So your saying its just a coincidence that the types of games that get the most complaints about optimization are sandbox style?

Its not that this style of game is more demanding its just that sandbox game devs are lazy or rush their product?

HL2 is hailed by many as being so well optimized. Its got the smallest levels I've ever seen in a game. Just a coincidence right?

Rockstar has more money to throw into GTA4 than the devs of the games I mentioned combined. Why cant they get the gameworld running well with Gears of War level graphics?

The main complaints with those games are about framerates actually.

They're running into memory limitations, since the consoles have such small memory allocations (in this case, the sacrifice is noted but inevitable--you either have Gears-quality graphics and small levels/draw distance, or you have...this). But you don't usually have that problem with the PC (which is where I'm pointing the Oblivion problem). PCs can exploit faster hard drives and more memory. IIRC, there are Oblivion mods that address the load-time issue, which shows Bethesda perhaps left a few things hanging.

Your saying a sandbox game wont be any more demanding than a linear fps if you have enough memory?

Explain why pc Oblivion has 2-3 times higher framerate in houses and dungeons than outdoors.

I doubt that mod eliminates the loads just probably reduces the time.

Look at Morrowind. You didnt load cities. Even the highest end pc's back then had very low fps in Caldera and other cities. Imagine the same amount of npc's, throw in about 4 vehicles on display at any time and the ability to move through at 60mph and no pc could handle it.
