All the game developers stood fascinated by SteamOS and Steambox.

Markus Persson         @notch

Valve is saving the entire gaming world, but I all I can do is mumble passive aggressively about crowbars.

Cliff Bleszinski         @therealcliffyb

In other news Valve continues to do whatever the hell they want. Awesome.

How exactly is it death of consoles, when Steambox is practicly a console itself? Even PC game devs are getting so desperate that they are starting to make consoles to join the console market.

Probably, but do you realize how many people buy pre-built computers every year from places like Walmart or Best Buy?

Valve wants to put a certified gaming/media PC right next to those PCs, and hope that the same type of consumer finds interest in it.

It's not as if Valve is only targetting the hardcore PC enthusiast crowd.

Okay i get that. So why does the steambox excite the hardcore PC gamers on this forum? They can build a faster and cheaper tower no problems.

The steambox isn't a console though. It's a prebuilt PC that's designed for use in the living room for someone who doesn't want to build their own rig or any other reason. Can you upgrade all the hardware parts of a console? Can you legally change the OS to whatever you want? Are they open platforms? If any of those answers are "No", then this is not a console.

Well, I don't know if I'd say it excites them on a hardware standpoint. It's just something new getting buzz, but I've seen many of them who share the same thoughts you do.

But even then I don't think every PC gamer here fits into the "hardcore PC enthusiast" group.

Evo_nine

Perhaps, but they may have lower end machines in the $250 to $500 range available that are better suited to gaming than a comparably priced PC.  No Windows licensing fee is a big piece of savings.

I guess the big correlation with Valve announcing Steam Machines and of course SteamOS on Monday has something to do with AMD announcing Mantle. I have a feeling we'll be seeing some damn good performance out of AMD's upcoming Kaveri APUs with Mantle, making them the likely "minimum spec" for a proper Steam Machine. It would be nice to see Valve leverage GPGPU capabilities in Kaveri if that's the case.

Luckily, in the same manner as Android, SteamOS is open.  It will on any reasonably modern x86 hardware.  There will likely be a target hardware spec that Valve feels most SteamOS games are built to without being expensive.  I'm making the guess again that Kaveri will be the target recommended initial spec since it's slated for great performance at a very low initial cost to custom builders and OEMS.

Unless they are priced like a Wal-Mart PC, I don't really see that working. Not sure how they could price it as low as a cheap PC or console and still be able to maintain Steam pricing. Not sure if you could sell this thing as a loss lead and still be able to bank off of selling $5.00 games.

Honestly, if they keep the prices respectable I'm getting one. Last time I owned what would pass for a gaming rig was 2008, been postponing building another for 5 years, mainly due to lack of interest. Due some minor casual gaming on my Laptop, CoD/United Offensive, HL2, Diablo2, WoW(when I played it), etc... This would give me a reason to get back into PC gaming more regularly. I see there are different models to be available, any word on whether or not said models would be upgradeable?

If done right, it could definitely bring new competition. One platform that can play my same game library on both PC and a console in the living room? Yes please. They just have to be competitive with hardware pricing, which is the biggest obstacle. I'm sure they're already working with developers for games in addition to hardware. Console makers are stuck with years old technology and ways of doing things. Someone has to push the industry forward.
