I don't think he's saying all western games are larger in scope but there is no denying that western devs set the benchmark in graphics and gameplay, Japan is in decline their own developers even admit to this.[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"]

SE is basically the face of all Japanese RPGs. I'm not an idiot, I know there are many other Japanese game devs, but typically when I hear "Japanese games" I think either Nintendo or Square Enix. And again, we're seeing more and more that more Western developers are innovating in the industry over Japanese developers.Stop making excuses for buggy games, Bethesda has no interest in spending time or money polishing their games because they were succesful with broken/buggy games, they couldnt even get Brink to work right and thats a FPS.
Dark Souls is japanese and its so buggy (that's what developers themself said) that they're aren't even sure if another Souls game will be released.silversix_
Dark Souls is buggy but its no where near the pile of mess which is Skyrim. The bugs in skyrim are everywhere, its like Bestheda deliberately placed bugs everywhere.
And which more do you play of, American/European or Japanese? I imagine most people's answers here are going to be the former.

Not sure how he is making excuses when he is criticizing American/European developers, and Bethesda is an American developer. Assuming you're talking about the OP, maybe you should actually read it.

I wasnt speaking to a specific person....
Now this thread reminds me of that I never had the need to install a patch for Koei's (strategy) games since the 80s....
I take it you prefer ff14 > ff13 in that case?[QUOTE="Some-Mist"][QUOTE="Riverwolf007"]
tbo, i would take buggy and open world over being funneled down a 20 foot wide corridor for an entire game everytime.
dawso0n
No I would prefer RDR.
didn't know RDR was buggy...then again I haven't played it since I get bored with rockstar games pretty fast. I'd much rather play something like super mario galaxy.Really? Most bosses can actually be glitched into "you defeated." (Killing the Red Dragon with one arrow from behind. Ceaseless Discharge falling to his death. Farming suicidal forest guardians. Un-killable knights. Taking out Strayed Demon with dung pies and a feather spell.) It a great game, but buggy it was.
DireOwl
This isn't a glitch. Its supposed to happen if you hit its arm enough.
Hey, let's not state opinions. I've noticed wester games are indeed very buggy. Granted I haven't bought as much Japanese games this gen (~15-20%), but I noticed a lot more bugs in western 'sandbox' games. I do think western games generally have a better user interface / menu though.Have you ever noticed that crappy games are always japanese?

I sometimes wonder if Bethseda puts extra bugs in skyrim....Just for the lulz
[QUOTE="soulitane"]Wasn't FFXIV completely broken at launch?DrTrafalgarLawThat one was outsourced to chinese developers...and you can guess what the standards of any chinese product are...
Irrelevant. That's like saying American and Japanese products are crap if they are manufactured in China. Almost all products are manufactured in China, but it's the party controlling them which makes the difference. Despite FF14 being outsourced to Chinese devs, it's Square Enix's responsibility to monitor the quality of their title.
Remember Starcraft: Ghost? which was outsourced to 3rd party devs, and eventually to Swingin' Ape Studios? The game didn't meet Blizzard's standards, and it was cancelled. Remember the original Diablo 3, the one which was made by Blizzard: North, but got scrapped because Blizzard thought it just wasn't fun enough, and hence, started from scratch in 2007? That's what the monitoring company should do.
FF14's quality was Square Enix's fault, and no one else's.
Bayonetta on PS3 was garbage. Was that an asian dev or Western?XschlistaXI can't believe this thread went on for so long without someone mentioning this game.
Bayonetta is made by Platinum Games a Japanese developer.
So much for the TC with no Eastern games are buggy.

Mr_Cumberdale
The key point is 'sandbox'. Sandbox games are naturally more buggy due to unpredictabilty. You'll never know where players will go or what they'll do. Japanese don't really have a neck for sandbox games. And when they do, like Dark Souls...err...yeah, it's buggy.
Funny how you mention Dark Souls, because my brother ran into a GAME-BREAKING just barely 5 frigging minutes into the game, and I saw it with my very own eyes. That moment was the moment when I thought of Gamespot's 9.5 score: wtf, how a game with a bugs as major as these can get such a score?Japanese games are hardly ever bug ridden. They may not be the most well received games critically speaking, but look at Japanese games for a second. Nintendo 1st party games are like the least buggy games in existence. Games like Vanquish, Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, and many others are just so polished. They don't rely on post release patches for completion. They don't rely on the $60 day 1 buyers to be their beta testers. Bethesda's incompetence doesn't exist in Japanese development. They truly care about their products and really do put forth their best effort to release a bug free, fully functional game.
Metalmania posted a thread in another forum which was talking about how From Software, the developers of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, are hesitant to release a sequel to Dark Souls because they feel as if their game had too many bugs in it. They genuinely feel bad for releasing a game with bugs, and they don't feel like the fans of the Souls series will forgive them for releasing a game that contains bugs. This is asinine to me, because I completed both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, and I didn't run into any bugs. In a game like Skyrim, I can't make my way down a mountain without running into a plethora of bugs. Not only that, Bethesda just ignores all the media coverage that puts their buggy problems under the spotlight, and they just try to sweep it under the rug and cover their ears. It's nice to see From Software living up to their mistakes, even if they are minimal and practically non-existent from my point of view.

It's same with cars. Japanese cars are always reliable while Western cars just keeps breaking down.willzthegamer
Yep! Same with consoles as well!
Yes I do notice all the buggy games are American.
I also notice that all the garbage games are Japanese.
so much anti japanese sentiment and overlooking a lot of things in this thread.
Ah only something a bunch of kids on SW can do.
I find on average Japanese games are a little more polished when compared to Western games with similar budgets. Could be attributed to many things other than developer skill though. Western games tend to be a little more open ended or with a focus on multiplayer which is naturally harder to bug test thoroughly.Ace6301
That's why I dislike the western mentality, they strive to do what's cool rather than what works. Sacrificing quality for scope is unacceptable imo.
Try to make open world games like Fallout NV/3 and Skyrim. With all the new stuff added to those games. Then try to make another mario/Zelda/Tales game. Much easier in the bug department i can assure you.koen57
Indeed, some people forget that Final Fantasy XXIII-2 has the same exact gameplay and linearity as Final Fantasy 1 on Nes.
Devs like Bethesda will allways be bashed for making complex games that actually push hardware!

lol wrong person to point that out. I'm the one bashing Skyrim since it was released for that same reason. To the person saying japanese consoles are always more reliable than american ones, i had my original Xbox for 5 years and did not get a single problem but did get lots of problems with ps2 and some with ps3 (not major ones though).Japanese games are crappy so who cares if they not buggy :P
Jane_22
2 of the 3 10/10's this gen are from Japan.
I think you're forgetting that a lot of the Japanese games we play are huge titles.bobbetybob
This, and especially European games tend to be more ambitious than the Japanese games that usually make their way to the West. Not to mention sandbox design is infinitely more popular in Europe and America, and sandbox design is susceptible to being buggy, as it's harder for the developer to predict what the player is going to do.

ceaseless discharge death is scripted , there is no glitch. The Red Dragon Glitch was fixed , Forest Guardians isnt tthat easy to get to their deaths kwikly (Unfortuntely ) Stray demon is a legitmate challange. Laggy parts?
