After last week's cracking of the PS3's master key, it was only a matter of time before the first fullpirated game booted up on PS3. And... it has. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has been shown running off a hard drive, with the PS3 convinced it's a PSN game. GeoHot, the hacker responsible for publishing the key online, may wellbe 'totally against piracy', but the pirates in question are gleefully touting 'GeoHot's custom firmware' as their springboard. D'oh.

Fortunately for Sony, at this stage it's still a complex thing to do to get it running, which is well beyond the capabilities of 'normal' gamers. But now the dam has been breached, it's unlikely anyone's going to stick their finger in the hole because they're having second thoughts.

Above: There it is -Castlevania installed to a retail PS3 hard drive like a PSN download game

Now. There is a very strongargument for us not posting stories about pirated games, as it can only exacerbate the problem, so I won't link to the site that reported this. But the comments field there is an amazingly interesting read, if only as a study into human behaviour.

N No problem... Its only a matter of time before the process becomes more streamlined. I can imagine PS3 games being readily patched on torrent sites ready to be played in a few weeks.

Anyone who does this has no business owning a PS3 in the first place. If you want to play a game and you can't afford the $60 price, either don't buy it or just rent it. Rental outlets purchase video game stock from retailers based on their demand. And to anyone who says piracy has never hurt a system...the PC has seen less and less 3rd party titles released with Steam being its saving grace. Street Fighter 4 wasn't even released for the PC and publishers like Ubisoft are going to extreme lengths just to keep people from pirating games. If you ever want another Fallout, Mass Effect, or Assassin's Creed to be released on the PS3 in the near future, don't pirate ANYTHING because 3rd party publishers do care if a system can easily succumb to piracy. They will go to uncomfortable lengths to make sure their game is not pirated and I'm sure no PS3-only gamer wants to have to insert a license key or stay constantly connected to the internet in order to play through a single player campaign... Don't encourage these people, report sites that are uploading PS3 games...

Welcome to the club PS3, the PSP has been warming a seat for you. I don't see the massive deal in the long run, it just means that Sony is finally in the same boat that MS and Nintendo have been in for years.

its actually worse then wat ms had. MS biggest problem was thee J-Tag which has since been made obsolete cause once u go online ur console is banned. ppl can still buy xboxs that have the old dashboard from ebay or craigs list but the others cant be online at all if they r hacked. Sony right nao is sadly in a much worse boat.

Given that it's fully installed to the HDD, I imagine they stripped out the duplicate data. So it wouldn't be taking up as much space on the HDD; as it would on the Blu-ray. There wouldn't be a need for duplicate data, as a HDD doesn't suffer from any of PS3's Blu-ray drive limitations.

he said console gaming is dying black ops sales contradicts that also got 9.0 out of 10 here? contender for shooter of the year?dkdrumin

I don't see how a game that plasters itself on every platform in existence (even my android device), proves that a given platform is safe; because the game happens to be selling on it.

I honestly do think the console "business model" is dying, but that's a different topic.

You're missing the point. An Xbox 360, Wii, and a PSP need to be modded in order to play pirated games, with this hack a PS3 can play games without the need of being modded beforehand

The quality of the game is irrelevant. It sold a bunch of copies. As long as consumers are still giving them money, production companies will still make the games. This PS3 piracy thing is hugely overblown. 95% of PS3 owners will likely never even know that such a thing can be done. In this case, what separates console gamers from PC gamers is the thing that will likely protect consoles from the problems with piracy seen on the PC. Console gamers are, by and large, more "casual," as it were, and won't know about or go to the bother of pirating games. That's my feeling, at least.

There is still a rather lengthy "Softmod" process to get these up and running, wether it's impossible for Sony to solve or not is another matter as well. While hackers may say it's unfixable...Sony also said the system was Un-hackable. There may be ways around this, just like there are ways around having a "Banned Xbox" there are ways around it without the need for a new system.

1. Yes it was

2. This shows you do not keep track of PC gaming, so why even mention it? Ubisoft droped their ridiculous policy.

You couldn't strip the duplicated data without modifying the compiled game code, since it will have hard-coded offsets into disc image.

Wii, 360, PSP and now PS3 all of them can run a pirated games through homebrews the only exception is DS which needs a special card to run the homebrew so that makes it all of them are on the same boat except DS :P.

I was speaking from a assumption. But I dunno, I've seen it done with PS1 games. They weren't designed to run off a SD card; with their duplicate assets combined to help shrink the file size. And yet I've seen applications that do it; and ready the disc image to run on a PSP.

I've got a friend that's always getting his new toys hacked and tweaked, he had all sorts of PS1 games on his PSP, they certainly weren't designed for that.

When did Pc gaming die lol.

You need to tune your sarcasm detector a little. It's a bit off. :)

He used the eye roll emoticon afterward his statement, saying that the PS3, the unstoppable force against piracy, is now on the verge of being susceptible to said piracy. He is also mocking how people say "PC gaming is dying" because of piracy, so now he sarcastically illustrates how all of gaming is dying because all are now vulnerable to piracy.

This has been a brief class of Sarcasm 101. Next week, we are going to learn how to separate fact and opinion.

I suspect within the year PS3 games will be as easy to pirate as Wii games. That didn't stop Nintendo from being successful, in fact PS3s will probably start selling better in third world countries.

MR. Piracy doesn't care about Mr. Quality or MR. Hype.

MR. Piracy had a lot of fun with multiple versions of CoD on the PC and Xbox360 being pirated to hell and back.

This is a quote from a guy over at that site tc posted. His quote is perfect. Rhybo "I made a ruckus about this on the last article... and figure that I might as well here too. *Begin rant* A few days out of the gate and GeoHot's crack has proved to be an effective tool for undermining healthy game development. Everyone who is saying that this isn't going to affect sales or bring down the industry you are right, but that's not the point. The point is that developers are now becoming discouraged at this current... development (hah! redundancy). They aren't going to be homeless but they sure as hell won't be excited to have their hot-off-the-press game be distributed for free. What does that mean? Maybe developers are now seeing the lucrative aspects of DLC and might only release games digitally whilst crushing my harddrive in the process. Perhaps we'd be ushered into an era where we never physically own games anymore but have to pay a yearly subscription fee in order for our games to playable at all. Who knows, maybe certain consoles will no longer receive any games to play since it's a compromised system. These are really off the wall conjectures that I doubt will happen, but if piracy puts a big enough dent in the money-making armor of (insert company here) profits, expect other avenues of distribution and sales to be explored. All that does is make it a pain in the ass for people like me who decide to conduct business in a legitimate manner. Also, let's not forget the fledgling developers trying to get a foot in the door and make a name for themselves. I'm sure they don't have nearly the level of security protecting their prospective cash-cow as Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft do. This is going to discourage them from making orginal, entertaining, possibly revolutionary content (anyone hear of the story of Portal, Minecraft, or Counter-Strike?). All in all, if anyone is even awake to have read this far, it's hurting all of us. Creativity will be overlooked because who wants to dump their time and money into a project that will just end up free in the hands of idiots who don't appreciate the hard work of the people their ripping off? Piracy is taking time away from what matters in video games... entertainment. "How to not lose money" will be a larger bullet point in the development process than "Making a kick-ass game." In the long run I believe it's just stunting the growth of the industry and, personally, I'd like to see what wonders it can produce by the time I run out of 1-ups." *End rant*

Probably won't have a huge impact. I have no desire to pirate games even if it does become more accessible
