This is a question that Gamers by nature asks and wrote a short writing about it . it's true that this question is asked by Gamers by nature, but you can answer it in this thread :P

and the article:

Hi, my name is BranchedOut, and I'm easily startled in games.

I recently picked up the PC game, Singularity. And I have to take a break. I'm just too easily startled! I play on PC, with the mouse sensitivity on high. This game takes a cue from Dead Space (another title I LOVE, but have to take breaks from) and puts you in a creepy setting. Well, things pop out, and I jump. My arm moves, and so dose my mouse. Suddenly, I'm looking at the floor. I'm getting walloped on while I reorientate myself, and by the time I CAN kill it, it's already killed me!

Sure, you can say this never happens to you, internet tough guy. But me? I'm easily startled. When alone. But throw a friend in there, and all of a sudden my startleability plummets! I don't know what it is, really. Safety by numbers?

But I have to take a break from this game, for right now. It's a fun little shooter, blowing things heads off (though, AFTER they pop out and scare you). But I can't say TOO much…. Because I've only played so little… I played for maybe 30 minutes. After killing some non-scary humans, I decided, "Break time!" I'll probably take another go tommorow.

I don't know when games took on this form of thriller aspect. Was it at the start of 3D gaming, where you could look left and right, and BAM! Something could pop out? Or was it in the PS2 era, where graphics were good enough to where it could surprise you due to realism? Whatever the case, Dear Developers: Our love-hate relationship is finicky, but I'll stay with you. It's a slow burn, but it smolders fantastically!

END OF WRITING

Pesonally, I uninstalled original Silent Hill because it was too scary and I couldn't handle it. but I might go and start it again someday...

What about you?

Dont see how this should be on this board, still, its a nice break from the usual crap most post here.

In my life, Ive played many Survival Horror games, and there have been only 2 games so far that I had to take breaks to rest.

The first was Doom 3. I just could not control myself at times. I do not jump or act like a girl. Its just that my mind needs a break after a while because the atmosphere here was so well done, that I had to get away from that creepy mars base.

The second was the amazing Dead Space. I finished the game in 2 weeks, because I could not stand playing more than 1 chapter a day. Except for the last ones that are pure action. The early ones have this perfect nerve breaking feeling that I had to lay down after playing.

Just to clarify some things. I played both games (and all my other SH and Horror games) with lights off, complete darkness except from the TV screen, Home Theatre (when available) and my AC at 18 ºC (65ºF). That was to create more "atmosphere". It works, and it works wonders. Except for your health and sanity xD

The footsteps of the Taken creeping up on your are pretty creepy in Alan Wake. There's one part where Alan is in a multi-story wooden building. You hear the baddies creeping around above and below you, and it was 2 in the morning when my fiance said "We need to watch something happy before bed. Turn this off". I happily complied. Tense stuff.

No, but I bought Half Life from Steam for 1.59 € (Go Steam :P !) , when I was in a vent a headcrab jumped on my head out of nowhere, and the flashlight illuminates almost nothing so it was 90% dark, I could just see the headcrab on my monitor.

Ravenholm wasn't scary at all compared to this (okay it way:P. The first time, but the second time it just pure fun :P, those saw blades are awesome)

Maybe I wouldn't call these situations scary, but really tense. And this is coming from a guy who played a lot of horror games and didn't find them scary.

FEAR 2. I never got very far in it because I was just done with the horror being turned to 11 constantly. At some point it becomes stressful rather than scary, and you have no real tension built up because it's inevitable that something crazy is about to happen no matter what you're doing.

Silent hill on PS1

Animal-Mother

This. The game is still scary even today. It was the only game I had to take breaks shutting off the PS like an ass; the environments and atmosphere was so oppressive and creepy that it messed with your head. However its all about physiological fear, you never encounter enemies that are that scary, its just the feeling that the atmosphere give you, it **** with your head.

However, Silent Hill 2 is still a better game overall. Just not as scarier as the first.

Can't say that I have. I have never been scared by a game in my life. I just get really immersed in horror games. The more sinister and foreboding the atmosphere, the better.

Despite the fact that I love horror games, I do sometime have to take breaks. Not so much nowadays, but when I was younger.

When I would play the Resident Evil games as a kid, I would often stop and read through all the files I'd collected if I was scared to go through a door or was hearing noises. The labrynth in Silent Hill 2 still gets me to this day. The F.E.A.R games and Condemned too.

None of those compare to Siren for the PS3. I'd never been so scared by a game that I had to stop playing it altogether until I played this one. Hell, I even watched people playing it on youtube and yet I still couldn't bring myself to play it. I'll get back to it someday, but it's the scariest game I've ever played and it's a shame that so few have played it.

No, how can you be scared by video games? Nothing scares me, I'm hardcore, and my anonymity means you can't disprove that... But seriously, FEAR & Dead Space had a few moments where I'd pause the game & take a moment to collect myself. I also only play games like those late at night, in a dark, quite room. On my second playthrough of Dead Space I had a mate over. Just wasn't the same, I was blazing through it. It's all about the atmosphere, both in the game & outside. If you're playing a horror game during the day, in a lit up room or with someone else who is talking/killing the immersion, then you might as well play any other action orientated game.

Do so,it´s probably the best horror experience out there.

Also, the upcoming Amnesia: The Dark Descent is surely going to be even better.

Doom 3.

Was playing it in the middle of the night. No one was at home but me. Lights were off everything... game constantly freaked me out, but then I went downstairs and got my handy Maglite Flashlight and knew everything would be okay. ;)

I strongly beg to differ. Condemned, Metro 2033 and Dead Space are 3 of the scariest experiences ever created. Highly tense, intimidating games that actually make me sweat from suspense andfear of the unknown. The only games from past generations that have done that to me are Silent Hill, Fatal Frame 2 and Doom 3.

But I always play these kind of games at night, with the lights off and headphones on. You're missing half the expeience any other way.

Resident Evil 1 Remake for the Gamecube. I think I was too young for it. The crimson heads...just broke me, lol. I'd feel sooooooo good getting to a safe room to save. Then I'd quit and put off playing the game for like 6-days at a time simply because I wasn't ready to face more crimsons :) I've always been a horror film/game lover since I was like 8, but the crimson heads were just too much XD But I got over that pretty quickly, and now nothing phases me :\ I kinda miss that fear.

lol.

I get startled in games when you're deep underwater and you can't see much, and then something pops out in the water. Something about that scenario just scares the **** outta me, and I'm a great swimmer and everything lol.

YES! I thought I was the only one! The atmosphere is so eerie I just can't stand them.

Also I haven't completed Bioshock 1 (mainly because I'm stuck) but also cos it scares me.

I couldn't play F.E.A.R 1 by myself, nor Half Life 2 on my first playthrough, the same even goes for L4D1 the first time I played it.

But some games I just have to steer clear of, such as Alone in the Dark, Silent Hill and Resident Evil (the classic ones) I was scarred as a child by older family members playing them hehe.

The first game to do this to me was Doom 3. That game was just so disturbing, especially because you couldn't even hold a flashlight and a gun at the same time. Duct tape, anyone?

I also have to relax after playing some scary mission in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. once in a while, mostly the ones involving Bloodsuckers, underground laboratories (or anything underground for that matter) and desolated factories/villages.

Definately Silent Hill on the PS1. I was still young, and so naive and scared
