As someone from Europe I am not really surprised. Most game stores where I am from, Xbox Series S are usually always in stock and on shelves, Xbox Series X are usually in stock and on shelves for a few days until the next re-stock. PS5s are never on the shelves and most stores are still trying to satisfy pre-orders from 6 to 9 months ago. In my country PS was always the go to consoles for most gamers, but lack of availability is pushing people to purchase Xbox due the the stock available while waiting for their pre-order to be fulfilled.

I'm pretty sure the trend is similar in other European countries.

How is the PS5 not available but has sold 17 million? If something is not available or in stock, wouldn't that mean the console is at 0 sold?

Makes perfect sense, the PS5 has not been in stock in the US most of February, next to no drops last month. While as Xbox Series S has been (XSX stock was also lacking, but not to same extent as PS5 from what I recall)

That's Forbes. You need to supply facts from the Microsoft Store.

Not available on store shelves. In my country pre-orders are still being fulfilled from 6-9 months ago, so units are moving just not on store shelves.

They have been seen on some store shelves though, as has the Series X. Pictures have been posted. Very infrequently though.

Did Microsoft foresee the chip shortage or did they just get lucky?

Anyway- apparently sales don't matter until PS5s are available on store shelves xD

I think they got lucky with the Series S. Apparently, it's easier to manufacture. The Series X is just as scarce as the PS5 atm.

And no, sales still matter. Every month that PS5 is MIA is lost revenue for Sony.

Probably in hardware sales but not so much in software since two of their recently released games are on PS4. All third party games are on PS4.

Probably. But I'm sure they'd much rather there be more PS5s out there so they can charge $70 to more people.

I don't blame them really. At least they can try out gamepass without sinking too much money into it. There is value to the Series S if all you want is a box to play games on.

@templecow90999: Although sales still matter (especially at corporate level) from an SW perspective or even monthly sales perspective, it's a little disingenuous to say X sold more than Y when availability is next to non-existant.

Plus with the Series S, those console are (relatively) abundantly available, as they are far easier to manufacture (better yields on those chips since weaker chip if I understand correctly).

I think the sales comparison (by month and year) will become more relevant (again from an SW perspective) once the supply chain issue have been fixed and both consoles are freely available online and on store shelves. Frankly though, do not see that happening until next year.

Got lucky with the PS5 as I had a pre-order and got it on the first batch on the first day. Series X I walked into a shop and got it off the shelf a few months later.

Looking forward to the day when people can walk in to a shop and find availability as it is ridiculous at this point

From what people have been saying. Because it has less memory, less GPU, that would mean that you might be restricted to AI or open world demands. I get that the GPU really isn't a concern because you can port down graphics. And the CPU is solid. But less memory and less powerful GPU combined makes me think they can't do as much with it. And recently that Dying Light 2 guy stating that the Series S GPU is holding the console.

I think the push and pull has begun. A lot sooner than I predicted. But the Series consoles are a good product with a lot of potential.

While I DON'T think Xbox will win the gen. I certainly don't think PS5 will have a runaway win like they did with the PS4 though.

I think this will be a bit more of a push and pull gen like Xbox 360/PS3. I think PS5 will win 55/45 or 60/40.

I think that PS4 brand power will start to wane and next gen things might be more even.

My controversial opinion is that IF Sony continue to fail to adapt with variety in games and being more competitive with services, I think Sony MAY start to lose gen after next if Xbox keeps making positive moves like they have.

The reason I feel this way, is because Sony seems happy to ride that PS4 brand power. They're not being pro-active and very competitive. Even making some arrogant moves lately.

I mean $70 1st party games when Xbox is putting theirs on Gamepass DAY ONE. And even that always online GT7, that's pure arrogance. That's almost as stupid as what MS did with the Xbox One. That's the arrogant territory that Sony seems to be in right now. This isn't adaptive and it's not competitive. They're taking advantage of their base which is one thing, that's business, but allowing the competition grow like this, isn't good business.

By the time PS5 is in regular stock, the PS4 brand power will have waned and Xbox would be in a competitive position.

this has been the situation the last 1.5 years so whats the difference between now and every other month?? Xbox starts outselling ps5 and now all of a sudden its a stock situation?

That makes no sense. Less memory affects textures and other assets not AI or open world demands (whatever that is). Dying Light 2 directly invalidates your point because the Series S is not holding back the performance on the Series X or PS5.

Before MS bought out activision, I felt sony had a solid chance if they made their own competitor to gamepass. But at this point, its not going to be easy for sony. After the deal with activision closes, MS will keep buying more and more studios

Given FoxxConn (sp?) Is closing shops amid a Covid outbreak I would imagine both MS and Sony might see production hitches.

How?

I don’t get it either. If anything, the chip shortage is holding back Xbox games… The Series S is fine for next gen only games to this point. The resolution or framerate may be lower, but the games are still the games. But why would devs pour tons of time and resources into visuals and stuff when the size of the player base is so negatively impacted by the chip shortage? Developing for last gen hardware has been a blessing for these devs. Imagine if “we believe in generations” was actually put into action. PlayStation would be screwed for years… And Xbox getting incredibly lucky with the current world events and the easier to produce Series S has pushed them into the lead in the hardware race vs PlayStation.

The Series S has been nothing but a positive for gamers and Xbox.

I remember reading other items like:

1. The principal engine programmer at id Software has shared what may be the keenest developer frustration about Xbox Series S' specs yet. Speaking on his personal Twitter account, id's Axel Gneitling (one of the folks most directly responsible for making Doom Eternal look good and run smoothly on a technical level) explains how the one system could hold back the possibilities of next-gen games that are built for multiple platforms.

Gneitling pointed to the "almost non-existent" RAM increase from current-gen systems to Xbox Series S as a major pain point.

2. Technical producer Sasan Sepehr of Control developer Remedy suggested that the Xbox Series S could lead to "trouble" due to "game optimization" issues. In other words, getting games to run on both the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X will create more work developers, and could lead to some headaches.

3. Similarly, multiplayer designer David Mickner of Call of Duty's Infinity Ward said that, while the Xbox Series S is an incredible value, "[Microsoft is] releasing a lower spec console that will serve as a bottleneck".

But if I am wrong because they are wrong, than that is cool! I was beginning to worry as I read more stuff from people saying it would hold back the Series X and next gen games.

Thank you for clarifying!

@dabear: xbox has been outselling the ps5 in the US. Now Europe. We can say it's the start of a trend.

Trend requires a behavior to happen over time. A one time event, is not a trend.

if they went 3rd party, they would be sunk. Who would want to play sony movie games? Uncharted is good, spiderman would sell, but everything else is meh.

And Sony will release GOTY level exclusives again and again. While it seems like every MS game is a nightmare to develop, and all the senior devs are leaving (Perfect Dark being the last to suffer)
