Halo Series Reaches 65 Million Units Sold

What a juggernaut.

I know it's not entirely fair to compare (because different genres and the fact Halo had 6 year of a headstart) them but the biggest active flagship Sony franchise* is currently at:

Uncharted Series Reaches 21 Million Units Sold

The question is: are these sales deserved in your opinion?

I can admit Halo sometimes gets too much of benefit of the doubt when it comes to Metacritic scores, but overall I've found the series to be consistently very good. I even enjoyed Halo 4 and didn't notice what the fuss was all about, actually.

Anyway, I think this is the only blockbuster type of a FPS that is kind of commercialized and always sells well - that I enjoy. I cannot say the same for Call of Duty or Battlefield.

That means, Halo gets something right, at least in my opinion. The game is accessible, has a wide appeal, however, I also think it requires a surprising amount of skill to play it on Legendary or to succeed in multiplayer.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Can Halo 5 make it 70 million this year?

* of course it's not the biggest LTD franchise in their catalogue, but definitely their bigger seller nowadays and the game that still gets sequels in more or less equal intervals

Excellent sales for a great series.

Sony's juggernaut franchise is Gran Turismo though.

GT is still Sony's biggest flagship franchise bro. And the last count (before GT6 released) was ~70 million units.

Gran Turismo 6 (GT6), the latest installment to the wildly popular Gran Turismo franchise that has sold more than 70 million copies worldwide*5

*5 – As of the end of March, 2013

--------

In any case, good news! Hopefully these numbers will encourage MS to give (and keep on giving) 343i the time (essentially this above all else) and budget to make the game as good as they can!

I didn't chose it to compare because each installment comes out in a veeeeeeeeeeery long time and is on decline.

Anyway, yeah. It has sold 70,02 m copies to date:

http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html

However, 4.2m worth of sold units comes from PSP version (whereas MS doesn't have a handheld equivalent), so that'd be 66m on home consoles. Besides, it's worth noting that about 8.4m worth of sold units comes from Prologue-type games, essentially demos.

However, there aren't any numbers for GT6 there, however from various sources, it could be gathered it has sold around 3 million. That's 73.2m then.

Still, if you count on game-by-game-basis and take into consideration that GS had been around 4 years more than Halo, that's impressive achievement by Halo.

Well deserved.

I'd say its almost certain to hit 70 million this year with continued MCC sales and Halo 5.

So? MCC, Halo Wars, ODST are included in Halo's numbers. Remasters and spin-offs count as much as the main games when talking about the overall franchise.

Plus, when you can sell 5 million units of a $30 demo, why the hell wouldn't you? lol

Just to let you know. I didn't think Sony didn't have anything that sold more than 21m. I hope you hadn't even thought that for a millisecond, ok? I just used current "franchise power" arbitrarily, because Uncharted is tenfold hotter franchise than Gran Turismo is now, and an epitome of PlayStation blockbuster, just like Halo is for MS.

And if 343 didn't take over and kill (or severely injure) the Halo name think about where it could be... Imagine if the Xbone could handle running the game at resolutions above 1152X810.

LCE day one but skeptical

I'm sure a lot of people worked hard on these games but they're just a perfect example of an average franchise. By no means bad but mediocre, run of the mill sort of way.

@Desmonic: Being fair here, GT started in the ps1 era. It has a full gen ahead of Halo, though, Halo does have a more accelerated pace in terms of releases.

Still, it was at 60M less than a year ago. Pretty impressive.

Not surprising at all, MS put so much resources into this franchise and being a system seller for the Xbox and Xbox 360 you knew the sales numbers overall would be huge. I'm surprised of the fact that it seems like more than half the install base of the Xbox One bought MCC though, didn't think a remastered collection of a game would sell so much but hopefully 343 learned from the multiplayer mistakes of MCC and will delivery a great online game for Halo 5.

Same for Halo compared to Uncharted.

The comparisen has to be with Ratchet or Kilzone as they are the only games that have the same gen lenght.

It's a 1up from Sony , so it matters this time.

There are so many other franchises that have surpassed that its kind of sad he tries to boast about it.

And didn't char make a thread about this last month?

It's a shame 343 took the mantle, the sales would be much higher. Gran Turismo is Sony's Sales beast if doing a comparison and it surpassed 70 million back in March 2013. Where's Nintendo's representation?

I'm not into sales and I own more Halo games than Gran Turismo games because I don't like racing, but comparing a relatively new IP like Uncharted as "Sales Juggernaut" doesn't make sense when Sony has their own "Sales Juggernaut" GT to compare with Halo.

I see they are counting every spinoff for Halo, which is understandable and Halo franchise has almost been an annual series when looking at the release dates the last 8 years. It helps that M$ puts a COLOSSAL amount of revenue towards marketing the hell out of each and every Halo (marketing money that could have helped finance other IPs). Would people rather have more games in various genres with less marketing or less games in less genres but these games have excellent marketing exposure? Because we are getting the latter with M$ and Halo.

You forgot Halo Anniversary for 360, Halo: Spartan Assault, and Halo: Spartan Strike. Clearly, along with ODST, Halo Wars, and MCC they are looking at the total series. If the TC is going to count EVERY game under the sun for Halo even the sketchy games above, he really should not worry about including a single PSP game. Especially since M$ has released far more Halo games, is counting spinoffs, and especially since M$ ported some of their Halo games to smartphones and PCs as well which means even more sales on a new platform.

However, I agree with your point. This thread was designed to talk about "Sales Juggernauts", so all is fair.

All I know is that I absolutely hated my time with the Master Chief Collection so I'm sad to be a part of this 65 million count, congrats for the Halo fans though.

Also why compare a series with 11 games currently released to a game with 4 games (1 of which is on the most underrated handheld yet)?

EDIT: forgot about that shitty card game, 5 Uncharteds

And still the worst level design of any shooter out there.

The Silent Cartographer is one of my favorite maps of all time

Mine as well, I'd have to put Assault on the Control Room up there with it though.

Yeah, also a great map

I dunno what this map was called but in Halo Reach there was a map that had several floors and I think it had a teleporter placed around it, loved that one.

65M and Halo 5 looks like Halo 4 and runs at 810p? Shame on 343i.

makes sense, I don't know why one would bother getting an Xbox and not get Halo, kind of surprised it hasn't sold more
