my hdtv has no problems, my eyesight is great like I said, and seriously why would I lie dude? my jaw dropped when I played uncharted on sdtv, on hdtv it was the same except now there was a massive amount of jaggies visible now. But the jaggies are only in uncharted though, other games look awesome on hdtv but seriously they arent "game changing". I think sdtv owners arent really missing much. HDTV has better picture ok but is it big enough like you guys say it is? hell no...are SDTV owners really missing much? no way. I guess you are trying to make yourself happy coz you payed so much for the tv .

Malta_1980

so you just noticed that only uncharted had jaggies on an HDTV??? seriously come on...is uncharted the only game you played on an HDTV??

its not just about jaggies, ok lets just say uncharted on hdtv had no jaggies too, the overall difference is still not huge or game changing. Its just same with just a bit more clear picture seriously why do people act like higher resolution = super mega huge difference which totally changes the games

personally it does a huge difference, because on LCD you get a much sharper image making it clear and easier to distinguish small stuff in the environment.. also on SDTV its more difficult to read through menus, subtitles etc, words are not clear..

only in some games it is harder to read text on sdtv coz they appear too small, majority of games have clear text on sdtv

There are 4 hdtv's in my house. A 1080p 42" sony LCD, a 1080i 37" vizio LCD, a 1080i 42" LG LCD, and a 50" 1080p panasonic plasma. The panasonic plasma has the best picture by far. Plasmas just have a richer and clearer picture. Plus the panasonic plasmas have a great price. Just go to cnet.com and look at reviews too. That always helps.

They look sharper and crisper. The biggest jump is from the 4:3 to 16:9 aspect.

I think PS3 and 360 both look great on a SDTV. If you don't have the money to get an HDTV and are holding off till you can get one with your console of choice... You really shouldn't wait.

i have had to play on a smallish SDTV recently and, because the screen is small, the picture quality still looks quite sharp. However, when I play on a large SDTV, i hate the slightly blury look. HDTV is obviously much better, although somtimes you get jaggy lines if the game is poorly developed and there is no AA. On an SDTV, things tend to look a lot smoother... but that is the only advtange

The difference is a big one. Play something on the PS3 or the X360 on a HDTV and then go play something on the Wii. Your eyes will bleed.

i may be wrong, but i think only plasma's are available at the 42" size (closest lcd's to that size are 40" and 46").

samsung and sony make the best lcd's, but apparently not the best plasmas. i think pioneer and panasonic make the best plasmas, but not sure

In response to claims thatbrand is just a "brand tax",that's partially because retail salespeople have near-zero education on proper A/V, and partially because most stores don't carry high enough end products that it actually matters. The stuff that is on sale at your typical Best Buy, Target, or Walmart makes my eyes bleed.

Nah. But people need to justify their 1k+ purchases.loco145
I find it funny that the same group of people who say the difference is trivial are also the same people who pay to see movies in theaters, go to IMAX, etc... it's worth upgrading your movie ticket, but it's not worth dropping $10,000 to have the same experience in your home every single day?

LCD screens are available in sizes upwards of 70 inches. However if you want a true theater experience, you need a projector, screen, and theater room.

What an ignorant comment. I had halo 3 on my SDTV, dismounted my SDTV when I got my HDTV and put it on that. The difference is so noticeable it's not funny.

Why all the animosity to HDTV? How long are you guys going to hold on to your crappy standard tube tv's? Its not that expensive to upgrade to a decent hdtv these days. $500 to $800 can get you a decent set. Get with the times.

Videodogg

Because they cant afford it? I embraced the HD era and I LOVE it and refuse to go back to sd.

Why the arguments man its simple damn facts guys the difference is noticeable and on some games its a huge difference in quality, this is nigh on un debatable but yet somehow on the INTERNET in these forums it all becomes a mess.

There will be a HUGE change. Anyone that says otherwise, is either blind, or has very, no, make that EXTREMELY poor sight. and I'm pretty sure people with that kind of vision could tell the difference.

Sd Tvs are at 640x480, HDTV is 1920x1080.

Agreed 100%

Even going from 480P to 720P will be a huge difference.

I like the styling better on the Samsungs. Sony has visible speakers in the front and they are ugly silver color. The Samsung TOC isn't for everyone either. Fortunately not all models have the red color.

I was close to buying a Samsung LED 40" but looking at it side by side to a regular Samsung LCD (a high end one LN40B650) I didn't see a difference in picture quality. The only difference was that the LED had deeper blacks but its definitely not worth the extra $700 more (mine was $1199 that one was $1899).

Heh. Everyone's going on about HDTV utterly changing their gaming experience. Perhaps for the rest of you it does, but it wouldn't for me. Graphics are not important, as far as I'm concerned. Shiny graphics are nice, but hardly essential, I still play timesplitters 2 on my gamecube more than Gears of War for example. I like CRT sets with curvy screens in SDTV, and honestly they fit my needs just fine (Dead Rising aside, and I'm not going to buy a new TV so I can read some text, I'll print a transcript off the internet far more cheaply). Gameplay's the important thing, in my book, and I'm skeptical that better resolution is going to have much of an impact there.

I'll be a technophobic luddite for as long as I damn well please :P

Thats fine for you I guess, but I can't go back to SDTV. Heck, I can't watch sports in anything other than HD anymore. The first time I could see the net behind the goal posts in perfect lifelike detail, I was sold.

Some of these people saying they can't see the difference are flat out lying though. If you can't afford one, just say that.

LCD? or LED? Which one did you think looks better? I think you made a typo. :P But the LED does have some flaws still like bluish blacks sometimes and a less uniform screen then the regular LCDs.

It depends on the size of the HDTV. On a smaller HDTV, the difference is definitely noticable, but not massive. On a large HDTV, the different is pretty damn large. I personally have a smaller HDTV and I've noticed that colors do seem more vivid and there's more overall clarity, so in-game text is easier to read, etc. The only downside is that many games (even games that are seen as being very strong visually) become jaggy fests.

that's ghetto fab. why buy an HD console if you don't have an HD set? you're a moron if you buy a 400$ console to use on a 100$ tv from the 1990s. but it doesn't surprise me. that's like the dudes that buy 10,000$ rims to put on a 2,000$ car.

Thats not entirely true. What if you get a HD console just to play the games and don't care about the graphics. If you sit far enough away from a SD tv it still looks good (nothing compared to HD though).

Hence why I said Dead Rising for an example. ArisShadows

I tried Dead Rising today. Being able to read the text clearly from 5 feet away (of a 21" CRT monitor) brought tears to my eyes.

Nah. But people need to justify their 1k+ purchases.loco145

I spent $50 on a VGA-out cable for my 360 and dug up an old CRT monitor that I found in my basement. Its night and day for $950 less than a new TV. Its all in a matter how far you sit from it.

I used to wonder the same thing, having played my 360 on a 32" SDTV for the past 2 years. Then I picked up a 21.5" Widescreen LCD for my PC, which has 1080p resolution (1920x1080). As a nivce bonus it has an HDMI input allowing me to share it with my 360. And let me tell you, the difference is startling. The picture quality gets this substantial jump in clarity and fidelity, making the overall visuals so much easier on the eyes. Everything just POPs, it's all sharper and cleaner.

I guess you really have to see it with your own eyes to understand. I know my 21.5" display is so much better than the bigger standard screen, I'll never go back :)

Oh and in line with Fox's post above, my LCD only cost me $200 CDN, which is doubled the value for it's dual usage with my PC and console. No extra cables needed as my 360 already had the HDMI.
