Bad news folks, Free Radical just went under. No more Timesplitters, no more Haze

Independent UK studio Free Radical Design closed its doors this morning, our sister site GamesIndustry.biz reports, with multiple sources claiming that staff, including senior executives, have already left the company.

That's heartbreaking, I was really looking forward to TS4. Now it's pointless, hand it over to someone who dosn't understand what TS is all about and that's even worse than losing it all together. That seriously sucks.

I know, but MS could do it. I would neevr understand them though. if they ever close down Lionhead studios or Rare I don't know what I do. It is like they don't want any first party developers. they just let talent go away or shut them down.

DAMMIT!!! Me and my mates were just talking the other day about how much a new Timesplitters would rock, and now it's over... I am seriously disappointed. TS:FP is one of my all-time favourite shooters, and I was really psyched for TS4.

Tho I can't say I'm surprised at this after Haze bombed like nobody's bussiness. :(

See, this is what they get for leaving Rare. :|

Now maybe they can crawl back to the company that made them famous and get to work on a proper sequel to Perfect Dark.

Yeah...I'm really bitter over the fact that much of Rare's best talent left the company to go form Free Radical in the first place. Because of that, instead of an awesome prequel to my favorite game of all time, we got Perfect Dark Zero. While I still stand by it to this day and say it's good, it doesn't have any of the charm, wit, or appeal that the N64 original had.

Yeah, but with FR we got Timesplitters, Timsplittters 2 and Timesplitters Future Perferct, three of the best FPS games ever made. Now we wont see a real sequel :(. I would rather have TS over an old throwback to the days of the N64. TS was just something else, a truely addictive multiplayer and great sense of humour that would keep you playing for days, even against bots.

I'm not denying that TImesplitters was a great franchise and one that will be missed but, well, you put it perfectly in your own post. It was a throwback to the N64 days. Timesplitters is arguably the advancement of what they were trying to accomplish with Perfect Dark and Goldeneye; what we would've gotten if the N64 had two analog sticks, perhaps. They could've made Timesplitters if they were still at Rare, heck, they probably could've put PD on the back burner for a while while they focused on TS. With Rare's full talent behind it, who knows? Timesplitters could've been even better than it was.

I doubt it, teams don't just seperate for no reason. I'm willing to bet TS was offered as a concept at one point, with alot of backing, but something must have gone wrong. Mabye some big shot turned it down. On any account, I doubt Free Radical would have been formed had it not been for some form of disagrement.

Perhaps, perhaps not. I guess we'll never know now.

I believe there was a disagreement between Rare bigwigs that lead to the formation of Free Radical but I'm not sure. Ah well.

They never should have made haze...

Why they did not just stick to timesplitters i dont know. Timesplitters 3 is still one of the best FPS games out there. Even fighting bots is incredibly fun...

Only if you've never played a decent FPS before. Timesplitters was an average FPS at best.In fact, Free Radical has never made a game that I liked after they left Rare. Second Sight was mediocre and you see how Haze turned out. As much as I hate to hear about people losing their jobs, Good riddance. They were a seriously overrated developer.

I played loads of FPS games on consoles that gen and for me TS3 won hands down, the single player had a a good, funny storyline with great characters, the controls were brilliant, the graohics were great at the time, the online multiplaayer was not bad for the ps2. And the game really shined in its offline multiplayer, 4 players, tons of modes, good AI, great maps and hilarious guns.

Bad news folks, Free Radical just went under. No more Timesplitters, no more Haze

Independent UK studio Free Radical Design closed its doors this morning, our sister site GamesIndustry.biz reports, with multiple sources claiming that staff, including senior executives, have already left the company.

I agree. Seriously, Timesplitters was really overrated, I played it when it came out, I preferred playing Quake 2 on PS1 instead. Second Sight was decent at best, nothing really special. I just hope they will re-unite with Rare.

Maybe it was not great compared to PC games fair enough, but on consoles it was a god send. It was easliy for me the best game for multiplayer I had, whenever I hadf friends round it was the first thing I put in the ps2 and afterwards if they did not already have the game, very unlikely, they wanted it. No other game mode ca complete with virus on TS3 :P

Its always sad when a dev shuts its doors but FR have been sucking ever since TS:3, even that wasn't THAT good. TS is pretty overrated IMO, its ok but nothing to shout about. Now Haze, that was a crime against FPS, I'm not surprised they went under making games of that standard.

[QUOTE="heretrix"]Only if you've never played a decent FPS before. Timesplitters was an average FPS at best.In fact, Free Radical has never made a game that I liked after they left Rare. Second Sight was mediocre and you see how Haze turned out. As much as I hate to hear about people losing their jobs, Good riddance. They were a seriously overrated developer.Salt_The_Fries
I agree. Seriously, Timesplitters was really overrated, I played it when it came out, I preferred playing Quake 2 on PS1 instead. Second Sight was decent at best, nothing really special. I just hope they will re-unite with Rare.

I guess my main problem with the Timesplitters series was that I was heavily into PC gaming at the time and playing much better FPSs. The games always seemed really lame to me. Compared to games like Unreal Tournament and the Quake series and Half-life, etc..The Timesplitter games were a joke...and unlike how it is today, the gap in quality was much larger between the PC and consoles...

No more Haze, lol, did you need to mention that?EuroMafia

TS series > Most FPS games

Only if you've never played a decent FPS before. Timesplitters was an average FPS at best.In fact, Free Radical has never made a game that I liked after they left Rare. Second Sight was mediocre and you see how Haze turned out. As much as I hate to hear about people losing their jobs, Good riddance. They were a seriously overrated developer.

And yet most FPSs rely on multiplayer over single player these days where as the Timesplitters series had numerous single player modes and bots to keep the lonely gamer happy, great multiplayer and TS3 had a map maker. How often do FPSs have numerous single player modes and bots these days? There's a reason why this series is underrated while Halo gets all the attention, even though the campaigns in Halo 2 and 3 weren't even as good as the 1st one, but that's just my opinion.

[QUOTE="heretrix"][QUOTE="NinjaMunkey01"] I played loads of FPS games on consoles that gen NinjaMunkey01

There's your problem right there.

Understood. I'm trying to be as fair as I can with my criticisms..I am in full disclosure in saying my point of view is completely colored by my exposure to PCs back in the day...Even Goldeneye was just ok to me..Although Perfect dark holds a special place in my heart.
