Yeah it makes sense, just like how all the people that play consoles instead choose to just stick to flash games on PC or easy to run indie games, or anything else like that...oh wait they do BOTH!? Wow thats a crazy thought.
This notion is just stupid. YOu simply cannot obtain the same quality and length of game on an iphone or whatnot.
fox news call him an avid gamer, but he just stated he mostly games on his iphone....yeah nuff said
They know video games like I know math.FOX news... that is all.

And I almost didn't graduate thanks to my lack of knowledge in that subject.:D
I agree. Consoles are going to die out eventually as portable gaming machines (and streaming based services) take over.
You should read the entire article, not the part that was selectively included in the OP. The personal anecdote, while interesting, was not the main point.
While it's easy to say "lol, Fox News," cloud computing definitely has the potential to change console gaming as we know it. Though, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Perhaps, the three console makers will allow you to both stream your games and purchase them in the traditional manner.

Near? Define "near." Cloud-based aspects are catching on rather quickly, and the video game developers already don't like how mobile gaming has increased dramatically over the past few years. Mobile gaming is now a huge market, and as internet speeds increase and more people have access to High-Speed internet, are you honestly telling me that streaming video games--a la Onlive esque business--isn't the future? Digital Distribution and Streaming is the future. I am shocked that people would tell me physical based media will last for decades...The end is near for consoles?! According to who? Oh.. Fox News huh....Nothing to see here.

What's worng?? The wrong comes from the fact that is based on what a so called "avid gamer" says.
They could've asked me and if I said, "PC gaming is dead"... would you agree just because I make statementsabout why I think so??
The console business model is under threat. Casual gaming (on PC and mobiles), mobile gaming and downloads have the potential to wreck the business model the console makers use.
The gaming market is becoming increasingly crowded, and mobile phone hardware is generally upgraded much more frequently than that of the consoles. Mobile technology is catching up fast with a small number of good looking titles - that is only likely to grow as the hardware continues to improve.
Consoles are far from finished - but they're now operating in a marketplace for games that is very different to the one the 360 and PS3 entered into 5 years ago. If MS and Sony get it wrong, the next generation could be the last big cash cow for their consoles.
(As much as Fox News can spout a load of old rubbish, it's a fallacy to write them off solely because they're usually mad as a herd of cats)
If they can improve the average quality of game they are producing sure, but right now it resembles the reason the industry once crashed.I agree. Consoles are going to die out eventually as portable gaming machines (and streaming based services) take over.

It really would be nice if next gen adopted digital distribution... but they won't. Oh well, there's always Steam until the day comes.

The very next line says, "Ormond obviously doesn't speak for every gamer. Fanatics who play more than 10 hours a week -- sometimes as much as 5-6 hours per day -- are more than happy to regularly part with that kind of cash for admittedly deeper and longer-lasting gameplay."

A similar comparison is found in the music industry. Here's a thought - how many people still purchase (the majority) of their music on CD's? Or purchase them at all? (don't answer that)
Many people nowadays obtain their music via digital distribution (legally of course..). There are now even websites and applications that allow you to stream your own personalized radio.

Well considering that where I live services like Onlive are no where NEAR being a considerable option for reliable source of gaming. When the highest Download speed available is 1.5 mb/s down, you're not playing jack crap with Onlive. Sure cloud based services may be the future of gaming, but we've got a long way to go before that future becomes a reality. The end is near for consoles?! According to who? Oh.. The article is not about the present but the FUTURE. Considering how far technology has jumped within the past decade; we should be well ahead that the next generation of home consoles could potentially be the last.

Never said I did... all I'm saying it's that the article is wrong, no matter what their reasons are.
We know consoles aren't anywhere near their end.
But this brings me to my previous question, would you agree with me if I said "PC is dead"?
Won't happen. They may evolve to be more like a box that download games kind of like steam, but they won't end.

PC has Digital Distribution. Not dead. Physical media is dying for PC, and it will eventually for consoles. It's inevitable.
Hate the message, not the messenger. They have a good point. chapnzaba

I know the article was about the future. I was merely stating that the so called "future" being discussed might not be near as close as you seem to think.

Oh yeah, DD... you win man.
I forgot DD is NOT possible on consoles, right??
]DD, and Streaming is the future for video games. Why should I go out and buy a Blu-ray or DVD for X amount, when I can just lay in bed, never leave the house, and stream the movie via netflix? Over a decade ago, I would have thought that would be the silliest damn thing I had ever heard. Now? A decade from now... we'll be streaming our videogames, or mainly purchasing them via DD.Oh yeah, DD... you win man.

Ok, I'll say it straight DD IS possible on consoles, don't you ever forget that... mighty PC is not the only one capable of it. So it's stupid to say consoles are dead because DD will get bigger and bigger in the future.
Consoles ain't daying soon.
PERIOD.
