Apart from having exellent multiplayer, I wouldent call Halo 3 the console FPS 'king' at all.....
The singleplayer campaign is awesome. Some of the best difficulty settings I've seen in any FPS, and the Skulls just add onto the replay experience. Add-in 4 player online co-op, and theatre, the game is a beast.
Honestly I found the singleplayer very lackluster compared to games like Bioshock, COD4, The Orange Box and Crysis at the time.Skulls were a neat addition, however the 4 player coop felt like a mess, as the singleplayer clearly was not designed for more than two people running about... in that respect it was far less engaging with more people as it should have been (same with for instance HL2 coop mod - with 4 people it feels like a rabble, knowhere near as engaging as on your own).
It was not bad.. it just was not great either. I thought it was ok, a bit of a relic if anything, and plenty of design flaws that a game of such high calibre and hype should not have had. Sure it was better than Halo 2s.... but for its time, up against the games i had listed.... not so great.
The multiplayer however is sublime, and absolutely perfect for console gameplay. I really enjoyed it, and in all honest it felt as if multiplayer had become the core of the game.
Which is why id say since Halo 2 and now to 3, Halo has become a primarily multiplayer franchise. Never the less its the multiplayer that has gained the game so much widespread popularity - and of course its mp is great.
Honestly there is no 'console fps king'.
As there is no 'PC fps king'
There are just too many FPS games on either platform to simply say one is the 'best' overall.
