I didn't think that Kevin McCullough's uninformed drivel would get any traction, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Ugh. I don't blame the host or anything. It's not her fault. They just don't know. So when someone like the other guest comes on and says, "This game is filled with sex and objectifies women," how are they supposed to know who's right and who's wrong? You'd think they'd know to trust someone who has played the game over someone who hasn't, but they have their own preconceived notions about what games are and who plays them, and they'd rather believe the message that confirms what they know over the message that doesn't.
The shameful part of all this are the people who are willing to resort to this fearmongering in order to create a controversy and gain recognition. As you can tell by the people on the panel, parents simply don't know anything about videogames, and when they hear that games are a danger, they trust the story that tells them that they know what's right, and that this new technology serves only to undermine them. But they're just trying to get a grip on something they are ignorant about. It's the people who should know better, who spread these false warnings, who are truly despicable.
You got to be ****ing kidding me
"This downgrades women"
Uhh what?
"The studies show male video gamers cant tell the difference between women in real life and women in video games"
"This game deserves a AO rating"
UHH? what the hell? You don't even see anything! Maybe a 0.5 second of a but and half of a boob....yeah AO rating right there. These people on these news shows are idiots in my opinion. If they actually took some time to sit down and play the damn game maybe they wouldn't be so ignorant.
You know if they actually played the game they probably wouldn't have had this discussion.
They would have gotten to the actual sex scene and been like:
"T-That's it? Are you kidding me?"
If the Hitman series had a game wth sex in it, it would be on the news and critizised constantly.
But the Hitman movie, which had a sex scene in it, was perfectly fine.

double standards? im guessing since video games are so known around the world.....that people will go to great lenghts just to somehow make video games look like an spawn of satan :?You know if they actually played the game they probably wouldn't have had this discussion.

its 12 in england, man america is so againbst children knowing or having anything to do with sex till there like 18, any 12 year old in england can just go and buy the game themselves, Same with NA's drinking lawsOn topic with this subject, That guy was 90% correct. I agree that the game was properly rated, M is clearly enough to cover a corner of a boob and a suggested sex scene. He was also smart in talking about the in-console rating system. Parents have all the control in the world over thier kid's 360. Much more so than the internet, or even DVD collection.
"Oh no, Daddy's got some R+ rated movies... no, don't worry about that, its ok if they see it, but if they play something thats not even close to that, UH OH!!!, social destruction on a psycological level!!! OMG!!!!"
give it a rest. Besides, if your a normal healthy teenage boy, you've probalby seen 10x more than that from friends, on the computer, or in movies. The video game part is such a small % of the stuff that affect people compared to other media.Parents are the ones at fault if anything.

Fox News run out of Republican propaganda, so they've turned to a good old Conservative favourite: demonising Video Games
Pathetic, I'm suprised Fox News is allowed to operate.
So... um... is this what the media's like in America? BEcause, seriously, I think my brain just melted. I thought journalists were supposed to want to find out the truth and report it, not silence the one guy who actually knew what he was talking about.SpigleyMcCheese
Indeed.
I think the only time the population-at-large is exposed to Fox News where I'm from is when someone is taking the **** out of American's, which is often :P
sexbox sexbox SEXBOX SEXBOX!!!
LMFAO, It's **** like this that I advocate more accountability on the part of news journalism. They can talk crap and get away with it, at best they might be forced to apologise and that's it.
that women saying its only men that play games like mass effect needs to pull her head out of he arse seriously, people like that lead such shelterd lives, being a girl my self i dont agree with wat any of the women had to say cos there factless and no jack and hide behind research like that other one did till she got pwned, i play all types of gory games in fact i got a copy of mass effect comming tomorrow :D, OH NOES a GIRL is gonna play mass effect i bet she wont like that :roll:hellrazor06
Did you play as a guy or girl, I'm thinkng girl and secondly did you choose the "straight" sex option or the "lesbian" option.... just for research purposes.
Can't remember his name, the guy tahat was pointing out facts about the game was completely ignored by the lady and shedidn't respect his opinion at all and he played the game and she didn't.
Lady who hates Mass Effect needs to get her research right because...she didn't have any research. "The scientist of...video game...sexual meanings said that...if you watch the sex...you'll probably see it through porn...rated R movies...or...umm...tv shows on HBO and Showtime! But it also shows that not a singel female has played Mass Effect, because you can make...your character...look more...curvy. Ok...honny?"
Then the guy said..."What research? A lot of girls have played the game, and the sex scene is only to minutes which isn't even that bad! It looks like the scene from "The Terminator", and it doesn't even look as bad as that."
Basically what they said.
It didn't surprise me that the psychologist got her facts wrong. Jeff Keighley did a good job of trying to point how how incorrect she was.
It's the panel discussion afterward that really surprised me. They went on about how "in this day and age" it's hard for a parent to hover over the child every second. And yet.... only a couple minutes earlier they read a statement from Microsoft that pointed out the rating on the box and the parental controls that the Xbox has. Selective listening?
This is the kind of thing that gets me mad. It's painfully apparent that they made up their minds well before they clipped the mics to their lapels. It's also painfully apparent that they failed to do what a good parent should: pay attention to the information right smack in front of them.
Of course their majesties couldn't be bothered to look into what the ratings mean or how to use the parental controls. They allowed the piece to center on the sensationalism of the topic and failed to really tie their fears into the facts.
Speaking as a parent, irresponsible "journalism" like that did parenting a great disservice.
I've played video games since I was 3 or 4... I can differentiate reality from fiction (such as the "studies" that University of MD conducted) better than that "psychologist".
What a maroon.
 comment that made me swear out loud, "I just dont see why this game isnt given an Adult Only rating..."
at that point i turned off the video utterly angry at how ignorant some people are.
I don't think they know that AO games don't actually get released. If they would inform themselves before they started prattling on about a subject.... they wouldn't be FOX news. comment that made me swear out loud, "I just dont see why this game isnt given an Adult Only rating..."

I wish even the smartest people in the world would know this, but video games, movies, tv show, that doesn't change people. People are born the way they are seen. Kind of like you are born a pycho path, you can't become one.DuDisNowThat's ridiculous.
Both nature and nurture have equal effect in my opinion.

Very dangerous and controversial statement to make.

It's cool to hate Fox News afterall they do get the best ratings...STUPID liberals...
I do not agree with them on this issue, but just cause they annoy you cause they don't fall in line perfectly with your political views like all the liberal media news channels doesn't mean you have to hate on them. I could pwn the HELL out of CBS,ABC, or BBC news for that matter about media bias against Republicans/Conservatives.
They report the most filtered news possible. It's cool to hate Fox News afterall they do get the best ratings...STUPID liberals...

its not the fact that they dont agree it the fact that they are so wrong in their ideas about mass effect.
The psychologist hadnt even played the games, she made up crap about how you could sleep with all these different women in the game, how it was like a porn film and how the female characters in the game are presented in only a sexual sense. I mean wtf!? she didnt even know you could play as a women.
The game guy on the other side corrected her on every issue, but Fox still seemed to side with the psychologist, the phychologist then told us about a study that apparantly says that those who play videogames cannot distinguish well enough between the virtual and the reality. Surely you must take offence to that.
The worst thing was that the panel of people who were then interviewed believed the psychologists story over the game critic. one woman questioned why couldnt mass effect be given an AO rating. Just based off this sex scene which is rated "12" in the UK. Another guy said that he wouldnt allow mass effect in his house now that he had heard this, and well... I didnt get any further I was too disgusted to watch any more.
That was sooo funny, in britain the game got a 12 rating American journalist are all comedians surely
In mass effect it takes You at least 5 hours downtime to see a blue girls ass, I could leave my house right now and in 20 minutes have has sex with a random girl.
This may reflect on how amazing i am/or more likely the fact that england has such a highrate of teen pregnancy and underage sex (although as im sixteen its no longer underage)
I could leave my house right now and in 20 minutes have has sex with a random girl.ukillwegrill

Gotta disagree there.
You CAN be born a pychopath, but you can also become a psycopath due to things you have seen such as war some soldiers who return from war are truamtized by what they have seen and done.
In the news the other day it tiold of how an ex-soldier killed his whole family.....for no reason.......and then handed himself in he was diagnosed to have become mentaly unstable due to the war
