a surround sound system is ALOT more important than a hdtv. surround sound allows you to hear what direction certain sounds are coming from, giving you a whole new element to gameplay. hdtvs make it look better, but that pretty much it. its only slightly improving the quality of the image, that you have hd or sd.kkevguy47kIf you have a true home theater setup, the image quality difference is so vast that you will never think to use your SDTV for gaming again. It is like going to the eye doctor and getting a pair of glasses that give you perfect vision, after having spent most of your life legally blind. If you're going to Walmart for an HDTV, you're going to leave less-than-impressed, if you're setting up a proper theater in your home, to claim it's anything less than a life-changing purchase is to be in a state of jealous denial.
I wouldn't get an HDTV. There might be a difference, but I honestly do not care enough about graphics for it to be worth my while. Current gen graphics on my relatively small CRT SDTV are absolutely fine for everything except Dead Rising (bastards), as far as I'm concerned.

not really i mean yes there is a change but its not like your gonna go from sd gaming to hd gaming and be all sploogy in your pants its an upgrade an expensive upgrade.
The great thing about HDtv's is the fact that you can tv out your pc to it as well.. I actually do that to play Crysis.. Which makes it 720p which lightens the load of the game while I can crank up the graphics even more.not really i mean yes there is a change but its not like your gonna go from sd gaming to hd gaming and be all sploogy in your pants its an upgrade an expensive upgrade.

I remember seeing icons in Oblivion on a SDTV and not being able to figure out what it was...... then I got an HDTV and I immediately could tell what it was.
Such a big difference.... I could never go back to SDTV..... which is why it's so hard to play my Wii now.....
If you care enough to look for a difference.OreoMilkshakeThis is just crazy; the difference is huge, I find it hard to believe you have ever seen a game in HD, Not only do games look a ton better everything does. Movies in HD, especially 1080p, are vastly superior as well. The jump from VHS to DVD is not as profound as the jump from DVD to blue-ray. Even last generation I found it hard to play consoles sometimes because of 480p, much less 480i. I basically stuck to the PC.
I normally don't want to call people out like this but it's the only explanation. Nobody can look at the two and not see it. It's not just a sharper image it's also the color. Color's look so much better. SDTV looks washed out; that's the polite way of saying it.There's a big difference and anyone who says otherwise is just trying to convince themselves they're not missing out.

If you care enough to look for a difference.OreoMilkshakeThat's a lie. the difference is HUGE, it's not even funny. Especially if you're using HDMI.
I can actually see stuff properly now. Like on my SDTV the safehouse icon in GTA4 looked like a key. Now I can see that it actually is a house!. It would be really hard to go back after getting an HDTV
To some a $500 to $800 purchase is just a huge as the difference between SDTV & HDTV.Why all the animosity to HDTV? How long are you guys going to hold on to your crappy standard tube tv's? Its not that expensive to upgrade to a decent hdtv these days. $500 to $800 can get you a decent set. Get with the times.

Just do some research but IMO you don't need to go with a big name brand. My 32" LCD is a Sony (720p, but you can go beyond that when it's hooked up to a PC) and my 40" 1080p is a Toshiba. I have that hooked up in my game room now and my PC, 360, and ps3 are hooked up to it. It has 4 HDMI ports which is a bonus. I grabbed it for 700 bucks and I just love it.hd tv of 42" samsung or sonys bravia.what brand is the best in hd tvs?

They make things looks a great deal better, but they don't change the enjoyment of a game from a SD to a HDTVArisShadowsFor me they did. I couldn't stand to play any 360 games on my old SDTV because I could hardly see what was going on. Admittedly, it was a fairly small TV, but I've played on larger ones and it was just as bad.
I play soley on SDTV and it looks good. But some games aren't compatible withthe TV resolution so they don't appear full screen, and there are the black borders. Few games have unredeable text. But in GTA4 i can easily recognise everything.
But played on an HDTV, and i must say i was impressed.
Given the choice, would you choose a standard SD TV + Surround Sound over a HDTV? I know I wouldn't.To be honest, surround sound changes games much more than switching to HD.
You want to really be immersed in your game? Get some nice surround sound. It REALLY helps with shooting games too, made fighting Radec much easier.

Immense difference. I have an HD TV at home, and a SD CRT at my college place, so Im in the unfortunate position of being spoilt for half the year, and having to return to crap each term.
Some of my PS3 games could be mistaken for Wii games on my SD TV. Not that thats a problem - Ive always maintained that some of the Wii's games look like early XBOX / PS3 games, but in SD.
I'm not really sure what you mean by "graphically." Ultimately the output image will be the same, it's just a matter of your TV's resolution and contrast ratio after that.

The thing is, all games I played were like Dead Rising. If a game had any sort of HUD, I could barely play it.
Also, if you have a Wii, it will likely look worse on an HDTV, although that's because the Wii doesn't output in HD.
1. It depends what your price range is... if you really want "the best", as in the best possible screen, you're going to be spending hundreds of thousands. 2. If your goal is "the best", 42" is going to be far too small. To meet THX recommendations for a typical 8-foot viewing distance (couch to wall) you're going to need a 72" screen - for bigger living rooms, the screen size will have to be even larger.hd tv of 42" samsung or sonys bravia.what brand is the best in hd tvs?

Then you have a crap HDTV. You saying you don't doesn't change the fact that you do. If the game.....ah forget it. If you wish to be blind and say there isn't a big difference, then who am I to correct you. You just keep on telling yourself there isn't really a difference.[QUOTE="TheGreatOutdoor"]

my hdtv is good, the menu's look alot better but the actual game doesnt really look that better, i remember uncharted looked awesome on sdtv, when i played it on hdtv it still looked good but i could see way too many jaggies

I have samsung LE32A565 http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/review/2008/05/31/Samsung-LE32A656-32in-LCD-TV/p1 + my eyesite is very good. The hdtv is connected through HDMI, why would I try to be blind and make up BS? i bought hdtv after listening to people like you who say HDTV is supa amazing and teh difference between hdtv and sdtv is like black and white tv and colour tv. seriously the difference is just not that big. and it deffo doesnt change games

If you don't think it makes a big difference, you are either;
Lying.
Blind.
Both.
If it's no biggie, Switch your PC rez to 640x480, and just leave it. I mean it's no big deal right? Still looks great......
I hate it when say that HD on a smaller TV isn't a difference.........I had a 19 inch Goodmans HDTV for over 18 months, worked like a charmIt's actually such a huge difference when I went to college I bought a 20 inch HDTV, just because after playing in HD for a year I couldn't even stand the thought of SD gaming again. It is a big difference in clarity.

Games look cleaner, crisper and details are much more easily seen in HD. But the game itself doesn't change or anything, it just looks better.
Of course the game has to be made with HD in mind in order for it to look better. If you're playing a game that doesnt even support progressive scan it's gonna look pretty jagged.

I don't care what you say. It is one of three things. Either your tv is screwed up or your eye sight is bad or you are flat out lieing. Either way there is a HUGE difference. I am not going to argue facts with you. They can more than hold their own without my help. And yes son, it does change games and a lot (unless you are talking Wii  ). My first day with my PS3 I used the cables that came with it and was kinda disappointed in what I was seeing. Then the next day I went out and bought a set of HDMI cable and guess what. It was as different as night and day. My jaw dropped when I loaded Uncharted with HDMI cables instead of the packaged cables.my hdtv has no problems, my eyesight is great like I said, and seriously why would I lie dude? my jaw dropped when I played uncharted on sdtv, on hdtv it was the same except now there was a massive amount of jaggies visible now. But the jaggies are only in uncharted though, other games look awesome on hdtv but seriously they arent "game changing". I think sdtv owners arent really missing much. HDTV has better picture ok but is it big enough like you guys say it is? hell no...are SDTV owners really missing much? no way. I guess you are trying to make yourself happy coz you payed so much for the tv .
Agreed it is a HUGE LEAP in quality, take COD WAW for example on my friends setups i can actually see more clearely and further thanx to the better TV.There will be a HUGE change. Anyone that says otherwise, is either blind, or has very, no, make that EXTREMELY poor sight. and I'm pretty sure people with that kind of vision could tell the difference.
Sd Tvs are at 640x480, HDTV is 1920x1080.
OhReally15
from SD to HDmakes a huge difference...
i even noticed a significant difference when i changed my old Orion 32" HDready TV with a Sony46" Full HD... the colours were so much more vibrant/sharp and images look to be running much smoother..
