How do people hate this game? i love it...its addictive fun, realistic and Niko's a much more loveable character. I can spend all day just going around pulling stunts and shooting random people with a rocket launcher.
people need to lower there standards, technically theres no game out like it, its visually impressive (360 version atleast) and just fun.

I think it's because GTA IV went realistic. From what I played of the last games (I only fully played Vice City), it felt more slapstick and tongue-in-cheek, like a watered down version of Saint's Row 2. Personally, I love GTA IV. I think it's worthy of most, if not all of its praise, and the only things that I think are a real bother is the targeting system. Apparently it's lots better than the GTA III trilogy, so I guess I'm glad they fixed it because even so it makes me fail missions sometimes.
But apart from that, it's great. The last time I "played" GTA IV I got sidetracked and spent over an hour just surfing the internet in the game looking at all the parodies. It's also amazing how they use the internet, TV, radio etc to make the world feel alive and respond to your actions. The attention to detail in the city is definitely second to none. Every nook and cranny has been carefully added just to make the entire city look nice.
I think you're right that people need to lower their standards. Seriously, everything's a let down nowadays for some strange reason. Halo 3, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 4 (to those few people out there), Assassin's Creed, and for the future we've got Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts and Fallout 3 on "failure" lockdown. It's just incredibly pathetic. Most if not all those games delivered fantastic experiences worthy of their predecessors and then some, though I can see why people dislike Assassin's Creed. Nevertheless, that game could not have been done last gen.
I feel the only real let down has been Mass Effect. With a fake conversation system, the ability to go full paragon and renegade, and a derivative plot, the game that was suppose to be Bioware's triumph free from any restrictions from a license turned out to be a turd. It's enjoyable, sure, but it actually took a step back in all aspects (save graphics) from its predecessors.

god, you just summed up exactly how i feel...do i know you? LOL....kidding.
seriously, tho...the game did what it did and it kept that GTAIV feeling, IMO yes its more realistic, but how is that bad? I went back to playing the previous ones and i just can't after GTAIV, they feels clunky and unbalanced (hard to explain) maybe due to the animation system of GTAIV, just so satisfying and much more better, which really, really adds to the fun and replay value.
I can't count how many times i got side tracked during a mission, just to step out of a car and cause choas and send niko flying out of mid-air during a stunt, just to see him react LOL. lets not forget about online multiplayer. the overall package, GTAIV delivered on, it managed to make everything well balanced.

I think a major problem is GTA IV has a whole lot of nothing.Things like the amazing additions of usable computers, TV, and huge amounts of mini-games ect. are great additions that add so much to the game world... However aside from that Rockstar seemed completely sidetracked on the central game design variety, that kept previous 3D GTAs so great.
Everything was there to make it a stellar game that destroyed its predecessors, however it missed the mark in utilising it. Re-using similar drive to - attack - finish scenarios, predictable and repetitive mission structure, no flexibility in player approach - and honestly aside from doing the main story, there isnt much more to do in the game that feels meaningful at all. The only really meaningful 'side' things you could do were 'friend' tasks - which were essentially a chore that lacked any fun factor.
In San Andreas side tasks felt like they could enhance your progression - even things like the schools - unlocking a hunter helicopter and whatnot could help with certain missions, or getting about, or doing other tasks to up your skill levels to improve your abilities. They were also fun and rewarding.
Mission progression was varied. You would go from burning Weed fields with a flamethrower, to chasing trucks interstate, and there was, quite simply - so much fun stuff to do.
And the game world was both believable and fun to navigate, however it still had that 'over the top' feel too it. I think the much more real feel of GTA IV impacted on the over the top humor. It was like an awkward contrast.
Problem is GTA IV fixed so many things about the previous GTAs... hell the combat was actually really good... but as I said, it just missed the point in the process.

Well, I'm just going to lay it down, because I'm not in the mood for a huge debate. So basically, take it or leave it.
As you know my game tastes are weird, and my interests aren't really in games that do it right. I think Assassin's Creed is amazing, yet it doesn't qualify for a very good traditional game. Uru Live: Myst Online, is not a traditional MMO, and it even does online puzzle solving in a weird way, but it's a different, non-linear experience that goes nowhere, and I like it. You know I like Bungie's level design philosophy, and it's the polar opposite way any good designer would teach you at school. Likewise, I like GTA IV for chucking me into a world where a lot goes on, but doesn't mean it has to culminate in the core gameplay. It reminds me of a screensaver that doubled as an interactive experience, where you could talk to characters and do things but it just didn't do a whole lot. Shoot me for standing in the middle of the Triangle and watching Liberty City come to life for half an hour -- I quite like it.
Remember how you once said fun was subjective? Bam. Karma bites. I don't personally believe that, but I don't do friend 'chores' for the sake of it being in the game. I genuinely like seeing how Niko bonds with others; it's also about the only time my Mrs. and my sister come together to discuss a video game, and personally I think it's great how the dates have a personality all of their own. Also cool how if you mess up, they can find out you're cheating on them. Gameplay wise they give you an extra edge (Carmen's health boost saved me a lot of times), but really, who gives a **** about that. A mate also said Little Jacob can make you feel a bit guilty if you neglect him throughout the game up until the end. Point taken, he's my bum boy now. LJ can act as a weapon's cache? Screw that, apparently Badman's having a rough time. Let the soap unfold, because I quite like it.
I've never had any problems with the presentation of the story as you've said, and I haven't heard any complaints about it either. I'm satisfied with it so far, and unless the pigs fly to Brazil in the end, I'm quite liking it.
I don't think R* missed the point. I think they purposefully changed it. It finally fits my taste as being a quirky but really good game . Quite frankly people can flock to Saint's Row 2 if they so wish, but not me. The last GTA game I'll play as a regular gamer was an experience indeed, and yep, I quite like it.
I don't understand how people see GTA 4 as a disappointment when there's also *drumroll* spore. Some years ago, spore was all over the forums being "the clear GOTY" and maybe even "revolutionary" and now it launches, and it turns out to be 4 small games linked together that aren't that great. Spore got at least as much hype as GTA 4, and look how the games are now.
Aside from that, GTA 4 was great, but somehow people expected a miracle on a disk. If you think GTA 4 is boring, or it doesn't deserve AAA, you either really dislike sandbox games, or you got to lower your standards.

Nobody expected a miracle on a disc. What i expected was fun, and GTAIV lacks it. The missions send you off on run of the mill third person shoot 'em ups far too often, and the game's classic slapstick madness has been replaced by gritty realism which renders it dull and lifeless, especially after finishing the story. I played Vice City for years, but GTAIV completely lost my interest after just a few weeks.
True it is fascinating watching the world move around you - games like Stronghold or The Settlers, where you watch a town go about its business, in all the details, the world reacting on its own.Well, I'm just going to lay it down, because I'm not in the mood for a huge debate. So basically, take it or leave it.

I was just pointing out the games faults - which why many people here seem to hold such a grudge against it, of course I can understand why you appreciate it (and by no means is it not a great game).
The friends things was great - seeing how Niko bonds with other characters. However it wears off and becomes a chore because of its repetitive nature. How many times does Roman want to see "american teetees" how many times does *insert character* want to go bowling, or to a restaurant. Due to the poor design nature of this, the emotional impact is lost more and more you do these tasks - they dont become meaningful at all anymore. Wihch is a pity, because I really liked listening to what the characters had to say about themselves - which eventually turned to 'shutup I just want to get this over with'.
Again, storytelling techniques, acting, and the details, and technicals is all sublime in GTA IV, I cant cant disagree. I simply think that Rockstar missed the mark game design wise in quite a few ways, which results in things effecting one and other.
I think too much effort was put into the above, to make a better experience - that was unparalleled in a game, without thinking about the core game design enough.
Heh, I couldn't even finish the game.. kept getting bored everytime. I have no clue how this got 10s across the board, but whatever.Espada12Alot of the time its the surrounding hype, media fanfare (that can be more often than not fueled by marketing), and the reviewers on anticipation.

I had this same excitement but after a few hours man, I don't know I just felt like it was grinding rep in world of warcraft(this is not a good thing) and I just kept using cheats and blowing up the city to entertain myself but that only kept my interest for so long..Haven't touched the game in a while.
gta4 was definitely a disappointment to me
it just doesnt have enough fun stuff to do. Rip on San Andreas all you want but its clearly the funnest one of the series. I havent traded my copy yet only because I'm waiting to see how the DLC is going to be like.
No, that award goes to MGS4, SSBB, and Haze.BioShockOwnzlol, no.:| The only disappointing game in there is Haze.
Considering its hype, yes, GTAIV was a disappointment. The fun factor was gone. Turning GTAIV into a more realistic experience ruined this game, imo.

You're putting SSBB and MSG4 in the same category as Haze?
Not in the same rating category, but yes... they were all disappointments.
I can't understand how you can say that MGS4 was a dissapointment bro, but hey, everone has their opinion.

Pretty much the same here, im still yet to finsish it. I got sick of the repedative mob missions, going from A to B killing the same goons in various unininteresting locations, and I ended up ignoring 'friends' as it seemed to be just an optional chore to pad the gametime (despite its qualities). Played online a bit too, but it was a few days of fun, nothing there longevity wise.I'm honest with myself: GTA4 is one of the most fun games I've played this generation. I'd hardly call it a disappointment.Skittles_McGee
Did you play Vice City and San Andreas? Compare those two to GTA IV in terms of sheer fun, and you'll understand why some people didn't like GTA IV.

I've played every GTA since the very first few games on the PS1 (all three of them), including LCS and VCS on the PSP. I loved GTA4, and I do not understand why people don't like GTA4.Please Log In to post.
