I'm too young to enjoy Ultimafunsohng
While it may be hard to acquire the tastes nowdays to enjoy these old ultima games you can still end up enjoying them. It may take time getting used to the archaic mechanics and convulted controls however. I am 20 years old and only played them recently, but I enjoyed them nonetheless.
No FF7? Or has that been rated as overrated garbage now?? Seeing as anything good gets that title around here lol.bri360
Overrated garbage that only emos like, don't ya know. I'm so awesome I thought it sucked even in 97!!!111. Alright, I can't keep that up. FF7 is good. Not the greatest, but very good.
Anyway, as for the topic, no matter how hard I look, I still don't see Baldur's Gate 2 in that image. I want to give the nod to PS:T based solely on the strength of it's story, but the battles are not nearly as enjoyable as BG, which kinda lets it down in my opinion.

Every single game out there has its pros and its cons. You either enjoy it for its pros and aknowledge its cons, or dislike it for its cons and put the pros on second base. Planescape Torment has clunky combat, and a low resolution(though that's fixed by mods), but everything els is pretty much perfection which outweigh the cons, and the praise it gets for its story is well deserved.
I thought it was pretty good in 97 too.;)
For consoles I'm going to say the first Dragon Warrior. I knew so many kids who got beat up for their copy. Nothing like that for me to compare it to since then.
For PC I'm going to say Bard's Tale, partly cause I think it was that awesome and partly to be different.
Yes both of these games are dated by today's standards but back then they were epic.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong here. I love the hell out of PS:T and it's easily in my top 5 games of all time. The combat isn't even bad, per se, it just isn't as good as Baldur's Gate, while I enjoyed the story of BG equally. Thus giving BG the edge, just in my opinion.
"Apple II 64 k required" lol good times.
I still give the best rpg of all times tittle to xenogears imho.
I only read the OP but Im guessing this thread turned out to be a "Lets post our favorite RPG" thread.
So... Knights of The Old Republic.
no.......
- give me a break. "morality choices" are not the pinnacle of the genre's excellence. not a single one of my favorite RPGs has that. its not that important. RPGs were great before it, and they are great without it.
- the integration of morality choices in games still has a long way to go. there are still many issues surrounding it.
like how you quantify evil and good actions.
or how many games punish you for acting a certain way, simply because its considered evil.
or how many games dont let you "walk the line" between good and bad very much.
or how you are not presented with all the possible options for a given situation and thus take yourself down paths you dont want to go down.
or how the consequences of these decisions are awkwardly woven into the plot.
- just becuase something starts a trend or introduces a new feature that becomes common thereafter, that doesnt necessarily make it the best of its genre. killswitch was probably the first third person shooter to have a cover system. does that make it the best TPS game ever? not at all. and a I think the concept of a TPS cover system is far more innovative and important than morality choices.

[QUOTE="alfredooo"] Following scientific, factual history, Moses is not a Christian. I take it that you are one of those people who assume the age of the Earth being 6000 years old.

Zinggggggggggggggg!!
+1
Actually, there is no factual evidence that Moses ever even existed or that the Exodus occurred. Though given that Moses predates christianity, you'd be right in saying that he wasn't a christian. Not even an RPGMass Effect 2.

Personally, I think Fallout 1 takes the number one spot. Then again, I don't give a **** about which games are the "greatest" or the most "influential", just which ones are the best, so maybe this isn't the discussion for me.
Oh, wasteland fanboys. Fallout series is lucky to be the only wasteland/ post-apocalyptic RPG series. If were otherwise, it would be doomed due to the competition sporting more interesting art ****and overall polish.
Ravenchrome
Right, because that's what really matters in a role playing game.
The Fallout series, as a whole, trashes any other RPG series in terms of player freedom/choice and consequence, and that's a hell of a lot more important than pretty colors, or whatever else you're getting at here.
Ultima 4 is a great game and very influential. Ultima 7 is better however. Both are in my top RPG list. Since a lot of people here have probably not played it, here is a review of it (contains dirty humor/bad language).
I actually think overall, Ultima IV is better, even though I like Ultima VII better, especially the second part. Ultima VII had better dialogue system, a better story, and far better graphics, however, Ultima IV had a much better inventory system, was much more open, and was more stable. It also had ethical dilemmas which the two Ultima VII games did not have. The inventory system in both Ultima VII games is flat out BAD. Even for its time. I think the Serpents Isle is actually better than the Black Gate. It was far more thought provoking and better written.Lol, I love how the thread responses just end up being a list of everybody else's favorite "hands down, greatest RPG ever made." Neverwinter Nights for me :PAcidSoldnerum no, I consider it Bioware's worst. and notice how Ultima IV is not my favorite game.
In Ultima VII, if you lose a plot item, you can be stuck forever....that is a significant flaw that cannot be ignored. Ultima IV did not have this. I think Ultima VII's flaws are way more serious than IV's. You can't ignore that VII was also brought about from the evolution of the series, IV however, was a revolution.Depends on the criteria to declare it the greatest. Ultima VII is a better game than IV and even that got outdated years ago.

Im sure it had great influence and I can respect it for that but am im intereted in it or want to play it. HELLLLLLL NO. I saw the vids with spoony and have no intrest in these games. Its kinda like I can respect the betals in influencebut I dont like their music at all.
TC ain't lying, the Ultima series is crazy influential. It was literally deeper in it's story and morality than Morrowind or Oblivion when it came out in '85. Think about that.enterawesome
Morrowind and Oblivion (while amazing games) have very little to non existent story or morality.

I thought the story was fairly prominent in both, but you're right about morality. I just find the Elder Scrolls games to compare best with Ultima since they're very similar.[QUOTE="Arach666"][QUOTE="lawlessx"]

That´s my favourite JRPG too,as well as Phantasy Star 4.
I wonder why sega hasn´t made SoA2...
I would be happy if Sega just remade it in HD Me too,but I would love to see a sequel. The air battles with the gigas were amazing, and had such an epic music.Good post. Ultima IV was a great game and groundbreaking for its time. Its level of complexity was bascially unheard of in the early 80's and it stil has a higher level of depth than many current gen rpgs.
That's not Chrono Trigger. :?
