Ahh. Its old. So, lets all think we're smart by pointing that out, instead of addressing what he says. It should get an award for the most overated piece of Star Trek: The Next Generation-nerdiness ever. Bright blue soldiers firing pink rays at silly monsters.
ANYONE over 13 or who isn't a virgin find that appealing?

Apparantely quite a lot do.
I read the thread title and knew exactly what the link was going to be...sighMedjai
Same here. Knew it was going to be Zero Punctuation.
And while Yahtzee makes sever good points about the game he did completely and willingly neglected the two things about Halo (The series in general) and Halo 3 that I enjoy the most. The story, and the multiplayer. I was lined up at 12:01 am Sept 25th outside EB games because I didn't want to wait one second longer than I had to to see how the story ended.
And there are few things that i enjoy more than going on X-Box live with my friends from home and playing through the Campaign on legendary, or screwing around in forge, or playing matchmaking/custom games. Just screwing around, having a good (often great) laugh at the WTF moments you often encounter while playing Halo.
I wouldn't say this review is wrong. far from it. Like I said, Yahtzee makes many sound points about the game. However I wouldn't say it is exactly right either, as the area where I feel that Halo is an absolute triumph are, again, neglected.
But to each his won and all that respect for others opinion crap.

I can see how age factors in. Mental maturity and all that. But what does the query about peoples virginity have to do with anything? Do you have access to data from some sort of psychological study I havn't heard about, or are you just being an a**hole who likes to come down on people?
His reviews may be filled with sarcasm and scorn but I genuinely feel Halo 3 should of scored no more than 8/10. It is pitiful that so-called 'professional' reviews allowed themselves to be worked into a lather by the hype machine of Halo 3. If we take the game on its own merits we find an entertaining and robust multiplayer component and a truly dull, soulless and brain-dead single player component. Halo 3 is so successful because it appeals to the lowest common denominator, very little thought is required. Plus there was an undefinable lethargy about the whole atmosphere, the weapons felt so light and insignificant and after playing Metroid Prime 3 the whole artistry seemed so bland and unimaginative.
It is a real shame that Halo manages to garner such undeserved praise and hysteria, well done to the reviewers who kept their feet planted and their eyes focussed amisdt the flurry of mass frenzy.

Maybe if the cows think about it, the game was just that freaking good.
Very old. But yes, I agree. Halo 3 is an avarage game. Nothing special. It's good stuff for casuals I guess, but experienced gamers probably want more depth from their games. -Aus-
Ok, you dont think Halo is anything special. Fine, thats your opinion. But then you go on to suggest that its good for casuals, but experienced players want more? What? No offense, but I find it a bit hard to chew coming from someone with a gamer score of under 1500 telling me that I am apparently casual. Not to mention that I have been playing games since the Atari 2600, etc. etc. I am definitely a hardcore player, nothing casual here at all. And I LOVE Halo.

A sizeable chunk did, hence the rather large backlash and air of dissatisfaction among many parts of the gaming community. I found the game to be severely underwhelming and mindless, Halo is the opium of the gaming world.

*Edit: I actually find it funny, when 1 source gives Ratchet and Clank a lower score than the rest it's "Teh Biased!" but when 1 source gives Halo or Gears a lower score it's "Teh honesty!" Gotta love system wars.

Amen to that!!!!
Cows can lie and try to twist things their way...but they can't stop their console from going down in flames.

Must be quite empty basing your opinions on two digits and a decimal point, I do not care about the score or the sales I care about the artistic merits of the game. A game that sells so well and is regarded as the 'standard' for FPS is bound to be mimicked, a shame as this is detrimental for the industry as a whole in terms of progression from teenage nonsense like Halo 3. It is not Halo 3 I am particularly concerned with, it is the ideas it represents and the strength it has in swaying the direction of the industry.

First off, I don't like Halo, but I played with a college friends and I must say, yes the game is a work of art, from the story, the music, and the gameplay. That is why it got the score it deserved. Cows, just can't deal with the fact that the game is that freaking good.Cows cry foul on GS when a 360 game gets AAA, and when a PS3 game flops,so they do the next bes thing, come up with rediculous conspiracy theories, tell everyone to "just wait", and bash 360, Sony had it's time at the top, and it seems sony has gone mad with power, and has become it's own worst enemy. Like I said the game got the score it deserved.

Halo 3 is a shamelessly populist game, it is generic and conservative in almost every aspect from character and level design, sound, art style and narrative. It is a rock solid game, make no mistake about that, but it leaves people like myself who crave something different, new and exciting, feeling disappointed. I don't know where all this 'Cow' nonense is coming from, I do not even own a Sony console since my PS2 broke two years ago.
Actually I'll cut the music a little slack, although it is sparse and non-existant much of the time.

So what recently was released that you believe was better then Halo 3? Last time I checked most games were based on previous designs in some way or another. Anyway the market doesn't cater for you alone so I think you should put away your Halo hate and just deal with this fact.

Hey, I call it as I see it, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it isn't a frog. The game score is deserving, and theres nothing that can be done about it.

Well recently I have been playing Metroid Prime 3 which is a trulymajestic game, visually, aurally and gameplay wise. The level design is seamless, organic and superb. The narrative is lacking, but the scanning does an excellent job of piecing together alien worlds and making them believeable. I have also been playing Hotel Dusk on DS, which again is artistically excellent with some quality writing. I prefer my games to make me think, Halo does not require that of the player. I do not think it is 'Halo' hate, I am voicing legitimate criticisms that have been touched upon by others (the folks over at Destructoid, for example). I want to see games evolve as an art form, we should not subjugate creativity for the sake of marketability.

Art is creativity.
Not that this is a bad (albeit incredibly sarcastic) review, but why do Halophobes think that only negative reviews are honest ones?D0013ER
Same thing happened with Gamespot and Twilight Princess. "GAMESPOT IS THE ONLY HONEST REVIEWER THAT'S NOT AFRAID TO SCRORE IT BELOW AAA"
It's just something to fall back on when a game gets rave reviews.

Metriod Prime 3 and Hotel Dusk are original? The core design in hotel dusk goes back to 80's adventure games and MP3 was very similar to previous games in the series. To each his own but I don't consider those games to be good examples of originality. Nintendo is very aware of marketability and that's why they have used an already popular series with Metriod Prime rather then creating a new IP. It amazes me you think the developers were not concerned about marketability, especially Nintendo.

You asked what I had been playing recently, you did not ask what original and innovative games I had been playing. Otherwise I would of pointed you in the direction of Electroplankton, Contact, Kirby Power Paintbrush, Killer7,Soundvoyager and Orbital. Of course Nintendo is fixated on profits and sales, every company is, that is a sad fact of capitalism that all productive output of humanity is commodified. However there are still developers that work within these limits to push the medium as an art form, or to explore new gameplay methods and technolgies. My faith lies with the indie developers.
Not that this is a bad (albeit incredibly sarcastic) review, but why do Halophobes think that only negative reviews are honest ones?D0013ER
Because you have to compare issues, but websites like this give games like halo, bioshock, gears of war, and some others like graw shining reviews. Saying what is good about a game is okay, that doesn't say much, it just works. When a reviewer smashes a game for blatant issues that every other fanboy ignored, that makes it more reliable. But I think the review at Escapist wasn't critical enough; Auto-Aim with snipers, very half arsed melee attacks that have a 2.5 metre hit radius (probably introduced in the second halo for the console born people), and a sword that does all the work for you (again), this is a console shooter truly.
The only violent games I enjoy any more tend to be games like the warriors, manhunt and GTA, because they are at least original violent games. Lemmings seem to believe that a game has to have multiplayer to be excellent. The truth is, a game has to have great amounts of varying and ever interesting gameplay, and if you have that, you don't even need multiplayer to achieve a good score. When are we ever going to see a game like the warriors, or SOTC on the 360? Shooters, fighters, and racers, and none have carved and changed the way we play games, and none vary enough to show that we made progress from last generation.
When I read and watched reviews for games that got "goty" and all that, I would then believe that hype and see what the game was like. It was usually as good as the review said...... for about a half hour (usually the same as the games learning curve on gamespot). I believed I was simply maturing out of games, but it turns out games were just not getting any more original.
All I am going to do is blame western taste.

Seriously, most people bought it for multiplayer. It's an incredibly stupid review.da dude...didnt even do any multiplayer....lame review

Not really...
Its not like this claim is unjustified.... But perhaps if I had put that into the lines of
"Afraid I am going to have to put this one down to the western culture" Would that be better? It is a fact that different cultures have different tastes, and that is western taste. Titles with guns sell more than titles without guns in them.... Put these titles on sale in japan, and they wont outsell most JRPGs or Anime games.
Its a trend that needs to be ballanced with some original games every now and then no matter how many big words you throw around.

I don't think Halo 3's acclaim can be brushed off simply on account of culture clash. Otherwise you could say the same about any successful game: "Oh them (insert group here) and their (insert cultural fascination here)!". And "original" is impossibly vague in describing what you're looking for in a game. Original compared to what, exactly?
