There are lots of games like that.

Mirrors edge
Hitman (a great example of a game that takes advantage of what it has been given)
Left 4 Dead
Fallout 1,2,3 & New Vegas
Saints Row series
Skyrim
Cryostasis
ODST

One game on the flip side of that coin was the first Mercenaries game for me. It was the spiritual successor to GTA2 imo and was for some reason **** loads better than the second, which was completely weak in all regards.

Dude... hitman 4 has some amazing and quite challengeing gameplay if you really get in to it and go for those pro SA runs.

It's still weak though. The physics and weapon stats are awful. 47 is meant to be one of the best marksmen in the world with every class of firearm and yet you can't consistently hit a target 10 metres away with a USP in that game. The game forces you to play without guns unless you only use them for executions. Half of the time I only took a weapon so that I could human shield a target and then drop him off a balcony/overboard.

The melee combat is weak as well.

I did 1000 gamerscore that game btw :P. The fake accident scenarios were brilliant.

Definitely FO3, FO3:NV, Oblivion and Skyrim.

The shooting in Fallout is pretty terrible couple that with the abysmal AI, Stealth system blows only saving grace is the atmosphere it creates and the exploration.

Oblivion and Skyrim's combat is just bad, along with the same crappy stealth system from FO3.

It gets better if you level up your sneaking ability, at least in Skyrim it was possible to sneak around an entire dungeon without fighting.

That doesn't make it good though.

The gameplay is fairly decent with mods however. Especially the SkyRe mod.

Heavy Rain. Not that there isn't any gameplay, it simply takes on a secondary role.

In most cases I consider gameplay >>>>> everything else. I'm the kind of guy that would rather play Ninja Gaiden Black for the rest of my days than sit through the God of War series.

But I was playing Journey the other day and I was really enjoying it. Then it got me thinking.

ICO and SotC where two of my favorites last gen, but realistically they weren't anything special in terms of gameplay mechanics.

So far Lost Odyssey has been my favorite jrpg this gen (I dont game on handhelds:P) and it easily has one of the most archaic, uninteresting battle systems around.

What say you System Wars? What games did so well in other aspects that you were able to overlook the meh gameplay?

I'll give you Ico, but SoTC was just simple, not weak. I can't really rmemeber to be honest, the memory is bleak.
