A lot of people are complaining that Nintendo caters way to much for the kids market. Although it is not true, and in reality they are trying to do the opposite, I understand why people will say that.

I mean, who else will do a Happy Meal to promote their newest Mario Kart?

And Nintendo has risen a miscomptention to people who don't play games to think that gaming is for kids.

But contrary to these photos, the reality is far more disturbing and far more horrible. Kids are not playing Mario anymore. Kids are not playing Zelda anymore. Kids aren't even playing Sonic anymore (although that is understandable).

Kids today are way too "self-consious" to play something like that. All they want to play is the "mature" games. Games that adults "supposedly" play.

Enter Grand Theft Auto. Thanks to Sony's PlayStation 2, a whole new generation of kids have access to very violent games. The most popular of them is the landmark GTA series.

This literally is what kids are playing these days. Just go to a game store or your local Wal*Mart. Besides GBA games, the games that parents are buying for their kids is GTA. GTA games sold best at Wal*Mart. And don't say that it's the parents that are playing the game, it was the kids who pointed it out to them. Those parents know absolutely nothing about games.

I even stopped one of them from buying the game by asking them what the game was about. After explaining, they quickly left the game and punished their 8-9 year old son. Unbelievable.

Only kids are the one who want to look mature playing games. Real mature gamers don't care how colorfull the game is. They care how good the game is.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. A true mature game.

So if you diss a game just because it looks kiddy, you may want to take that back. Because only kids will think that is for kids.

I mainly use GTA as a Flying game.

I almost never kill people with guns.

too busy up in the air blasting Music.

I don't blame the kids for wanting tp play games like GTA

when I was that age all I played was Mortal Kombat, RE2, MGS1, and a slew of violence fun games.

and guess what I never hurt or killed anyone or stole anything,

In fact I volunteer at a local old folks home providing them Hot meals.

Jesus christ you people still don't get it. Sigh. We aren't talking about one or two games, were talking about everything. Nintendo's entire self image, their marketing image, everything, especially on the Wii leads to kids. Look at their current games, their upcoming games, their adds, their website, Princess Peach's message, etc. It couldn't be any more obvious that this system is not intended as much for the hardcore crowd as it is for the casual, family friendly crowd.

Since when does targeting matter?

Mario is targeted to kids. Are kids playing it? No.

GTA is targeted at adults? Are adults palyig them? Most adults don't even play games.

The Macinstosh is targeted at home use. Aree people using it for home use? No. They are using them for businesses.

Tragic, but yes. Targeting sucks.

GTA isn't for kids, but it appeals to them. It isn't really the companies fault if a kid on the internet hears about how awesome GTA is and asks his unknowing parent to get it. The major issue is the lack of awareness among the parents who buy their kids these games. An M rating on a videogame can and cannot be like the R rating on a movie, so for a parent i would imagine it can be tough

GTA isn't designed for kids, just becuase they buy it, doesn't make it a kiddy game. Nintendo's target demographic is still children despite what you say.

Who cares who plays it, you say GTA is for kids, buts its not, its for 18+ just like the box says.

I would think a lot of people would care if the VAST MAJORITY of players who buy GTA, aren't even old enough to play it legally.

And so what if the box says that? You can't trust boxes. The back of the box for the PS2 said the PS2 was the most powerfull of all it's competitors. The Gamecube was over twice as fast as the PS2. And the Xbox even more so.

The back of the box for Windows says it is the most reliable operiting system ever created. Windows has over 90% of computer viruses ever created.

Boxes. Boxes. They are just marketing. When kids read that 18+ sign, they will say "Oh, that game must be good!".

You know what? No one used to think that games could lead kids to become violent. In fact, playing violent games as a kid used to be fine, there was never a fear that these games could teach kids to kill. In fact, this fear shouldn't even exist today, even with all the realism in games. The fact is, the world is causing this. People like Jack Thomspon try to make the games seem a hell of a lot more serious than they are supposed to be. Thanks to a handful of kids, maybe 0.0000001% who killed or committed violent acts thanks to video games, is now causing much unneeded fear in these video games. I'm not saying 10 year olds should be playing Quake 4 or Postal, but hell i know a lot of people who used to play violent games such as GTA and Resident Evil and many many more violent games as small kids and they grew up fine. If parents allow toy guns for their kids and those little guns that shoot powder, i don't see how that is acceptable but some of these video games aren't. Maybe i'm looking at this wrong, i don't know.

actually the PS2 box doesn't say that on the back. And my dad just bough vista and i'm pretty sure it doesn't say "most reliable" on the back. I can go check if you need me too. However, the back of the GTA box does say "mature 17+" and that is who the games is made for.

Who are you to decide what som1 else plays? I completley disagree with you. And Zelda is not a mature game, its about a elf who tries to save a princess, i think a game wer you have guns and kill peopel is alot more mature, thats why its rated M.
And a game isnt kiddy because of who plays it, its because of what you do in the game, how it looks, characters etc..

If i wer to compare

to

Mario is the kiddy game.

While slightly immoral (well, by somes moral standards) I don't think it really matters. Do you not think that the burden of child raising should lay solely on the parents shoulders? So if something unsavory happens in a game, and a kid is genuinely confused as to whether or not this is a good way to go about life (where at that point I feel it has little to do with the game itself, but a pre-disposed inclination to participate in certain... activities) then it really is up to a parent to properly tell their child what is morally correct. Not just pointing out why a certain game is wrong, that isn't going to help anyone. But by explaining to the child as he/she grows why certain activities are not considered moral - or better yet, legal. This gives the child the tools required to make their own moral decisions as they grow.

Seriously - I genuinely doubt that games like GTA encourage children to COMMIT GTA.

Of course this is gonna gather more attention since it's kids playing GTA, a 17+ game. Why would there be an article for kids playing Mario? It couldn't be any more obvious that a lot already do, why would they need an article stating that. Oh and as people mentioned, it's not only the people who play it, it's the game itself.

if mario started causing deaths, or if people started blaming mario for shooting schools and cops, then mario would be in the news

post a link with the number of kids playing gta to mario

post a link or your thread is null and void

they're waaaay more versions of mario games out there than GTA so you are probably wrong

News story on the amout of kids playing GTA

I couldn't find a single article about kids playing Mario, so that is why I made this thread.

OMG your an idiot it's because people EXPECT kids to play a KIDDY game liek Mario, le retard

I know, I would EXPECT too.

But EXPECTING doesn't mean it will happen. It never does.

GTA is a game targeted for teens and adults... It's not their fault if kids want to play

Mario is targeted directly for kids

you lost

ALCATRAZZ3

Since when does targeting matter?

Mario is targeted to kids. Are kids playing it? No.

GTA is targeted at adults? Are adults palyig them? Most adults don't even play games.

The Macinstosh is targeted at home use. Aree people using it for home use? No. They are using them for businesses.

Tragic, but yes. Targeting sucks.

you don't use your head do you? that's because the news reports negative things. kids playing GTA is suppose to be negative. The news doesn't report kids playing mario because they're suppose to play mario so you pretty much owned yourself and backed up everyones argument with that post

if mario started causing deaths, or if people started blaming mario for shooting schools and cops, then mario would be in the news

Yeah, they are SUPPOSED to play mario? Are they? The jury is still out.

The fact you have to be 18+ to buy a GTA game makes your argument void.PS3OwnsYou

You know there are easy ways around that.

That doesnt stop kids from playing it.

so?

kids play everything so what's your point?

My point is that more kids play GTA or halo than Mario.

EVERYBODY is playing GTA and Halo more than Mario. not just kids.

And who do you think is playing those games the most out of everybody?

It sure ain't Oompa Loompas

actaully the average gamer's age is 33. So you're wrong LINK

lmao@ the average gamer being 33

so that means that gamers run anywhere if you want to guess from 5 to 62?

I don't care what that link says.. the average gamer is NOT 33 years old

gamer's under the age of 18 only make up 31% of the market, everyone else is older than that.

Hahahahahah, oh man. If I had a nickle for every time i've seen these statements proven.

1) Two children of around 7 years old begging their grandmother to buy them San Andreas.

2) One kid's parent buying some kind of shootan game for them. The Gamestop clerk even warned the parent that the game was Rated M for violence and bad language, and the parent paid without skipping a beat.

3) This one little kid that used to live across the street from us got Vice City from his parents. No clue as to what they knew they were buying for him.

To be honest I feel sorry for the adults who don't know what they are buying their children. And I raise an eyebrow to those that actually do.

Yea, it's quite idiotic how the world operates. One person is all it takes. One person kills someone because of influence from a game and the whole world goes crazy, news stories everywhere about the dangers of video games to kids and how it should be stopped. What's stupid is that this widespread panic is unnecessary. This is what causes more kids to become violent. It's all these damn news stories making everything seem a lot worse than it is. Then people become way too affected by something stupid and minor like this.

So you are saying that kids shouldnt get to choose what game they want to play? They must play Mario and Nintendo games and wait until they are 18 to play Mature games?

Are you related to Jack Thompson in any way? GarchomPro

I'm his cousin. but that doesn't matter now.

What matters is what kids are doing. Are you going to let a kid watch an R-rated movie? Or even an NC-17 movie? What kind of parent would do that?

So what kind of parent would let their kids play an M-rated/18+ game? They are the same thing.

I know, but parents don't know what they are buying. They don't know nothing about the game industry at all.

What's the point of this topic :| Seriously. An attempt to make Wii "not kiddy"? Why are you telling everyone what everyone already knows. It's not like underage kids playing violent games is new.

Oh no they won't. They will all go off and kill everyone in sight. Cause, you know, so many kids have already done that because of video games. Oh wait :|
