I was bored so I was checking the different forums on xbox.com when I came upon a thread dealing with the new Falcon units.

Multiple owners have reported around a 25 degree improvement in temperature.

360 without falcon: 120 F

360 with falcon: 95 F

The way to identify the units with the new chip:

  1. Lot #0734 (Halo 3) or later (all SKUs)
  2. Manufactured on or after 8/24/07(An HDMI Premium manufactured on 8/19 has been reported as 65nm.)
  3. Team FDOU (Other teams may be Falcon as well, but none have been reported)

The Lot# and Team information is printed on the box. The Manufacturing date is next to the serial#...I believe you can read this information by lifting a little tab.

Some people have reported that the new Premium units with Forza II and Ultimate Alliance bundled in are all Falcon units, but make sure the Lot# is correct.

Not all Halo Edition 360s and few Elite models have the new chip. It seems that your best chance to get the Falcon is with a Premium or an Arcade (HDMI is now standard on all 360s).

Yea I saw that the new SKU's were still getting the RROD. Plus MS announced there will be a new GPU in August 2008.

If only Microsoft would address that pesky disk drive problem. Either way, 360's will still RROD. It's heat from the GPU, not the CPU, that usually causes the systems to puke.

If your 360 has been repaired recently do they put a falcon in it? If my 360 breaks again I will probably buy one of these new ones as a backup.

I've read all kinds of theories...but the common denominator is heat.

Some users with both units (old and new Falcon) wrote that when they touch the back of an old unit after around 2 hours of playing a game the unit is hot. When they touch the back of a falcon chip they say they it feels barely warm (95 F).

All I know is that if my 360 ever gets RRoDed again, MS better give me a console with the falcon chip.. Already had it ring on me once, as well as another console having disc reading problems.

Some of units in stores right now (some Halo editions and most of the Elites) still don't come with the Falcon chip. Also, consider the possibility that the accounts of new SKUs with RROD problems might originate from Sony fanboys masquerading as 360 owners.

right on. Now all they have to do is work on the smaller issues of the disk scratching, and then drop their online to free. then they'll be mighty tempting.

Good.

I'll pick up a 360 later along the way.

Basically when it has more games that aren't shared with PS3.

I'mmost likely gonna fetch one up in Winter 08 or Spring 09.

The price will be EVER lower (Ipresume)and there will be even more 360 exclusives out.

I saw it in EB, and the employee was telling the customer that this new chip will really only "slow down" the rate of occurence.

The 360 suffers a design flaw where heat is not properly dissapated. However I think both the new CPU and GPU should be able to handle the heat. If not.......well then they'd probably have to redesign the system.

Another guy reported these findings:

______________________________Pro 360 Falcon ____Halo 3 Zephyr

Power at rest after startup (no DVD): 92 Watts...................140 Watts

With Halo 3 DVD in but not in game: 117 Watts.................171 Watts

Well, you know...since after a whole year Sony has released ZERO AAA exclusives (R&C is down to 89 on Metacritic) and most multiplatform titles suck on the PS3, serious gamers had to put up with RROD problems. But they can look at this thread for information on how to buy an "Xbox 360 that will work now". *booes for Sony*

it sucks to have bought a Falcon, only to realize it's still not fixed. It has to go through two hardware revisions until any hope can be had for it. That's sad.

Ahh, yes...EB employees are authorities in electrical engineering. ;)

Get it now from BB with a replacement warranty and don't worry about it. I have a launch unit and I play it death...but it has not died. LOL

LMFAO

I just posted this information and we already have a cow inventing the new round of misinformation that will be used on the board for weeks to come.

Folks, this here is the birth of a lie.

Hey Mordred19, you know what's sad? R&C is not AAA on Metacritic anymore. You know what sucks? Virtua Fighter 5 for the 360 is still a AAA. :P

Wow. You are really on the defensive here. What I said is not a lie, but you immediately call me a cow, and bring up flopped games that don't concern me. I dont' care about what game scored what and where. You are intent to point that out to me, just because I said someting unflattering about the360.I'm a manticore, smart guy.

You're making such a big deal about my comment. It's the truth that the 360 will have gone through two hardware revisions: one for the Falcon, andanother for the Jasper next year. The GPU is mostly the problem, so adopters of the Falcon don't have the "perfected" console.

I know what kind of person you are when you make quick judgements and accuse others of being fanboys.

It took them almost 3 years to do this while the PS3 and Wii have had no problems from the get-go. I bet the 360 problems aren't even completely gone too. It might still overheat or breakdown, just not from the CPU.

Yea I saw that the new SKU's were still getting the RROD. Plus MS announced there will be a new GPU in August 2008.

Link? Or I'm not buying it.

Plus cows where did this rumor start that the GPU is the main heat problem in the 360? LINK? Plus I have seen many threads online to fix the RROD problem by just replacing the CPU X-clamps.

It's probally the shape of the dam thing. Look at Sony's console, total opposite of 360- it's bubbled out instead of sunk in or concaved inwards. Well with the cheaper cheaper chips and few tweaks....

... right.

The GPU is the problem. The "falcon"makes it 1 out of10 RROD, as opposed to 1 out 5. I think the 65 nm GPU in August will make it like, 1 out of 50 lol.

And you know... they didn't replace every console for free... at first anyway.

Wow, enough to fix 2.5 million consoles... out of the (then)10 million out?!1 out of 4 isTHEIR estimated failure rate?!!? HA.

Well, Sony has had to distribute commitment to games over 3 platforms, while MS chose to focus on one. When you look at the big picture, the entire PS brand has produced many enjoyable games since the next gen started.

MS has delivered the games. Sony, well...you know. Do Cows like it when Sony promises the stars for $600...and then delivers Lair?

wow looky there you are getting walked all over again. You get it back it has the potential to break again.

Any product has the potential to break. The PS2 had many problems. PS3s do break down, you know.

Do you know of a product that is guaranteed never to break...ever?

And sony will give us the "stars" when MGS4 comes out.(yeah I said just wait, please post a fanboy remark as you are accustomed to doing)Star67

Bah...its more likely that you will SEE starts when the next MGS4 delay is announced.

And yeah, just wait. Of course I was going to say that. Cows are the laughing stocks of the gaming world for buying a machine 1-2 years before the game you guys want to play is released. But hey, whatever tickles your fancy.

Better late then never I guess. I can Leave my PS3 on for 24 hours without it crashing, can 360 do that? black_awpN1

Yes, I have left my 360 on for more than 24 hours more than once. I did this when it was new (before the RROD problems were reported)...and a couple of times by mistake (forgot to turn it off).

I would not leave my launch 360 on just for the hell of it. I know that there are problems with the hardware.

The 360 is just not as fragile as Cows makes it out to be.

Actually I heard it was the GPU that ultimately is responsible for the RROD.TimeToPartyHard

Yes, it is, but an overall lower temperature helps you know. BTW, for some time now 360s came equipped with an extra heat sink to the GPU, and the next 360 motherboard revision, Jasper, will have 65nm GPUs as well, and smaller memory chips. By then RROD may very well be a thing of the past.

PS: yes, the failure rate of the 360 is very high, but my console, manufactured 25-11-2005 (day-month-year) still works perfectly without any modifications. Go figure.

[QUOTE="Jared2720"]It's pretty sad when, after two years, a thread is made that basically says "Xbox 360's will work now!" *audience applause* Mordred19

Im guessing you like it when people walk all over you then?

Well, Sony has had to distribute commitment to games over 3 platforms, while MS chose to focus on one. When you look at the big picture, the entire PS brand has produced many enjoyable games since the next gen started.

Wow. That is the weakest excuse I've ever heard.

Supposing that you are correct, that "distributed commitment" has surely not helped Sony this gen. Heck, they are begging devs not to abandon them. As a 360 owner and a hardcore gamer, I'm glad Sony embarked in this distributed commitment of theirs since it gave MS a chance to take a commanding lead (while Sony was producing Lair...lol).

Falcon is the name of the revised motherboard, and not the name of the new 65nm CPUs. I think the new 65nm CPU are still known as Xenon. But yes, a good way to differentiate the CPUs is call the now ones Falcon ;).

There was a thread with a link a few weeks back, but like any thread that has anything negative about the 360 it gets little or no attention. I'll see if I can find it.

They should really speed the fans up in the 360. After my "30" day warrenty was up, i opened my xbox up to see how you could make it run cooler. The fans in the 360 run at 5v, if you rewire them they run at 12v. After i was done playing my 360 before id touch the heatsinks to see how hot the system was, and it would hurt to touch it, after the fan mod the heatsinks never go above room temp. Even though it may now sound like a jet taking off, it rreally does help the system, and im sure many people would rather have a loud system, then a broken one.
