You'll never need more than 120GB on a console, no need to upgrade to a 640GB. For example, my PS3 has a 120GB HDD, and i've got 71GB left.

Would be nice if you could use a huge external hdd for the 360, but being m$ they decided consumers would have to pay these insane prices for their hdd.

Yeah I got about 160 gb with about 70 left, its still a hideous rip off, that they take laptop harddrives, flash on their OS, and stick them in a box so you can't use your own, just so they can charge up to 5x the price of the actual drive, its stuff like this that people should be more riled up about, its literally like stealing from customers.

The $299 Elite system already comes with a 120GB HDD.

Remind me of why I need to spend $100 for half the space of my default HDD again? :?

Hard-drives... you are actually trying to put up an argument about hard-drives. /facepalm 640 gb is a ridiculous amount of space that no one is going to use. I can't imagine someone using even more then 50 gb unless the download everything they can. 60 gb is even too much for me. I don't need all that space.

a 60GB is enough for most people, most will never upgrade, and if they do, they can go onto ebay and get a cheap 120GB.

Well I was speaking in terms of new and prospective customers. In my case, I was able to buy a practically new 120GB HDD for my 360 for $40 so if consumers are willing to do their homework and shop around, they'll be able to get deals like that too. :)

I have 250GB HDD in my launch PS3 and I have less than 20GB free... I store all my family photos, movies (fully uncompressed audio), game demos, games and my entire music library on my PS3.

Thats the problem, and the reason MS can charge so much, people just don't care, and people should. A 20 gb is what I have too, I can install 2 disks and have 1 gig left, that is pretty much nothing, sure you can uninstall and re-install disks over and over, but it becomes a pain, sure you don't have to install disks at all, but I got so used to the faster load times. It almost seems like people want to get played into spending way more money then they have to.

I remember there were some people making fun of the 360 having a 250gb hard drive, saying who needs all that "gigsters", then the PS3 introduced their 250gb too, lol. Anyway, upgrading your PS3 hard drive with larger storage space using any compatible hard drives is a plus. I mean the PS3 have more games with mandatory game installs so that's a good thing.

I don't install games, that's PC silliness I want nothing to do with :P 20 gigs is plenty if you don't install. And MS charging tons for harddrive is no different to Sony charging tons for memory cards last gen.

I could do that too! :x

I could easily have a 1TB PS3 (500GB internal, 500GB external)!

I could even go beyond that and have a 8.72TB PS3 (1TB x 8, 720GB internal)!

Well if any more MMOs are released for it I can easily see a problem since installing FFXI on a 20gig HDD leaves roughly 3-4Gigs left on my HDD. Meaning I can only have an extra 1-2 demos on it and if I rent movies from the marketplace sometimes I have to get the SD version because I don't have room for HD. I think there is a problem with the HDD cost and it should be lowered. It is quite sad when the cost of a new HDD is a third of the cost of the machine. Almost worth it to just save a little more and have a backup xbox 360 with 120gig HDD.

If the aftermarket HDDs are so popular with PS3 owners, why doesn't Sony just keep the PS3 HDD at around 60 GB and lower the price of the PS3? Why do they keep coming out with bigger HDDs for the PS3?

The slim boosted sales of the PS3, so I think the number of people replacing the HDD must be rather small. Therefore, I don't see this a significant advantage for most PS3 owners. Heck, I haven't even filled my 80GB MGS4 PS3, yet.

i could fill 640 easily :P altho i do get by on 40gb cause im fortunate to have my laptop hooked up as a media server.Only thing that could bother me in the future might be rock band dlc space.

Besides extra space is always nice cause i would prolly use my PS3 and download a lot more even tho virgin media would prolly throttle my bandwith if i went nuts.

The 299 Elite system comes with a 120gb HD, more than you'd ever need in a console.

640gb in a home consoleis a huge waste.

If you need a drive to store movies / pictures / lossless music on buy an external drive, like every other sane person does.

Whoever keeps saying that you only need x amount of GBs obviously doesn't have a lot of stuff to put on their HDD in the first place. For someone like me who has over 50 PSN games and a dozen PSone classics to go along with demos, installs, music, pictures, themes, videos of all kind, etc I need a big HDD.

So glad I upgraded to 320GB and who knows by the end of the gen I'll prolly need to upgrade some more.

You'll never need more than 120GB on a console, no need to upgrade to a 640GB. For example, my PS3 has a 120GB HDD, and i've got 71GB left.

I hope you're not excusing getting charged over 300% standard cost for a harddrive.

[QUOTE="killzowned24"][QUOTE="locopatho"][QUOTE="killzowned24"] that 20 gigs is really only like 13 gigs and is not enough at all. great deal showing again why PS3 is best.

Of course it's enough, I've got dozens of games saved on it and am no where near running out. Maybe you're confused because 360 games don't come with mandatory 5 gig installs unlike a certain other console.

game save lol. what about actual games and demos?I guarantee if your a gamer with 13 gigs you will constantly having to delete stuff. Also, of course it doesnt have installs ,hard drive is not standard in every 360.. lol

"A gamer?" I have dozens of games, have plenty of room left, and if I had a PS3 with that many games I would have run out of room long ago, even with a 60 gig which was the standard model when I bought my 360.

Some games run much worse if they aren't installed also. The movies on the last mission for mass effect2 stuttered constantly on my first playthrough. After I installed the disk and did it again it ran perfectly.

That's a 3.5" drive. It won't work unless you put that in an external enclosure device..
