Sure I can, because I have a 1080p TV & both systems. It makes me more qualified to compare them the most of the fanboys on here that have neither a 1080p TV or both systems to do a true comparison. And the fact that people like you want to argue about how much better native 1080p looks vs. upscaled 1080p simply proves my point. Play both systems on a 1080p TV before trying to talk to me about how one looks so much better than the other.

ColoradoKindBud

Yeah, I get that you have both and a 1080p tv. I don't care, and it doesn't matter. The only way you can compare native 1080p to upscaled 1080p is to view two identical games/movies, one in native the other upscaled. You can't take two games look at them and them say "Yeah native and upscaled looks the same" because the graphics you're viewing are not consistant with each other. Example. Look at Lost Planet, it's upscaled to 1080p. Now look at the Tekken Dark Ressurection port for the PS3, it' in native 1080p. Tekken looks worse because the graphics just aren't there.

The only thing I'm trying to get across is that native 1080p is completely different than upscaled 1080p. That's it. Most people don't understand that

[QUOTE="ColoradoKindBud"]Yep, Forza looks cool.  I must admit I'm more looking forward to Motorstorm right now but I'll still pick up Forza2 for sure.urdoomed11
moterstorm = ps3 only good game

i think motorstorm is going to be the ps3's full auto.  the cows better swich to gt5 or some game that has a chance of delivering.

[QUOTE="purplemidgets"][QUOTE="ColoradoKindBud"]Guess what? I have a 1080p TV, (51in LCD HDTV), a PS3 & a 360 & games running in "true" 1080p on the PS3 through HDMI look no better than 360 games running at "upscaled" 1080p through component. FACT.ColoradoKindBud

And that has little to nothing to do with whether it's upscaled or native. Games have varied graphics, you can't use them to compare the two.

I have both systems and a 52" Sony Bravia capable of 1080p. I agree completely with Colorado's post. Experience is what counts here, not hype

What were you comparing Gears vs Mobil suit Gundam If a game looks better, its probably not cause of the resolution. Its just cause the game naturally looks better.

Like I said, get back to me when you get a 1080p TV, a 360 & a PS3 & can see for yourself that there are no graphical differences between PS3 running games natively in 1080p & the 360 running them upscaled in 1080p.  Until then, you're just like the rest of the people who think they know something about it, but really don't.

So... the 360 has to do double the work to take a 1080i signal and turn it into 1080p? Am I the only one that thinks that's an utterly retarded idea?

purplemidgets
The 360 doesn't have to do double work to go from 1080i to 1080p. It simply has to refresh an image quicker. There's basically no CPU difference between 1080i and 1080p. Now the difference between 720p and 1080p. . .that's a different story.

[QUOTE="DMWhiteDragon"]

1080p = 1920x1080 resolution, 1920x1080 per frame

1080i = 1920x1080 resolution, 1920x540 per frame (alternating, alot less bandwidth was designed for HDTV broadcasting at high res with lower bandwidth needs)

Now... can you make graphical resources that are interlaced? ... no, making two bitmaps with "blank" alternating lines actually takes more RAM/Storage than a single bitmap for example so noone will ever bother doing that lol. Also GPU's dont render interlaced images, you can't calculate AA correctly when you are missing every second line can you as another example. This means when a GPU renders a 1080i image is *has* to render a 1080p image and then the output is interlaced, this is the only way it *can* be done

You know what means? That means making a game 1080i native is just as stressfull on the GPU as a 1080p native application. (and its why we dont even get 1080i native high end games much less 1080p high end ones)

In fact if you show a still image at 1080i and 1080p... it would be completely impossible to tell the difference... impossible ;)

The 360 can do native 1080p rendering also as pointed out in the link article itself and by microsoft and by game developers (check annoucements of 1080p native games) and by the update that allowed it.... what else do you need to believe it folks? :)

Adrian_Cloud

This says maybe not. IGN: Will games begin to be developed with 1080p as the native resolution, or is the 360's new 1080p support an advance in the console's internal scaling abilities? GN: Will games begin to be developed with 1080p as the native resolution, or is the 360's new 1080p support an advance in the console's internal scaling abilities? Microsoft: If developed, the Xbox 360 will support playback of native 1080p games and all existing Xbox 360 titles can be up-scaled to 1080p. The signal will only come in as 1080i and be de-interlaced back to 1080p. How is the 360's new 1080p support, in practical application, going to be any different than what was already possible? Microsoft: We can offer 1080p support through both the VGA connection and the Component connection. _____________ I assure MS, doesn't know what there doing with 1080p? They say its native, but admits it comes through as 1080i and then is de-interlaced to 1080p? This part sums 360's 1080p. ____________ Microsoft's current response doesn't yet explain how the company can rectify its claimed support of 1080p with the fact that the 360 doesn't support the connection (HDMI) that will actually allow most 1080p HDTVs to display the signal. While the VGA solution may work for a minority of 1080p HDTV owners, we're left wondering if Microsoft is promoting this new 1080p capability primarily to blunt the onslaught of the PlayStation 3, which supports HDMI and 1080p.

lol, man are YOU out of date...

there is the UPDATED article where you got that from... and as you can see, they didn't quite have it right ;) have a read and get back to me

My 42 inch Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD doesent have a VGA input but Component, HDMI and RCA inputs. The TV however accepts 1080p through component cables (pretty sure most 1080p tv's do).

And GT 5 will destroy Forza 2 in the graphics department when it sports NATIVE 1080p graphics.

It doesn't matter to me because my LCD does 1080i. However, I look at it as yet another ownage point to the PS3. A $200 less system is able to touch the "holy grail of HD" that Sony liked to tote as being only reachable by them.

Not really.

x360 gamers just like to point out that the x360 can do 1080p and, thus, squash Sony's claim. ;)

Oh and before you re pasted that rediculous line out of context again

"The signal will only come in as 1080i and be de-interlaced back to 1080p"

how about you paste the WHOLE thing

"There are very few 1080p native HDTVs that accept 1080p via Component connections. The signal will only come in as 1080i and be de-interlaced back to 1080p. "

What that means is... while the 360 does FULL NATIVE 1080p support over VGA and Component...it doesn't yet do it over HDMI which most 1080p TV's only accept a 1080p signal from, which MEANS... 1080i will only be accepted from the componenet on these TV's and it will be upsclaed to 1080p

Thought id clear that up for you, you seemed a bit confused :)

You are right on the money there... 720p is the best mix of high rez and good frame rates. !080p is something for future gen consoles. I am buying a 1080p tv to be future proof, but I plan to run games in 720p. HDDVD on the other hand is 1080p since there are not frame rate issues.

360 does have 1080p in games. Maybe it is "scaled" but since the fall update, every game I play is diplayed, according to the menu on my tv, in 1080p.

EVery game since the Fall update, downloaded sotware has very little to do with a game being in 1080p resolution. The only problem is what MS said, the update did. By what they said, actual gameplay cannot be in 1080p. I thought it could, but Lost Planet is definately not 1080p.

Both Virtua Tennis 3 and NBA Street Homecourt will be rendered in native 1080p.

Both thos games aren't out, and haven't been shown to be 1080p on anything other than PS3. Anyhow. Yes they have. Sega confirmed 1080p support on the Xbox 360 here, and NBA Street was confirmed here, thus destrying the whole, "Xbox 360 can't display a native 1080p signal" argument.

So, you can't read. Good to know. They mention they can display native 1080p through both VGA and Component... and that non-1080p content can be displayed in 1080p through 1080i rendering and interleacing.

Which leaves you with a great HD solution... the HDMI thing, however, does suck. I'd love to connect my 360 through HDMI to my Mitsubishi WD-57731

Onslaught of the PS3? PS3 has 1 good game out and has 1/10th the sales of the 360, try redefining onslaught in your vocab. Im tired of seeing cows jumping at every 360 inperfection, when they know that just about everything the PS3 has done has been broken promises and lack luster games/sales/features in comparison.

QFT. I want it to be optimised for 720p, not 1080p. Only the rich ppl or hardcore sony fanboys have 1080p HDTVs.

Uh... yes it does. Just because developers generally target a lower resolution (JUST LIKE THE PS3) doesn't mean the hardware isn't capable of it. Everything in Computer Science has tradeoffs. Higher Resolutions come at a lower frame rate for a given model complexity. Higher resolutions come with a lower model complexity for a given frame rate. This is true for the PS3 as well. If you have a simple enough game, graphically, the 360 can easily put out 1080p native. And the complexity floor for the 360 and PS3 for supporting 1080p natively isn't that far apart. Honestly, I can't even tell you which one can support a more complex 1080p game, but my gut feeling says that crossplatform, the 360 version would be more complex, but a native-to-native, the PS3 would edge out.

Yep. The word "Upscaled" is key. The image quality will be no better than the resolution it's upscaled from..and not even close to the image quality of 1080p, if upscaled from 720p. The only reason the 360 has a built-in scaler is for better compatability with older HDTVs, according to Microsoft.

Did you completely miss the Virtua Tennis 3 announcement for the 360? In which it was said to be native 1080p?

Xbox360 doesnt have the Capabilities of Producing NATIVE 1080p... But nice try ;)

At least it can upscale properly...which is more than you can say for some machines...

UPSCALED.

Yep. The word "Upscaled" is key. The image quality will be no better than the resolution it's upscaled from..and not even close to the image quality of 1080p, if upscaled from 720p. The only reason the 360 has a built-in scaler is for better compatability with older HDTVs, according to Microsoft.

Actually, an upscaled image will in fact look better than it's original resolution.

You can use the VGA cable to get 1080p. Plus, you can convert an analog signal to HDMI if you really need to.

My HDTV only goes to 1080i, so this news is unimportant to me.

I don't have an HDTV yet (since I moved). I am planning on getting a 26" RCA HDTV that goes upto 1080i. (for 700 bucks), so this news is unimportant to me too.......

Still 1080p.

upscale 1080p does not equal 1080 native... sorry...

that's like taking regular dvd movies and upscale to 1080...

better quality than standard but not equal to native 1080p

Yes it does. Go read the fall firmware update for the 360. It specifically says native 1080p. CRAP! Why does this discussion come up so often? Are cows afraid of the "mythological" 1080p mark of the 360?

Im not scared i just never knew.. my ignorence sorry. And is that This Fall update or the one that passed?

 Thats IGN, not me. take it easy man.

Again you are WRONG ma lad-o ;)... you are either trolling/lying or grossly misinformed... i made posts before about how wrong you were... you are ignoring them so i can only assume you are lying.

The 1080p signal is not interlaced then deinterlaced at all... you are VERY confused here... you need to re-read the article untill you actually understand whats going on

You have a very valid gripe about HDMI as i do myself... MS should add the cable as they in that very article say they can

Now lets get to examples:

1080p Native TV, supports 1080p via HDMI only
Result: Only option is to use 1080i over component and the TV will deinterlace the signal to support its 1080p native display

1080p Native TV, supports 1080p via HDMI and Component
Result: Perfect native 1080p signal from the 360

Now the games... if we are using tv 2... and the game is 1080p native.. not just 'supported'.. then we get a pure true hd 1080p native experiance... all using the 360

I mean the article itself that YOU are using as information tells us this ^^

read it... again... carefully

EDIT: damn malformed html errors... i hate these editors heh

Now the games... if we are using tv 2... and the game is 1080p native.. not just 'supported'.. then we get a pure true hd 1080p native experiance... all using the 360

I mean the article itslef that YOU are using as information tells us this ^^

read it... again... carefully

1080p televisions can accept 1080p through the VGA cable. And if your tv doesn't have a vga port, then all you have to do is convert the analog component/vga signal to HDMI. Bam, problem solved.
