I'm sure there are many people who prefer Halo to PC FPS games. It all comes down to preference.

I know I personally like Timesplitters, a console FPS, more than any other FPS. I know people would laugh at that cause they think their Counterstrike or whatever is better, but it doesn't matter.

Point: Halo being inferior for you doesn't mean it's inferior for everyone else.

Agreed, couldnt have said it better myself.

I've been a big PC gamer for years and i've played Counter Strike before pre version 1.0 and i've played CS:S, Day of Defeat,HL2, UT2004, BF2 and well just about every PC FPS you can think of... And yet I still love all the Halo games.

Why do we Hermits not care? It's because we have titles like these

Crysis

Unreal Tournament 3

Gears of War

Call of Duty 4

I know you guys will say but those are on consoles, but the PC's versions usually have the best graphics, best online and mods.

Halo doesn't score or sell well on PC because its below average when you compare them to other PC games.

PSTriple4life

Using your own list of games why should Lemmings care about Crysis when hey have all the other games on your list.

If your gaming on pc then yeah halo means almost nothing there are better games to play and by the time halo 3 comes it will be old. I like most hermits also game on console so halo has some meaning to me it's no tf2 but it's a good game just not great.

Halo scored AAA on PC, which is excellent. Halo 2 had a lower score because it was released 3 years late and its ganerally a bad port.

My point being, Halo games are great FPS's, and to some people like me, are far more fun than PC FPS's.

Of course not. Consoles can never be as intimate as PCs. I too thought Halo 3 was a 8.5 at best, in my book, if compared across games on all platforms including the PC. Pretty much, the only reason that Halo 3 did so well is because it won the title in taking the most PC FPS concepts, in any console game ever.

Halo CE was a great game. I enjoyed it tremendously on the PC. It was definately better than playing it on Xbox. I couldn't get into Halo 2 on theXbox and I am disappointed with Microsoft for making it necessary to have Vista to play Halo 2 considering it has no DX10 in it. I guess that ploy from Microsoft (requiring Vista) really backfired. How many version of Halo 2 PC did they sell, 3?

GazzaB

Can someone explain to me the differences between a "PC" FPS and a "console" FPS?

Other than a couple of technical limitations on consoles (which ultimitely makes PC a much better platform for FPS games), the genre is the same for both platforms.

PC FPS, or PC games in general, are usually more complex. Deus Ex vs Invisible War would be a good example.

Graphics aside, Console FPSs tend to be 5+ years behind PC FPSs. Essentially every "new" feature Console FPSs toute, are ones that had been established long before on the PC.

InsaneBasura

Deus Ex Invisible War was atrocious. I played it for about 15 minutes and was completely disgusted. But I think that is the developers fault.

For example, complexity in FPS games is kind of an oxymoron. Are FEAR, Far Cry, Doom 3, Quake 4, etc complex? No. Technically they are, but gameplay depth-wise no.

Consoles definately have technical limitations and therefore to me, they are useless as a gaming device. But I still think that overall, an FPS is an FPS. Hardware superiority on the PC allow FPS's to be better because of better res, input device, draw distance and level size as well as moding community.

I feel Halo CE was a great game. Much better on the PC despite being almost the same game on Xbox.

you're right in saying that most pc gamers could care less, but why can't (just once) someone asknowledge that, just maybe, halo is just as good as though games? there always has to be a superiority contest. granted, doesn't help when halo fanboys act dumb, but still

So, PSTriple4Life, have you come up with a PC exclusive FPS from the past 12 months that has a higher Gamerankings average than Halo 3 yet?

If not, then just /thread.

No, seriously come on, this is a challenge from me to you.

Where the facts to back up all the PC FPS superiority crap you're spewing?

jethrovegas

While I don't agree with PSTriple4 Life, your test isn't a good one. Just because a PC FPS has scored lower than Halo 3 on GameRankings doesn't mean it's worse.

For example, many sites like GameSpot rate consoles and PCs on different criteria basis. When they do that, PC games inevitably get graded lower, as there is a much, much larger library and so much more expected with the hardware. It's why Oblivion on the 360 has a higher score than the PC version despite being worse in every way.

Secondly, the PC being an open platform just does not have the official, special interest sites and magazines like the Playstation, Nitendo and Xbox brands do that inflate their scores (seriously, Lair raises itself several points above where it belongs on GameRankings because some Playstation sites give it 9s).

So, if that's not alright, what evidence is there? My answer would be something along the lines of visuals, a better multiplayer experience, gameplay which is more developed (Halo 3 is essentially Halo CE with tweaks) and the ability to completely customize the software.

All that said, the TC is wrong. Halo does mean something to me, it's an accomplished FPS which I do enjoy.

I was one of the few hermits that was hoping for Halo 3 to be good. I preordered the Limited Edition copy and when I played it I was unimpressed. I played it for about 2-3 hours and for about the last hour and a half I was forcing myself to continue. I was just waiting for something special to happen. It never did. I gave the game to my brother and even he had trouble being interested enough to finish the game. He just finished the game like 3 days ago. He told me it was hard for him to spend more than 30 minutes at a time playing the game because it would get so boring. Funny how I can play HL2, Ep1, Ep2 and actually have to make sure a clock is visible to me so that I don't play for too long and with Halo games I can't wait to stop playing. I was actually excited to get in and start playing Halo 3 too, but the game just could not keep me interested. Hell the demo for Timeshift kept me more intrigued than Halo 3 did. BTW that is bad because Timeshift is such a subpar clunky FPS.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Omgz that made my day...

You enjoy running around doing bunny jumps, using hardly any tactics to take down your enemies, having your hand held throughout the whole game, it's shorter campaign, it's annoying (full of kids!) community etc.

I'll be off playing Half Life 2, with it's realistic gameplay, tactical gameplay to take down enemies, having to use my brain to get through the game, it's decent sized compaign. Has no multiplayer, though. But HAlf Life 2: Deathmatch was the **** :P

Btw, I do like Halo 3 lol

Funny because that's exactly how I felt playing Half Life (1) for the first time. I was a year and a half late to the party and I had to force myself through it the first time. Later on I've completed it numerous times, and right now it's one of my favorite fps's. I blame all the hype I heard before playing it.

Bioshock was exactly the same to me as well, after the initial 4 or 5 hours. But that was because of the stupid death mechanism. What's the point of making out intricate plans if you know you can win any fight simply by "dying" over and over again? In System Shock 2 you actually had to use your brain to survive, in Bioshock you simply had to have enough patience. It was still a great game, if only because of the phenomenal art style and atmosphere, but the gameplay was simply boring IMO.

It was set to be on PC from day one. It was going to be a vastly different game...a better game. Once Microsoft got involved the game was stripped of everything that was going to make it good on PC. Funny thing is that it was still "good" on Xbox because there was literally nothing like it. Point is that if Halo had never been on consoles and stayed PC exclusive I am confident it would be a completely different, but better game with multiplayer that is MUCH better than what it is currently. I followed the Halo development very closely until Microsoft bought Bungie. Once that happened I knew things would never be the same.

Console gamers will never play Crysis. This is confirmed by Crytek. They said that the engine might be a possibility, but due to memory issues Crysis will never show its face on any current gen console.

You enjoy running around doing bunny jumps, using hardly any tactics to take down your enemies

Sakura321

I assume you played it on normal or heroic? On legendary (which is the difficulty everyone should be playing on anyway) it's so much more tactical than Half Life 2. Even hard in Half Life 2 simply requires good aim and understanding on which weapons to use in which situations, while halo on legendary is closer to a fps equivalent of Ninja Gaiden. Every single elite is a huge obstacle, and the zealots (gold plated ones) are tougher than many bosses in other games. Complete mastery of all the weapons (they ALL have their uses), the melee and grenade systems is required if you want to stand a chance.

And I do love Half Life 2.

So what you are saying is that if I get my copy of Halo 3 back from my brother and I play it on Legendary it will turn into a fun game and I will want to keep on playing it until I beat it?

@ TC:

How come you start a thread trying to speak for an entire group, and when members of that group tell you that you are indeed not speaking for them, you tell them that they are the ones in the wrong?

Its rather arrogant, and more than a little self-serving.

Koalakommander

We all know this, you are giving Hermits a bad name. You should be above this mindless bragging.

Well put.

Exactly what I was thinking.

No, the game might just not be for you. I simply argued against his statement that Half Life 2 would be more tactical.

Jesus here we go again.

"you need to play it on Legendary to experience it".
Biggest bull**** EVER. You simply take damage easier, and Covenant are more accurate. It doesent make the experience any better, just harder. And for the record ive beaten the game on heroic, and 1/2 on Legendary - SP - not Co-op.

And no Half Life is even more tactical in many instances - and the fast pace of the game, forces the player to think on their feet more. Hell the Grav Gun is a pure example of how diverse tactically the game can be.

People love to interpreate Halo as 'tactical' because of the weapon limitations, and slow pace. While the weapon limitations force you to make tactical decisions - it hardly makes the game 'oh so tactical', and the pace - ha.

Jeez Hunters in HL2 Ep2. Most tactical enimies - and tactics needed to defeat - in any linear FPS. They make the Covenant look like mindless drones.

And comparing Halo to Ninja Gaiden is laughable. Ninja Gaiden is quick frantic action, Halo is slow paced FPS combat.
And no to stand a chance, the best option is to stay back and shoot from cover - letting your shield regen when it takes hits. You draw enimies out (they are pretty pathetic when it comes to tactics at long range - and exploit it) and take them down. Easy as said and done.

edit*

Oh and:

"Even hard in Half Life 2 simply requires good aim and understanding on which weapons to use in which situations"
on Halo: "Complete mastery of all the weapons (they ALL have their uses)"

Oh god, the Irony.
Double standards i say.

PC FPS, or PC games in general, are usually more complex. Deus Ex vs Invisible War would be a good example.

Subcritical

Deus Ex Invisible War was atrocious. I played it for about 15 minutes and was completely disgusted. But I think that is the developers fault.

For example, complexity in FPS games is kind of an oxymoron. Are FEAR, Far Cry, Doom 3, Quake 4, etc complex? No. Technically they are, but gameplay depth-wise no.

Actually if you want an example, look at the difference of System Shock 2 and Bioshock.

Or Rainbow 6 Raven Shield, and Lockdown and Vegas.
