I'm not sure actually?
Take two of the games that stick out as games I really like in recent times. Bioshock and fallout 3 - I'm not convinced that the story was really the thing that I liked about the games.
I just liked the idea of the games, if that makes sense? I don't know if that falls under story or what?
For me, story certainly comes first. However I'm sure everyone can agree that if a game is broken, it doesn't matter how good the story is. So I guess that means that gameplay is a close second.
I definitely don't care as much about graphics, but I have noticed that I am becoming spoiled. It is really hard for me to play older games, even if they have a great story if the graphics look really bad. I'll still do it, but it is a bit of an eyesore.
wow I can't believe that their are 6 votes in story over gameplay.JangoWuzHerenot anymore dude, that was quite a scare huh?
Story > Graphics ( Art style ) > Gameplay hayato_What? Gameplay is most important by far. Gameplay is the actual playing of the game, story is just a way to explain what your doing and graphics are so you can see what your doing. Now of course the latter two are important but they are nothing, repeat NOTHING, with gameplay because their purpose is to compliment the gameplay.

For me though its story and graphics over gameplay. I just like one other the other. Period.

All 3 have to be good.
You cant play a game with blocky graphics.
Technology is moving forwards, not backwards.
Do you honestly wanna play mario 2d over and over again on the same graphics card?
Sometimes, first impressions count.
At first glance, its graphics, then gameplay, then eventually the story as you complete it. Thats how things roll out.
Crysis was a step forward and i give any developer the respect for putting effort into graphics, animations, model details as well as physics too.

When I can exprience all three its like a wild ride.

Well then in your original post you shouldn't of made it seem like you where stating your opinion to be fact. Anyways, why do prefer story and graphics over gameplay? You can have a game that has great gameplay and great graphics with a worthless story and it will be great (like all the mario games). You can have a game with great gameplay and great story but with worthless graphics, and it will be great (Old classics with outdated graphics are fun to this day). But if you have a game with great story and great graphics but worthless gameplay then the game becomes unplayable or an animated movie! Graphics and story are expendable, but gameplay isn't.

Great story can always make up for bad gameplay, but good gameplay can never make up for a bad story. There is something you can get out of a good story that you can never get out of great gameplay. Adventure games have worthless forgetable gameplay but are always remembered for their story. Graphics can be obsolete, sound can be obsolete, even gameplay is not always immortal, but story always is the longest lasting factor of any game. What am I doing when I play the original Metal Gear Solid? I'm not playing it for the gameplay, I'm certainly not playing it for the graphics, but I'm playing it for the story, and that is something that will always be remembered for something beyond nostalga.

I'm not saying story isn't important. It is. I'm saying that it isn't AS important as gameplay. All the mario games have no story yet they are masterpieces. I have yet to see a game with no gameplay but a great story be called a masterpiece.

I just see story and graphics as bonuses that can really take a game to the next level, but can't save a game with bad gameplay to begin with.
2d games arent bad you can still have grait graphics on a 2d game, i mean even you fanboys must like street fighter?
there should be 2 branches below graphics, the ones that say "realistic" for those who are not into art
and "artistic" for those who enjoy cool awesome looking stuff
All 3 have to be good.

Why can't you play a game with blocky graphics? Boom Blox and Katamari both have blocky graphics and I think they're both great. Crysis was indeed a step forward for graphics, but it would have meant nothing had it not had the gameplay to back it up. To each their own.
[QUOTE="hayato_"][QUOTE="Head_of_games"] What? Gameplay is most important by far. So everyone else's opinion is facts, while mine is opinion or something. I've read everyone elses comments and I don't think that I responded in a fact or opinion thing tbh. Example: Mass Effect : Im currently playing this game and the story is wonderful along with the art style and graphics. The gameplay is throwing me off a bit and I think it definitly needs some refinement. If it wasn't for the story (or story arcs so to say ) I probably wound have just taken the game back already. That also works vice versa. Good story, bad gameplay (or gameplay elements ) , Bad gameplay, good story. etc Lastly, people need to stop being so closeminded on the issue. Gamers are unique and diverse, meaning they like different things and we use video games for all sorts of things nowadays. I just prefer one over the other like I stated in the above posts. This is actually the reason why we have genres to this day also. So answer this question: Is there a rule to how I should enjoy a game?

Let's face it,a game can have graphics that open a portal to heaven, and a story that can bring tears to the eyes of a war veteran with no eyes, but if the gameplay sucks, the game is bad.If you want a story,go watch an Oscar nominated film.If you want graphics,go watch a special effects blockbuster.Games are built on gameplay, everything else is secondary.789shadowdoesn't mean you can't have all three either. and besides, in order to play the game, you kinda need the visuals (i.E graphics). and considering what console generation we're in, i'd prefer it if mots of the games that came out today looked a tad bit better tha they did last gen.

I'm not saying that graphics and story aren't important, but that without good gameplay,a game cannot be good.Lair is a perfect example.
