-1 year headstart = kaput (wii surpassed it in a record 9 months in retail)

-losing in worldwide totals for the entire year of 2007 and 2008 to sony PS3

-home of some of the best games like halo 3,bioshock,cod4,gears of war

-best online service of the big 3

SO WHY IS MS STILL BOUND TO BE OVERTAKEN BY PS3 SALES WORLDWIDE ,WHY IS MS DESTINED TO BE 3RD THIS GEN

It only appeals to americans. Games like Gears of war, Halo, aliens, americans eat it up, compare it to the majority of exclusives on the Japanese consoles there is a lot more variety

I think its because MS has puts its focus on a pretty small audience with the 360. It has a lot of great games, but a lot of those games always focus on the same people.

By what measure is it failing? Didn't it gross more money and sell more copies of games than any of it's competition in 2007?

It had to fight against the brand and marketing power of Sony which had dominated the market for 10+ years and it held steady all year with Sony just pipping them in worldwide sales in the end. It also had to contend with the unexpected success of the Wii...and yet it still sold more games than it.

Tell us about the great variety available on PS3 as I don't see any. If you mean the Wii then I agree, it has a broader appeal.

360 wins in the hearts and minds of it's supporters regardless of what 'place' it ends up taking in the so-called 'console wars'.

You can quote me on this: A third-place console with first place games and first place online service still wins...

360 isn't LOSING (caps) anything...

Thats the thing, the PS3 isn't just being marketed as a game console, Blu Ray is one of the selling points as well, people are buying it for that.

Reliability, MS brand image, and pay-to-play online.

Argue XBL features all you want, but in my mind and in a lot of people's opinions it is automatically not the best simply because it is not free to play online. I can play many of the 360's games on the PS3 and yet my online play is free. End of story for me and many others (I just spoke to a "non-hardcore" acquaintance about the two yesterday and his reaction to 360's pay-to-play was pretty negative.)

The Ps3 and 360s big FPS- Halo and Resistance, Sci Fi shooter

The 360s TPS- Gears of War, Sci- fi shooter, Ps3- Uncharted, adventure shooter

360s big RPG- Mass Effect sci fi shooter, the ps3s folklore- fantasy action adventure

whether they are better or not is besides the fact that it has more VARIETY, 360 does focus too much on Sci-fi

The Wii? The Wii has a terrible variety of games if you just look at it a bit differently. There are only two types of games on the Wii so far, good must own titles like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Metroid Prime 3, and then there are all of the garbage shovelware games. In my opinion, the Wii has the worst games out of the 3.

Yes it has too many sci-fi FPS games but then that is but one genre and not a good example of this VARIETY you keep shouting about ;).

Yeah, but it's BIG rpg is Mass Effect. If your looking at it from a consumer stand point (not a hardcore gamer). You see the 360 has halo, gears, mass effect, too human. All those games look the same. While Ps3 has final fantasy, metal gear solid, ratchet (they are known franchises). It looks to have more variety

I"m not saying the 360 doesnt have variety i'm saying it's biggest most marketed games: Halo Gears and ME all look the same. So it comes off as having less variety, which doesn't appeal to other regions

You mentioned 1 released game...casuals are not buying based on the possibility of MGS and FF being good anymore than they are buying the 360 based on things like Banjo, Fable 2 and Alan Wake. Also the 360 has a host of games in other catagories that are available on the shelf right now. Anyone looking at those can plainly see there is FAR more variety on 360.

Oh I also forgot Crackdown, Saints Row, Test Drive and a much wider selection of arcade games.

Like I said I didn't say 360 has less variety

It's my theory that it comes off as having less especially to other regions which is why it doesn't sell well outside of the U.S.

SO WHY IS MS STILL BOUND TO BE OVERTAKEN BY PS3 SALES WORLDWIDE ,WHY IS MS DESTINED TO BE 3RD THIS GEN

Kakarot00769

PS3 will eventually overtake 360's userbase...

...but it'll have very little to do with gaming...so as a gamer, I could honestly care less. :|

A $400 Blu-Ray player is a very powerful thing.

PS2 had a massive userbase but only about 10% of it's owners bought the biggest games (FFX / GTA ).

Meanwhile, roughly 40% of 360 owners bought Halo 3 :|

It'll be the same story with the ps3...super high userbase / average attach rate & game sales.

It's not losing as the software numbers don't lie so as of now it is the # 1 this gen ( not lol s-new-zzz gen ) console with gamers !

The reason on this site that it would appear that somehow it is losing is ...... Drum Roll

System fans ( or MS corp. haters - take your pick as they are everywhere here ) out number actual informed, pure, Game fans - that's it - nothing more need be said except maybe - ask Sega why the DC failed when it delivered all the goods ( heck, it had a better online structure back than then does the currant Nintendo plan for Wii :? ) yet - well you prolly know what happened. ! ;)

Silenthps

You've missed the point...

Basically, I was saying that userbase is irrelevent.

The 360 userbase will most likely cap out at around 35-40 million...but those 40 million will buy just as many games as the 80+ million ps3 owners.

Every1 applauds the ps2 for it's 120+ million users...yet ignores the fact that about 100 million of those systems rarely, if ever, have games inserted into them.

Therefore, saying the 360 is sh***y because it'll eventually have the lowest userbase is just silly...especially when it dominates in software sales.

Why are they loosing the War?...here are My Takes

1) Microsoft Red Ring of Death and Disc drive problem (happen to my 4 month old xbox, happen to my brother in law 9 months old xbox, it can happen sooner it can happen later but i see all xbox almost suffer from this at one point of their life)

2) Loose battle of the HD-DVD format (thanx Toshiba!), Microsoft didnt push enought for it (like introducing a HD-dvd Xbox360, not just the add on that in reality it was doomed from the beginning, remember sega cd add on or 32X addon??)

3) Blue-ray winning and choose has the next format from the entire industry, people prefer a blue ray player that can play games and movies than just play only movies of course (and its the best blue ray payer in the market right now compare to the rest).

4) Increase of games of the Ps3 (a few month ago were a drought but now its changing the tide) with comparable quality like Xbox360.

5) Price cut of the PS3...

Any more points?

There are numerous reasons why the 360 isn't winning, but I think the most important one is the changing market. This is the first generation where we've seen consoles designed to truly be more than, well, consoles. The Wii is designed as a whole new gaming experience and appeals to a consumer base that prior consoles could never have reached. The PS3 is marketed as much as a BR player as it is a game console giving it an added value for both gamers and the average consumer; a gamer could see it as a console with a free BR player, or the average consumer could see it as a BR player with a free PS3. Finally the 360 is designed to operate as a media centre and a link between your PC and your TV, allowing you to easily make use of various multimedia features. Simply put these products all attract different consumers, and you could easily justify buying any one of them even if you never plan on playing a game.

What this means is sales aren't the same indicator they were before. In prior generations the highest selling console was generally the best because in order to justify buying a PS2 or a PS1 or an SNES etc. it had to play the best games. But now we see people buying 360's to use for video conferencing, Wii's being used for physiotherapy, and the US air-force is buying PS3's. For the average consumer the PS3 doesn't need the best games because of its BR drive, the 360 doesn't need the best games because of XBL and its media centre features, the Wii doesn't need the best games because of its unique controls etc. Unlike previous generations, we can no longer make apples-to-apples comparisions between the consoles.

It's because the Xbox360 is a sub-par PC, nothing more. Both the Wii and the PS3 offer something a PC cannot.

Gears of War = PC. Call of Duty 4 = PC. Mass Effect = PC. Bioshock = PC.

360 will probably end up in 3rd because of it's lack of appeal to the masses.

Assuming that the rate in constant, how long will it take PS3 to surpass the 360 in sales? cosmostein77
well going by the vgchartz estimates(i know i know) PS3 is outselling the 360 approximately 30-40k worldwide a week, so thats anywhere from 120-160k a month, so to make up ground on a 6.7 million deficit(once again vgchartz), it would take about 4-5 years.

Here are some of the issues I have with the 360 that I think would contribute to their failings:

Issue 1: Poor hardware. I haven't had mine fail but obviously there are issues if Microsoft had to extend the warranty covering RRoD problems. I'm sure this held back some buyers. Also, aesthetically it isn't the most pleasing thing I've seen. Its not terrible but it isn't not terrible, either.

Issue 2: Its Microsoft! Its really hard to support Microsoft, ever. I think the 360 is great and it has a fantastic catalog of games but I still get that dirty feeling knowing its a Microsoft product. I imagine there is even less love for Microsoft outside of the US. Try as they might they are simply just not a consumer friendly company.

Issue 3: Price. Now that Blu-ray has full support of the industry its hard not to see the 360 as a bit over-priced these days. But its not just the console itself; $100 Wifi adapteres, HDDs that run from $100 for a measely 20gb to $180 for 120gb, $50/year for XBL or no multiplayer options, over-priced memory cards with no option to use much cheaper SD cards or flash drives. I'm sure this turned off a few people as well.

MS wanted to be first, Nintendo wanted to something different and accessable, Sony wanted to give highest value to the tech savy. The wii looks fun, but is crazy impossible to find. 360 and ps3 are both too pricy for me still. While the best games are on 360, I cant afford the console or the $60 games. If i had the money, I would buy the blu ray player that can play games too. Maybe its a signal that gamers are getting older (34 average age now?? i heard that somewhere) but i would still watch movies 3 times more than play games.

Add in the mystery of Japanese gaming to everyone who doesnt live there. Honestly, if the multi million dollars of research didnt make MS smart enough to crack it, no poster here will have any extra insight. You have to leave it as a mystery, its not your turf, how can you really know??? Yes I know (insert reason here) was a good idea, but MS forsaw that with their heavy market research and did (rational here) and it still failed. Can't make the horse drink people.

Americans dont buy Gundam Wing games, Japanese don't buy Halo or Gears of war games. It is as simple as that. Also Europeans don't really reject Halo or Gears but they don't embrace it either like they embrace titles like MGS4, Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy.

Oh yea, ....RROD.

Kakarot00769
Because alot of those great games are also on PC, which leaves every PC thats looking for a console looking at the PS3 more. Also the RRoD issue isn't helping anything. PS3 dropped it's price.
