I mean seriously, why even have it? I know this has been posted before, but people forget what has been said by Microsoft about what exactly it is they paid for:

Link

The entire Grand Theft Auto 4 retail game cost less than the amount of money Microsoft paid to finance and secure DLC for the 360 version.

MS paid $50,000,000...that is no small bit of change.

From their Blogger Breakfast, where people questioned Chris Satchell, Aaron Greenburg, and John Schappert:

GTAIV DLC

  • When MS says exclusive, they mean that no other system can have DLC content for GTAIV
  • It will be bigger than a lot of people think. GTA3 Vice City and San Andreas were basically expansions of GTA3. Think of the DLC that way. We are talking major expansion for GTAIV
  • No price has been discussed yet. It's up to Rockstar on whether or not they will charge for it
  • If successful, DLC may be the new way to deliver GTA expansions Microsoft

The two I have in bold are the reason that the PS3 version is useless. We are talking Vice City and San Andreas-esque content that Microsoft has no pricing plan for right now. Confirmed. Its been said, black and white, as of right now the content is free and its huge.

So why even buy the PS3 version? You won't be getting the GTA4: Vice City, or the GTA4: San Andreas. You might get some side missions, and maybe a few extra cars. If you have the option of getting it for the 360 why wouldn't you? Deep down do you really believe that Microsoft paid $50,000,000 for a few side missions?

Get real, there is no debate as to which version of GTA4 is the best.

That is totally subjective. You dont know how important the DLC will be untill it's released and take two will not release full games as a download only. Ever.

You & Microsoft themselves are over-estimating how many people actually care about this content esp. since not much is even known about it. The main game is eactly the same on both consoles and thats all that matters in the big scheme of things. Hardcore GTA fans will eat up this DLC but I doubt every single casuals will be foaming at the mouth for this and it's coming 4-6 months later with the second pack next year.

Now that I think about it, it's sad with all of that money being thrown around to slightly extend the lenght of a game when it could have gone to such a better cause in the world.

Did you simply read the title and none of the thread? Microsoft paid for Vice City/San Andreas, what gamer in their right mind would pass that up.

True. But the entire project has been paid in full. So unless they want to piss off their customers why would they charge anything but a small fee for it?

Let me ask you this, if Rockstar charges 400 Microsoft points (roughly...$4-$5 I believe) for basically a new GTA with the GTA 4 engine would you be pissed?

I thought the expansion was first described to "add hours of gameplay" which sounded pretty general and within the range of 4 - 6 hours. San Andreas was much more than that so this tc is suggestion that the expansions will be 20+ hours which I doubt.

And Epic said their extra content would be free but the 2nd map pack was delayed cause microsoft basically forced them to charge for it. If Rockstar wanted to release it for free would microsoft really allow that? for 50 million, Im sure Microsoft has some say as to whether or not the content will be released for free of charge.

To say that the PS3 version is useless is ignorant, believe it or not a lot of people don't care for extra content, or even know about it, many people have bought, or will buy a PS3 just for this game.

EDIT: FLOWDEE has brought up some interesting points, custom soundtrack, rumble, achievements and DLC

I must admit I snickered at these ridiculous points because custom soundtrack is such a poor argument, if a PS3 owner really wants his/her own music while playing, they can just turn on the stereo or play their playlists/itunes from their PC, Dual Shock 3 is on the way, plus many people already have it, achievements, for those who actually factor this into their decision when buying a multiplat, trophies are on the way, along with in game XMB.

the only difference is DLC, and that should be argument enough as to why to choose one over the other.

The 360 is definitely the safe bet, guaranteed custom soundtrack, rumble out of the box, achievements and DLC.

It really beats me as to why people with the 360 & PS3 wont get it for the former

You have to read what was said to the media at that breakfast. Microsoft is talking about Vice City/San Andreas sized DLC. Millions of people bought those two evolutions of the GTA3 formula, I expect the exact same thing to happen with this. Especially since Microsoft is planning a full scale ad-campaign surrounding their exclusive DLC.

Whenever someone tries to downplay what an add-on content can do for a game, I point at what expansions do in the PC gaming world. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War would be nothing without Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and soon Soulstorm. How long would Everquest or even World of Warcraft have lasted if things hadn't been added to them?

Good games get more content - we can say "I don't know what that content will be, so it's worthless" - or we can recognize that the PS3 version being a dead-end is bad news for PS3 owners. I mean, that bites - the deal really hurts for them, because one version of GTA IV will be a loved, developer supported, growing, improving world, while another will be one that is essentially "what you get on the disc is almost all you get on the disc".

A modern game is about long term support - especially one that is played online - so while we don't know yet how this will play out, if I owned both platforms, and cared about GTA enough to pay $60 for GTA IV - I'd put my money on the one that I know will get more content. And that, ultimately, is what makes the DLC more significant than it is getting played out to be right now.

How that will affect sales? Who knows - who knows if the average consumer even knows or cares - but the diehard GTA fans? Their vote was bought.

Are you trying to say microsoft isnt generous with their money? First off $50M to microsoft is nothing. Second of all Bill Gates is going to die the great philantropist of all time buddy. Besides, why are you complaining? You own a 360, your getting the best version of the game...

Is this a case of Lems trying to convince themselves that the DLC won't be crap? I've seen a lot of these types of posts lately....getting nervous?

So far all we have is a MS exec saying it's going to be Vice City. Any person who has ANY common sense would know $50 million ISN'T enough. Think about it for a second.....if they are THAT big and it's TWO exclusive content (which to you means two entirely new games), $50 million is NOTHING what they can make if they did put it out on both consoles. This current game will make half a billion dollars at least when it's all said and done for them. If it truely is two games they are going to give through DLC then that's a billion dollars worth of sales for sure.

You think they give a rats ass about $50 million dollars? Wake the hell up people, this is not going to be the size of Vice City or SAn Andreas for christs sake. If it was MS would be paying a hella lot more than $50 million. You are talking about a billion dollars worth of sales. You Lems really make me laugh sometimes (cows make me laugh to but this is pretty delusional to think the DLC will match Vice City/San Andreas)

It's up to Rockstar on whether or not they will charge for it
  • If successful, DLC may be the new way to deliver GTA expansions Microsoft

what I dont get about this statement is that point about vice city and san andreas being expansions of gta3. That is not the case. Those were two sequels, even if they weren't called GTA4 and GTA5. They were NOT expansions, especially since the original gta3 wasn't present in those games. Expansions are like what oblivion had.

So basically microsoft is claiming that it's getting the next sequel to GTA totally exclusive. That is total bs.

But here's the thing, PC expansions are on one platform, the PC. GTAIV is on both the 360 and PS3, and both have good install bases. Do you really think Rockstar will completely shun all the people who buy the PS3 version?

[QUOTE="f50p90"]Well for the first 6 months it will be exactly the same..shadow8585

True...but we wouldnt need it anyway for the first 6 months. 360 owners will revisit the game after 6 months because of this material while those stuck with the inferior version wont be able to

what cow would want to go back after getting MGS4. not to mention without all this download crap ive been able to go back to past gtas but since there is no extra content i cant go back and play this one now?

true. the 360 version is far superior. anyone with a ps3 and 360 should get the 360 version for the EXCLUSIVE downloadable content.

Microsoft paid them to, and it wouldn't be the first time. How many 360 owners got to fight a Brumack in GeoW? None. How many PC owners got to play Halo 2 in playlists populated with hundreds of thousands of other eager gamers? None. The grim relaity is, Rockstar has been bought here for a huge sum of money - Microsoft paid them to support their platform in ways they won't be allowed to support the PS3.

Call it dirty if you want, but MS opened their wallet and pulled out the old "screw you" card on everyone who is not supporting them.

You think they give a rats ass about $50 million dollars? Wake the hell up people, this is not going to be the size of Vice City or SAn Andreas for christs sake. If it was MS would be paying a hella lot more than $50 million.

darthogre

GTA 4 in its entirety (all 100 hours) didn't cost $50,000,000. So yes, I truly believe Take 2 cares about $50,000,000 because it completely recoups their development costs for the game plus some profit.

No, they paid them. Not one analyst in the world will understand it until GTA4: Vice City (or its equal) comes to XBL.

You know what!! Than why have the 360 version of GTA4??? It's pointless!! The PC version will be far better than that!!

So why would you buy the 360 version??? For that DLC??? ha!! the PC version will have mods. So many improovements and much better graphics!!!!

So what is your argument again?

yeah that paid for it to be made, but they have to pay MS back that 50mil. which is what was said when this news first come out, so if thats the case then they WILL charge for the DLC

Gears on PC was released a year after it's 360 counterpart. Halo 2 over two years after its Xbox counterpart. GTA IV will be released the same day on both consoles.

Both will sell, and while Rockstar will release DLC 3 months after release for the 360 version, I can bet they won't just ignore the PS3 owners... money is to be made, and DLC on 2 consoles is better than DLC on one.
