I disagree wholeheartedly reach is unstoppable GT isnt what it use to be.bigboss5ak
yet a glorified demo (prologue) sold nearly 5 million copies with a smaller user base
This topic is locked from further discussion.
As I stated though; I still expect GT5 to sell more than Reach. I'm just saying that the past games in the series benefited from having a far larger install base.mythrol
Not just about the install base, GT series help built the install base on the PS2, that's why it ranks as the highest sellers on that system. Gran Turismo is one franchise that is as popular with gamers as it is with non-gamers, expect PS3 sales to reach new heights with the release of GT5 and I am sure it will end up becoming the best selling GT title.
[QUOTE="Kashiwaba"][QUOTE="mythrol"]TBH I think GT5 will sell more, but it will be close. If you compare the sales history of the two GT5 has won out more than lost; However that was back on PS2 days where Sony controlled a huge % of the market. I think there are a few upper echelon of games that can compete with sales figures. GT series, Halo Series, Modern Warfare series, Mario (main games), GTA series. mythrol
I dont think this matters specially if you consider how bad was the piracy on PS2 and we have some good examples
MGS 4 sold nearly the same as how much its PS2 prequels sold, GoW III is outpacing GoW II according to early reports. FFXIII selling at the same pace as FFXII (on PS3 alone)....
And the 360 doesn't have piracy? TBH I've never seen a pirated PS2. And I highly doubt that effected GT sales especially when there was 120m+ PS2 in circulation. I'd be willing to bet that had more of an impact. The other games you mentioned all had extenuating circumstances. MGS4 was the first "BIG" PS3 game. GOW3 was the end of the trilogy, and GOW2 was a late gen PS2 release (after the PS3 was already out) that could have been easy for some to overlook. FFXIII came when there was a huge JRPG drought and the last FF game was released over 5 years ago. As I stated though; I still expect GT5 to sell more than Reach. I'm just saying that the past games in the series benefited from having a far larger install base.you didnt see any pirated PS2 :P where do you live?

Also, you are really underestimating the influence that Halo has on the american market.
Swift_Boss_A
Not as much as people are underestimating Gran Turismo in the worldwide market!
This is true. I don't know if it will beat Halo, but GT is by far Sony's highest-selling franchise, it's wrong to take it lightly. It might not beat Halo but it will likely trounce everything else. Who knows though, I could be wrong, I'm speaking about past gens. You are putting an exclusive near Modern Warfare 2 sales - that will not happen.
R3FURBISHED
You underestimate the popularity of GT in Europe, I assure you it will happen. GT is like a religion in Europe and the franchise as a whole is a lot more popular than Halo worldwide.

Modern Warfare 2 sold 7 million day one. No exclusive will touch that.It will be the highest selling PS3 exclusive, but I dont see it outselling Reach. Halo has set the bar for exclusives in terms of sales and marketing. Hell the only other shooter that beat it was MW/MW2 and those were multiplats. Halo 3 is what close to 11 million by now, and I expect Reach to sell more then that in the long run.
Certainly on PS2/Xbox, but both Halo 3 and ODST have sold more than Prologue.GT has always sold more than Halo, I don't see why that would change now.
good_sk8er7
I expect the massive change in userbase figures will have atleast a bit of an effect.

Modern Warfare 2 sold 7 million day one. No exclusive will touch that. There is a reason why I didn't put GT5 againt MW2. No. Nor was I aware of anyone having any pirated PS2's. I wasn't aware there was even a market for that. I have heard of Xbox mods and ofcourse 360 mods; even PSP, but I wasn't aware that there was an extensive PS2 pirating market.Certainly on PS2/Xbox, but both Halo 3 and ODST have sold more than Prologue.[QUOTE="good_sk8er7"]

[QUOTE="wolverine4262"]360 has the larger install base....razgriz_101
the install base means didley squat when it comes to flagship games tbh especially ones like GT5 and Halo, as we seen with Halo 3 the 360 im sure had a smaller user base than the PS3 has right now and managed to shift over 10million copies. So that sonny just made your point rather muted.
Also add in the fact GT and Halo ARE system sellers.
doesnt change the fact that a bigger install base could mean more sales.... no point in bringing out the few exceptions to say it doesnt
GT has always sold more than Halo, I don't see why that would change now.
Maybe because ummmm...the amount of PS3s sold aren't even remotely close to the amount of PS2s sold when GT4 was released? and now GT5 has competition on the ps3, NFS, Grid Dirt.... Then there's 360's racers PGR, Forza, Race Pro. then theres as you mentioned there are 1/5 the PS3's sold. I see GT5 selling 5-6 million. and I doubt that anyone that was dying to get GT5 didn't get prologue. less consoles + competition + the wait = less sales than GT3. probably 5-6 million, which is very respectable. People shouldn't expect GT5 to double GT5:P thats irrational especially when your fanbase is 1/5 what it was and when the market is dominated by shooters, honestly Racing sims lost a bit of popularit from 2005 till now. The chances of GT5 breaking 6 million is slim (thats 1 out of every 5 ps3 owners! and lets not mention that many people have more than one console and if they were looking for a racer Forza 3 would be a great alternative). People are over hyping the sales of GT5, it'll sell well but not beyond what I stated. lets try to be rational here.Correction.
It sold 4.7 million units in 1 day.
tonitorsi
I just looked at the source of the 7 million day one sales - and it was VGChartz. :P So that explains why I was so off.
...I could see Reach and GT5 being just short of that.
GT has always sold more than Halo, I don't see why that would change now.

Plus GT has no competition on the PS3 NFS and Grid are arcade racers not sims.the only reason that I think this MIGHT not outsell halo reach(although I think it is going to be very close) is the fact that there have been quite a lot of racing games released latly, racing fans may have already gotten there thirst quenched from titles like FOrza or NFS Shift, it really all depends how large the core GT 5 fanbase still is at this point tbh with you. I know it will definetly sell millions, but I really think it will be nceck and neck with reach.
Gran Turismo only sold 1.18 million on the PSP. Im not saying this has any direct effect on GT5's sales, but I just don't think people should be so sure GT5 will be a sales juggernaut. Anjunaddict
1.18 mils on PSP is great if you consider how much software PSP is moving recently (its dead).

Yeah but for a franchise that is supposedly more popular than Halo (according to the TC), those sales seem a little too low, even on a dying handheld. GT franchise sold alot because of high install base...GT5 wont do 10 mill because you already know why.
Soooo, GT5P sold 4.6 million (not even the best selling game on the PS3) and GT5 will sell more then Halo: Reach (a major Halo release)... I doubt either will sell better then one another but I don't think GT5 will be on top at the end of the year.Shattered007
GT5P doesnt represent real GT games sales like how Halo 3 ODST doesnt represent Halo series sales ==;.

To be honest, i don't even know what my point was.It will all come down to marketing, or more specifically Sony's marketing. Everyone knows what Microsofts's Halo hype juggernaut is all about, but no one reallyknows how much Sony will market GT5. Sony has had great ads lately, but very few of them have been on TV. If they actually invest a lot into it, I could possibly see it happening.
last generation seemed to be flooded with racing games because thats what casuals wanted, and since gt is the biggest name in racing it sold like crazy. this gen however seems to be flooded with fps and casuals just eat em up. thats why i think reach will sell more. i didn't do any research on number of racing games this gen compared to last gen im just going by what i've seen when i go to places like gamestop and best buy, so i could be completely wrong.
i wonder if they are going to have a huge ad campaign again like they did for halo 3. Im sure people will love to see halo reach soda and bookbags. hell microsoft should just shut down an ENTIRE street in NYC again to have a launch party :wink:I doubt it.
As powerful as Microsoft's marketing machine is? Don't underestimate them.
The_Game21x
and what makes you think Sony wont go all out promoting their flagship franchise ? Sony will likely promote GT5 to infinity and beyond considering it's the biggest selling franchise they got, over 50 million sales.I doubt it.
