In Spore - you basically play God. You create your own creature, have that species develop into an intelligent one so they create colonies and eventually a civilisation. You create economies and can wage wars with other creatures on the planet.

You eventually get good enough technology to explore space and eventually, different galaxies, where you can create atmospheres on barren planets in order to create colonies and civilisation on them. You can also wage war with other civilisations on other planets in order to gain dominance. And that's the extent of what I know, as there's far more to it than that.

And you're telling me that a sequel to a game with one of the shallowest storylines in the history of gaming will come close to this innovative and absolutely jaw-dropping experience that is Spore? The best parts of GeOW were the gameplay and graphics, which re-defined the shooting genre, apparantly, so how on Earth will GeOW 2 improve upon that? :|

Way to select one of the weaker (hell even that's a valid point) points out of the few I'd made. If this isn't logical, what I've been saying along, then I don't know what is:

It will not make any 'vast' improvements in the gameplay or story or even graphics aspects due to:

The story was non-existant in the first game, they can't answer any ineresting questions because none were created in the first.

Tell me how they can make 'vast' improvements in the gameplay area? GeOW basically revolutionised gameplay in third-person shooters, so you're telling me for the sequel they'll completely change the ****of play? Lul no.

Graphics-wise...well. GeOW is still one of the best looking games to date, so if we see vast visual improvements, then they will need to be on par with Crysis.

Basically, Gears of War 2 'could be' an enhanced GeOW1. You think that's enough to be better than the best games of 08 so far? :|

It re-defined it with the cover system (which imo, is inferior to Rainbow Six: Vega's cover system anyway...this game was an FPS, before you use it against me), which made it far easier and less clunky to play third-person shooting games.

With all those improvements? It's a step in the right direction I suppose in story terms. And "completely destructable environments"? I'll believe that when I see it. Also, tell me how GeOW 2 can be compared to Spore? They just don't come close in terms of depth to be honest.

I didn't mention anything about improvements to Gears of War, let alone vast ones. However there are improvements accross the board like someone posted up above. Will the improvements solidify a nod for GOTY, who knows but no one has the foresight to say 'it won't' as though its fact.

GOTY doesn't go to the highest score like you've suggested with GTA4 and MSG4 by citing their 10 scores.
Example: 2004, San Andreas releases with the highest score of 9.6, to get beat by WoW for game of the year.
Ex: 2001, Halo Combat Evolved releases with the highest score of 9.7, losing GOTY to GTA3.
Ex: 1997, GoldenEye 64 launches with a 9.8, the highest that year and still loses to Total Annihilation for GOTY.

I know, but it certainly cements their places as at least nominees, I don't think there's any possible way two tens cannot be nominated at least.

The story aspect of GeOW does not apply to all other sequels. As I've said: GeOW had little to no story, therefore leaves no questions to be answered in the sequel, making the story for GeOW2 one not to be anticipated.

To be honest, you're right: I don't know for sure.

1) I'm too tired to keep on typing like this, since the arguement is going nowhere and can't be proved until review day.

2) I've always been critical on GeOW. I really didn't like it much at all, and because it's rated so highly, I'm over-critical on it.

Besides, from what you've shown me in the last part, sequels don't win GOTY's and innovative games do. So Spore should be a shoe-in for winner based on that criteria?

Okami and R6: V are solid games, but they just don't compare to MGS4, GTA4 and perhaps Spore. GeOW2 certainly has it's work cut out for it.

Yes, the innovative games have usually got the nod, which will probably be Spore..Gears pretty much won because there wasn't a TPS that perfected the gameplay, there were much better story driven games in 2006, however that isn't always the deciding factor if you consider gamespots history of picking the game of the year.

I think people are way to critical of Gears, its cliched, its stupid and cheesy and its not the place to go looking for an award winning narrative.

Why is being GOTY so important?

I mean, I couldn't care less if SMG, GTA IV, RE5 or SF4 were GOTY.
