Story
Continuing from God Of War 3, having murdered basically all of the Greek gods in his quest for vengeance, Kratos now resides in the realm of the Norse gods along with his son Atreus. Kratos must teach his son how to survive while his past come up as the Norse gods are aware of him murdering the Greek pantheon.
Gameplay
The biggest change is that the camera is now behind Kratos' back rather than having the fixed camera angles of the previous games. Kratos now wields the Leviathan axe and a shield in a brutal up close combat system that has many similarities to Dark Souls. The main difference being how tactical it can get with the environment playing a huge role in combat alongside Kratos' ability to throw his axe and recall it back. Atreus will also be involved in combat as the square button will command him to fire arrows.
Besides the combat, puzzles are also making a return but we haven't seen much of them. They will be focused around environmental puzzles with Kratos' axe throw playing a big role in them. With the increase in scale there will also be a good amount of traversal. Kratos will be able to rock climb and he will also have access to a boat to bring him across the different areas, that alone puts it on par with Sea of Thieves in the amount of things you do.
The game also features RPG elements. Kratos will gain experience and put points into skills trees for both Kratos and Atreus. Players will be able to craft and upgrade Kratos' armor. The Leviathian Axe will be upgraded using runes so players can tailor Kratos to fit their playstyle. Best of all there will be no microtransactions!

Game Structure
According to the director, the game is said to take 25-35 hours to complete. It is neither open world nor linear. The level design will be hub based with the Souls series/Bloodborne being a major influence. Levels will be interconnected and wrap around each other with being able to go back to previous areas.
There will be optional areas with side quests and side bosses that aren't needed in the completion of the main story in order to encourage exploration. There will be 9 major areas that represent the 9 worlds in Norse mythology but we have only seen one of the areas so far. The leaked image of the map showed one area so the game is theoretically 9 times larger than we even thought.

Geoff Keighley
I was blown away by God of War. Played first 2.5 hours last week. It's a faithful yet deeply evolved version of the classic series across every dimension: Combat, story, puzzles and graphical prowess.
While the team doesn't want us sharing much on story, there's one sequence early on that takes the scale of a God of War boss fight in a totally different and more intimate direction -- and it works, because the emotion is just as big and visceral.
From what I was told we only played about 5% of the full game. If that's the case, this is going to be an epic on the scale of Horizon -- and with tons of weapon and skill tree upgrades, I can't wait to see how the game opens up in the other 95%.
Whew. Rolled credits on God of War with a few hours to spare until this Missouri trip. Can’t wait to tell you about it Thursday and on this week’s Kinda Funny Gamescast. pic.twitter.com/N1tMTUVUit

Can't wait until I can talk about this game. Embargo up on the 12th.
Skill Up tends to be hard on cinematic games fyi, did not like The Last of Us or Horizon.
I’ve been playing (and just finished) God of War ?
