The fact that XII is on the list at all, nevermind in the top 4, is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.

It really is the 4th best FF title. Its better than VII and X, that's for sure.

Nevermind Matsuno's influence made the title better written than the "Team 1" Final Fantasies.

The License System is atrocious, the main characters are a joke, and the battles are boring because the game plays itself. Sure the story was interesting, but the actual game? Not so much. Would rather play literally any other Final Fantasy besides VIII, because that game is garbage.

At least X and VII had the decency to have good leveling and combat systems.

I mean, shit, if all I wanted was a well-written JRPG with a good story, I'd just go play Xenogears.

Xenogears is an unfinished pretentious game that tries to do too much...I would not rank it over something like Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden II, Mother 3, and even parts of Lost Odyssey, which its short stories for Kaim's backstory are the king of JRPG writing. At least Xenogears is better than Xenosaga.

And really, VI did not have the best gameplay, but still, its the best overall game. And the International version of FFXII is better than the regular version.

I don't think I'd call that game pretentious (I think it's too smart to be pretentious. It doesn't always execute perfectly, but it is dealing with some pretty heavy ideas), but unfinished? Yeah, it was. I'd still rather play it than FFXII. Of those games, the only one I've played is Lost Odyssey, which was pretty cool, especially the short stories. Now, if only they could move that level of quality into the actual game...

So? XII's gameplay is boring and badly designed. The worst thing you can throw at VI's gameplay is that it's mediocre. XII's is actually bad.

The International version is a crutch used by people to defend the fact that the gameplay in the original is horrendous, especially since it was never released in the U.S. If you have to have a re-release to fix your game, your game was badly designed. End of story.

The story in the actual game (Lost Odyssey) is great as well, minus the villain.

Suikoden II, despite its poor translation, its probably the best overall story for a JRPG. It breaks so many JRPG clichés, and it takes skill to pull off a story that ends up being good vs good.

And really, XII's gameplay is far from bad.....Nevermind the fact that Bioware actually copied it for Dragon Age Origins. And really FFXII is better than DAO, both story and gameplaywise.

It's okay. I dunno if I'd call it "great." Good maybe, but I wouldn't go further.

Never played it. Maybe I'll look into it once I get some free time.

It was pretty bad.

I think they were drawing more from Baldur's Gate than FFXII, but w/e. I'm not really interested in talking about BioWare games at the moment.

No, Bioware basically ripped off the system of FFXII where you can customize what the AI companions would do in a give situation. It took FFXII's Gambit system to the letter.

I am surprised Square Enix did not sue them.

Good for them?

They didn't because they didn't care. Every studio in the industry rips ideas from one another.

But it goes to show that FFXII's combat system was indeed influential and successful.

Okay? That doesn't make it any better.

In your view.

But to many others, clearly it was a successful battle system.

That's fine. They're entitled to their opinion. The system isn't magically better because people like it.

Though i'd rate X higher (top 2 atleast) i agree with the top 5, would probably have XII at 3 though.

Final Fantasy 12 is like Majora's mask. it changed so many things which were previously considered standard. It wrapped up all its changes with an obvious repetitive gameplay. Majora's mask had the time mechanic whereas FF12 merely recycled almost all of its creatures in the different areas and also encouraged grinding with certain mechanics (chain level and random chests)

For some strange inexplicable reason however, FF12 resonated with me the way no other FF before and after did. Maybe it was just the lack of the whiny protaganist (cloud/squall), the lack of the kookie character (vanille/rikku) or maybe it was just the story (basically star wars with space pirates) This game is my fav of all the Final Fantasy games.. Is it perfect? Far from it.. its gameplay incredibly repetitive, the main character is a snooze-fest, espers look flashy but are basically and the final boss is pure crap. But it also has some of the best characters in a FF game (Balthier, Basch, Cid etc) the best world (Ivalice > spira > Midgar what?) and some of best side missions/bosses and most importantly one of the best game mechanics in the gambit and the license systems. So my personal list would be

FF12 - FF6 - FF9 - FFX - FF5 - FF7 - FF8 - FF13 - havent played the rest

can't Gamespot do something about these ridiculous quote chains? Can't they implement an algorithm where after 3 consecutive quotes the last one gets deleted? And I mean completely. This wouldn't be hard at all.

Seems popular to hate on VII these days and whilst its NOT the best in the series like many fanboys claim its definitely better than XII, thats the only real change id make to this list.

Vaan is actually a very good protagonist....if you respect his role in the game. FFXII is unique where the protagonist and deuteragonist (Panelo), really do not move the story, they observe it.

VI oh shit, it's hipster time.

VII's the best final fantasy, it's got huge tits, it's got a foul mouthed but generally misunderstood giant black man with a gatling gun for a hand, he must have one interesting time wiping his ass maybe that's why he's so mad. Terrorism, that's right guys AVALANCHE are terrorists, it's got Ninja's and evil corporations, and it's got a giant box cutter. Deal with it.
