Gears of War: Merits for GOTY 2006

I recently bought Gears of War, PC. I've tried playing it with the K/Mouse and with the 360 controller.

I've come to the conclusion that it isn't a very good game. I actually feel it was worse than Unreal 2. I do not think it should of made GOTY in 2006. It should of been called Gears of Bore.

Please tell me why I'm wrong and what it brought to gaming in 2006 and hence its accolades as Game of the Year for Gamespot.

Quite frankly, I don't see anything great in this game. Enlighten me.

I enjoyed it.

Thought the multiplayer was fun too.

Hype did overshadow its faults - like many games out there

What I don't understand is why lemminigs weren't going GeOTY like the sheep are doing because of SMG.

Funny how Goty meant nothing that year but it seems to mean everything this year.

How is Gears of War even comparable to a game like Unreal? They are so different...

Gears got GOTY for sheer kickassery, and being the first next-gen game.

Gears of war for the 360 was game of the year. Its praktically the same game, but the 360 version is waaay better. And I mean online, way more people play it online (stil) and the fact that almost everybody has a headset makes it very enjoyable. BTW the mouse and keyboad gameplay sucked. Porting gears to the PC was a big mistake.skatefreak89

The PC version IS better... go read what GS says on GeOW PC.

Sorry, I have the 360 version and still think its a total blast to play, much better than the normal run and gun shooters.

Online is fun, not groundbreaking or mindblowing awesome, but solid and good, for a first year title it pretty damn impressive, the only first year title I think is better is Soul Calibur, which was a launch title for the Dreamcast

It was a more complete game on PC, but that doesn't mean that the game's real home wasn't on the 360. It just worked better with a controller on a TV set than on a computer screen with a keyboard and mouse.

Um... The 360 version of multiplayer was worse due to p2p. Host advantage was and still is a huge froblem for Gears Online 360.

What I think is true is the game is better suited to consoles, wheras the PC version is better.

Weird. It was the opposite for me. I bought gears along side my 360 and was wowed by it for the first week (multiplayer included) and then Oblivion arrived and my oppinion on Gears changed greatly.

Also, I think Gears of War is best on the 360. Although the PC version has downloadable content and better graphics, the 360 version has much better controls imo.

I don't like it either. It's not a bad game, but the campaign is short, and the story so horrifyingly bad, that the single player falls flat on its face for me. The multiplayer is extremely repetitive, and on the 360 was guaranteed to be full of racism and hate (although admittedly, the second part of that criticism is hardly the game's fault).SpigleyMcCheese

The cover system was good and it still looks amazing to this day, it definitely gives any other console game out a run for its money. The multiplayer works, it can be good or bad but like all multiplayer its about who you are playing with. Thats it though, I don't hate Gears infact its really enjoyable, but I definitely am not taking the time to list its faults. It should not have been the goty, but it won by default for being the most attractive game seen on a console at the time.

Then again, the end of that year seemed to be packed with eye candy. Microsoft had Gears, Nintendo had Twilight Princess, and Sony had a bunch of blind fans proclaiming the power of the cell :P.

Mass Effect, Halo 3, Forza 2 . the only OUTSTANDING games, and well, then ayour what? 9? AA's? consisting mediocre games like Dead or Alive 4 ect.

DoA4 is defintly mediocre, very little substance.... 8.8 ... you can tell how easily Xbox360 games were scored due to "new gen" hype, PDZ is another perfect example.

Your right, I didnt say it, and I didnt imply I was better than reviewers, I'm just not so easily ammused as I use to be while he has to keep every game with a respectable rating.

Something like Mario Glaaxy to me , it was only "Great" good fun playthought, now shelved not to be used for 2-3 years when I feel like playing it for nostalgia .... so it doesnt get"outsanding" in my book.

No it wasn't it failed to do what other rpgs of the day do like sidequests (eventhough the story is a step up from the other games)
