Has GTA been dethroned?

there have been quite a few new sandbox games this gen which i personally found more fun then GTA 4. just cause 2, mafia 2 (although it isn't a new franchise), saints row are all better games than GTA 4 and i will never understand how that game got rated 'perfect'. the game is just so boring compared to just just cause 2 and the story in mafia 2 is better.

i think GTA has been dethroned by just cause 2 but GTA 5 will probably destory all games,i just hope it is more like san andreas because that is one of the best games ever imo.

Sandbox games are a dying breed. At least they are for me, as there's just not much fun to be had with them.

it doesn't take much to beat GTA4.

Just Cause 2 on PC destroys GTA4.

I honestly thought that GTA4 was a ste p back in the series, I mean San Andreas was just SO much better and everyone was hyped to get a nex gen sequel and we were all expecting this AMAZINGFUN AWESOME GAME that would be so much better... but instead we got GTA4. After you beat the story of GTA4 there was nothing to do, and while the game may have been a technical achievement it was from a gameplay perspective a let down IMO.

Just Cause 2 is the new next gen king of open sandbox games IMO.

Yes, by Just Cause 2. Let me tell you something. Messing around in GTAIV= decent fun. Messing around in Just cause 2 = hours of "OH MY GOD I'M SURFING ON AN AIRPLANE!" and related things.

GTA 4 was just another example at how much developers are riding the name of popular franchises in order to squeeze every last drop of money they can out of it. GTA 4 was so boring, its amazing how much of a step back it was from San Andreas which was one of the most solid games ever made.

No, nothing ever will. GTA IV was great, despite being disappointing and lacking content when compared to SA.

If the gunplay is even more refined than in RDR, and there's things to do, stuff to spend the money on, and more over the top fun in the next GTA, it'll be amazing.

Just Cause 2 is pure stupid fun, and I love it, but overall I'd still say it's not as good as GTA IV, definitely not as good as past GTA games. Still amazing though.

I thought it was dethroned by other games in the same st yle, after GTA IV turned out to be a complete failure compared to SA.

Yea Just Cause 2. it was a sleeper, but by far the best. free falling off a mountain is awesome

I know it's very cool for hipsters to hate GTA IV and all, but the fact of the matter is that it remains "throned".

San Andreas is still the undisputed king of sandbox games. No sandbox game since has even come close to matching the overall package of San Andreas. GTA IV has arguably been dethroned by games like the SR series and Just Cause 2 when it comes to how fun the game is. Still, that was one game. I guarantee you when GTA V comes out, Rockstar will have another hit and the GTA series will be back with a bang. Rockstar have learnt their lesson and I have no doubt GTA V will end up being the game of the generation. I also wouldn't bet against Rockstar finally topping San Andreas.

Of course in terms of sales even GTA IV hasn't been dethroned this generation. And GTA never will. The next GTA could be even worse than GTA IV, and it wouldn't matter. It would still sell over 20 million copies on name alone and no other sandbox franchise will ever come close to competing with GTA in terms of sales.

The first Infamous dethroned it. And then the first Infamous was dethroned by the sequel. So at present time, the sandbox game king is Infamous 2.

JC 2 was severely under rated imo. The amount of stupid fun in it was crazy.

They all have some elements that are better but the total package falls a bit short in all of them.
