's:P. Another reason I love FF7 so much was because it poped my RPG cherry. FF7 got me into this great genera.

No such thing as "emos" when VII came out, it came out long before "emos" existed. If you argue that emos were rampant anywhere in the world in 1997, I think you'll find you are wrong.

People don't get that back when it came out, it was the first major RPG for the psone, arguably sure, but, it was the first majorly successful (sales wise, hype wise) JRPG for the psone in the EU and North America. Without it, better FF games like III wouldn't have been made/sold so well for the DS and in re-release...

Truth is, it may not have been better than *insert your psone obscure jprg here*, but, it was a massive success, and moved the FF name onto an entirely new demographic from the NES/SNES titles.

i think what you're taling about has a lot to do with it. but that's not the ONLY reason. i think for a lot of people (i hear this a lot from the people that say its the best game ever) that FF7 was their first rpg so i think that could be another reason for why they think its best. another reason is probably because at some point, it was considered cool to like popular things and ff7 just happened to be one of those things... with their new "cool"/"badass" character designs. the older FFs do not have the new "hip" char designs nor are they in 3D (which is what you're saying) so they cant be considered best games ever, according to them.

personally i liked 6 a lot more than 7

Overall I thought X was better than VII. VII is hailed as the best though probably because of the characters. When it comes to RPGs it's all about connections. In X I didn't like many of the characters except Auron. In VII I liked all the characters except Yuffie (don't ask me why).

I think you'll find the whole emo movement happened years after FFVII, (many say 2002) and most "emos" have never even heard of VII. It was created, like most fashion styles, by a musical genre, and the musicians who adopted such a look.

There wasn't much to the gameplay in FF7. It just had great story and amazing style/presentation. A bit overrated but it was just a joy to watch. It was more like a story or movie/passive entertainment then a game, however. Most Final Fantasies are like this actually. I can see how you would say the game is overrated, but anybody that says it's not fun is probably deluding themselves. If you want a pure gameplay type of game then it's probably not for you because the gameplay really sucks and there's hardly any balance or thought put into the stats etc.

Of course anything can get old but the first time I played it just sucked me in and kind of mesmerizmed me. It helped the RPG genre for the better. There was lots of clones for better or worse but it was a gem.

I found FFX to be one of the most convoluted and contrived stories in the entire series. Characters were not endearing. Story was action-packed by not emotion-drawing. Ending left me wanting for a better reason.

Gameplay was just fine...but the story is what drives FF. The story was a ginormous letdown for me.

What is the concensus on this? Were some of the "greatest games of all time" and games reverred as the best in their series good, but not actually the best, but regarded as such because they were the first big 3-d leap? (Yes, I realize some series truly did excel at their first 3-d attempt, for instance, I feel that Metal Gear Solid was the best Metal Gear game and it happened to be the first 3-d, but I don't think that was the reason it was best, I actually just thought it was best straight up).

What do yall think?

ScoopyMcScoop

first of all, my favorite final fantasy was 6 (3 in the u.s.) and my favorite zelda was a link to the past on the snes.

and final fantasy 7 was not 3d, it was 2d with static backgrounds just like all the other final fantasys up until 12.

final fantasy 7 was so popular because of the photorealistic backgrounds (everyone bought it because of this) the story was ok but i didnt think it was that great myself.

i havent really liked the zelda games since they went 3d. to me it feels like they lost something in the transition (im not sure what)

I personally think 7 is one of the best RPG's I have ever played, it had a great story, setting, and deep gameplay.

As for LOZ:OOC I thought wind waker was the best in the series. However in the end it all comes down to opinion huh?

I can't speak for FF but for OoT on the other hand, I can.

I remember when I got my N64 many years ago in the 2nd grade. I didn't have a SNES before that, and I had been playing the same games on my NES since the age of one. Although I knew of Zelda, that was pretty much it. I wasn't aware that the series was epic or anything like that. I believe the most Zelda exposure I had was on a friends SNES for a bit, but not much.

That all said, OoT became my favorite game out of my entire massive N64 game collection. I never knew that the game was so critically aclaimed by everyone as I didn't have the internet or have Nintnedo Power (or other gaming related mags). I must have beaten that game start to finish at least 50+ times, and 100% cleared it as a child. I played my other great games a lot and beat them many times over also, but never to the same extent as OoT. I absolutely loved, and still love, that game.

So I guess the point of this story is, I, shielded from the knowledge of mass acceptance, adored OoT over the rest of my games (which I found out when I got older that they were some of the best titles for the N64). That should say something about weither it was overrated or not.

yeah but Emo's loved it and there are a lot of Emo's out there

Andrew_Xavier

No such thing as "emos" when VII came out, it came out long before "emos" existed. If you argue that emos were rampant anywhere in the world in 1997, I think you'll find you are wrong.

People don't get that back when it came out, it was the first major RPG for the psone, arguably sure, but, it was the first majorly successful (sales wise, hype wise) JRPG for the psone in the EU and North America. Without it, better FF games like III wouldn't have been made/sold so well for the DS and in re-release...

Truth is, it may not have been better than *insert your psone obscure jprg here*, but, it was a massive success, and moved the FF name onto an entirely new demographic from the NES/SNES titles.

correct

i remember the only two ps1 rpgs we had were wild arms and a really crappy rpg i forget the name of it. i liked wild arms though.

and ff7 was the first on the system that was hyped to halo proportions.

This has got to be a joke thread. FFVII was one of the greatest RPGs. It combined fantastic Storytelling, Insane Visuals for the time, and was probaly teh first game to make a Large Fanbase Cry Global from just one scene. Not only that, but its a game that you could play 11 years later and still find it amazing.

i am not a EMO and i think FF7 is great, but then agian, i was'nt bothered when Aeris died either.

At first I was like wow she died. Now I dont even care. Hell now that I think about it she was kind B$%#&. I mean she was only interested in cloud because he looked like zack and thats it. Now that shes dead she can be with zack.

I think these are two examples of the right game coming out at just the right time. Looking back, I totally agree. Neither FF7 nor Ocarina merit the mythical and lefendary status that people have hoisted upon them. These were just two games that, in their time, exceeded people's expectations, appealed to all gamers and attracted a new generation of gamers to the series, and were just solid games.

But I don't think that these games deserve the treatment people give them, acting as if no Zelda game can ever come close to Ocarina or no FF game will ever rival 7. Most of the time, I find these comments are made by casuals who were introduced to the series with these two games and because they were both extremely successful as well as good, they act like these were perfect games that can never be topped.

They were good, but I think they were far from great. Certainly not unbeatable if you ask me. I can think of 2 Zelda games I think are better than Ocarina, and about 6 FF games I think about better than 7.

FF7 is the most overrated game of all time, yes even more so than all Halo games combined.
