Why is it, the xbox game updates take seconds, where as PS3 updates can take hours!?

I get limited time to game so I find this pretty annoying.

Socom had about 600mb of updates

MAG had 700mb updates

I stuck uncharted 2 in the other day to find 7 updates were neeeded. The first one was 140mb, so I turned it off again.

For me, this totally goes against the benefits of console gaming.

Their set up is flawed. Downloading a demo takes much more time than xlive and then you got to wait a few more minutes for an install. Maybe it's set up that way to counter piracy or something but it is annoying.

Maby you should upgrade from 56k. J/k Could be traffic, your location, server location. Ive only had a problem once with ps3 game uptades. Took half hour to dowload a ~30mb patch for LBP. No problems after that, the updates come as fast as my broadband can handle.

I agree. This is truly the worse thing about the PS3. I find it more effective if when the updating bar ever stops, to just restart the process. Often times it stops at 4%. I just exit out and restart it. It makes the process faster.

The updates take long because of the way the PS3 handles patches. It is an issue Sony needs to fix, but there's no need to exaggerate. They don't take hours to complete. At the very least, they should allow background downloading and installing of patches like Steam.

Slashkice
You can background download. But most of the time I'm not too fussed as they don't take ample amounts of time to download patches.

My updates only take 10-20 minutes. And I don't mind the updates on U2 because they frequently fix any of the game's necessary glitches, and the updates don't come 7 TIMES because I frequently go online, so I get them one by one. The 7 updates happen either because you have not gone online for quite some time OR you just bought the PS3. Just saying.

If the updates are 700mb big that could only mean there adding more content. Which is a GOOD thing.

It is quite annoying because I can't do anything else but if you have a second console you can use it meanwhile the PS3 is downloading. That's what I do when there is a long update.

10-20 minutes, takes about 10-20 seconds on the 360, and you can have background downloading and patching, if you pay for it, it's one of the features listed for PSN's premium service, the bigger problem though, is that these games need patching in the first place,. this release a game broken, patch it later on mentality really has to end.

Let's not compare it with Live, I agree on how efficient the service is, miles better than PSN, and way faster downloads too. My post is not meant to compare, I'm just saying that the TC is exaggerating on the 7 hours thing.

he may not be exaggerating, in the UK we have a lot of towns and villages in what we call broadband dead zones, there was a news story about it on anglia news, one guy had 2 meg broadband and it took him 2 hours to load a web page, but if he's having that problem with the Ps3, it would be the same for live as well

The socom update is with all the new guns, whole lot of fixes, it just changes the gameplay completely thats why. Same thing with MAG new maps, guns and all the other stuff.

Hours? Not even close

One Single Hour? Still not even close.

You should upgrade your internet, but if you live in a slower broadband area, them's the breaks.
I will say that I am sick of updates for any console and even PC though, it's annoying.

TC, it also sounds like you haven't turned your PS3 in awhile to get all those updates at once is going to be slower.

The only issue I ever had was the MAG Beta, but that was literally gigs and gigs of information.

Sometime i had to wait for like 30 - 45mins to make a download/install it.... with 360 its always seconds or a minute max... thats why i said updates are a nightmare on PS3..

Sometimes its frustrating having like 1 hour to game before maybe going out, pick a game and there's an update which you know it might take 15 mins or maybe more, so I just end up playing another game instead and update the other one when i have more time..

Yeah I don't find much of a difference doing it in any place. I went to play LBP again since I had to get a new PS3, had about 500 meg or so total in updates and it took about 20 minutes cause they were all separate. I usually download demos and stuff at 1-1.5m/s. Thinking of updating my internets though, my ISP now offers a 30mbit service for $5 more than my 14mbit.

Yeah so I hear!

It was pure funny, my friend was over playing COD4 at my house on 360. Start up game, and it pops up "An update is required". He goes "****" and puts down his controller.

I went "What's wrong?"

"O we won't be playing for 10 or 15 minutes. Bloody updates!"

Me: "Lol wut? *click update ...10 secs of loading... DONE!*

Him "Wtf!?"

Me "Yeah...haha"

If you don't update for long you will have more updates to load, this is why UC2 had 7 updates :p

LBP updates contains all DLC that comeing up, due the fact that you play with people with paid costiums and fact that play on level made by those who use DLC

Well issue is more fact that Sony is not software company, not eventually because you don't paid for it

Patches take unbelievably long to download but demos are fine. Ive verified that demos download at the max my ISP allows. I have not verified anything for patches but they do take a long time. Every new game I get requires a 5 minute update after a 5 minute install.

My buddy lives up north in a rural area and he has the best broadband he can buy , pays more than me, and it's super slow. He hates updating his PC, everything.

$5 more for 30mbit, that seems well worth it.

Also SOCOM is a bad example because they basically made the game playable through updates. I think from launch it has been around 2 gigs worth.

And to tc 700mb is a pretty big patch i highly doubt you could download that in under a min unless you had an optimal connection and setup straight to the servers :S.

Agreed. Although nothing ever took me an hour, that wasn't a demo or MAG.

Updates on the PS3 were beyond terrible, and it seemed to do them one after the other if you;ve missed a couple updates, as opposed to the xbox which seems to do the one cumilative update which literally takes around 20 seconds.

Game demos are a horror too, they often take longer to download, and on top of that install.

I guess this is where MS shows why it's a software company(God knows it's not with the games)

I've really never had any of these problems. Sure the games need updates, but they do not take hours. And downloading demos takes like 5 mins. 10 mins at max of the demo is huge. And the install takes and even shorter time.

The only game this gen that I own and has had a massive patch is Socom, I don't believe if Socom was on Live you'd download 600megs in seconds, this thread is pointless. Yes Live updating is more seamless and quicker, but don't compare 10meg patches with 600meg ones. Or at least find a multiplat and compare that.

Id say my average update time on the PS3 was about 5-10 minutes. Compared to my 5-10 seconds on my Xbox.

Since I only used my PS3 for exclusives it's hard for me to compare them directly, however when i did lend a copy of Oblivion from a friend, it took about 20 minutes to download like 4 updates. The Xbox would have done that in 30 seconds.

because Sony doesn't have good servers throughout the countries they serve.
Microsoft has loads of servers all over which makes things much much faster.

yeah it sucks, but on a plus side it downloads demos in the background when playing single player games. i always found that a neat feature, whereas the xbox just stops the download (if it's a disk game). both should learn from each other.

because Sony doesn't have good servers throughout the countries they serve.
Microsoft has loads of servers all over which makes things much much faster.

i presume it must also be something to do with the size of the patches, because sony games tend to be 5-700 mb in size, if you try to download something on your computer that size at even the fastest speed, it would still take 2 minutes+. but servers would defintely contribute.

it is a pain. Even after the update is downloaded, it takes 15-25 minutes to apply. Why would an OS that uses about 60megs of footprint take this long to patch????? GRRRR

This has always been a problem with the ps3 and how they impliment patches or game updates. You should under ANY circumstances have a patch that is 500+ mb that is just insanity. The bad part about updates on the ps3 is that you can not DOWNLOAD IN THE BACKGROUND hopefully they get it together with the next system cause this update crap is the reason why i wont touch socom again, that one update alone TOOK AN HOUR and the install took bout 5-10 min.

PS: if the rumor is true that you have to pay for premium to get background dl of updates that is LEGENDARY FAIL on sonys part that is something that should be included in the systems dna regardless.
