It's a game. Interactive movies which is a sub-genres of the Adventure genre. Not even close. I wouldn't even call it a game as much as a choose your own adventure book in digital form.

God no. To me, Heavy Rain is simply an awful game.
I take it you hated Shenmue as well. hey hey don't put those two games in the same sentence :-PTo me, there is no best game. Every game has a strength and weakness that evens itself out with another game. I do have favorite games, but I don't really think it's the best game of all time. It's just, some games, I get a greater enjoyment out of it than others.
Heavy Rain is certainly a great game, but there's some certain aspects of it I feel other games do a better job at.

Heavy Rain is nothing like Shenmue.
Shenmue allowed for more exploration and was more open, but they were essentially the same thing.[QUOTE="GreySeal9"]

Shenmue was mostly an action/adventure game with an emphasis on exploration and some contextual button press/quick time event stuff sprinkled in for effect. Heavy Rain is pretty much an interactive movie that is entirely made up of contextual button press/quick time even stuff. They are both games, but Shenmue is far more of a "traditional" game. Shemnue also has a much more linear story progression. It doesn't really attempt to do the "make your own choice" sort of thing in any significant way.
Again, the only similarities are clunky controls, awkward voice acting and QTE, even though they were far less prominent in Shenmue.

Probably one of the most interesting games this gen, but far from the best imo. Not even the best game released in the first quarter. I'll give it the best game of Feb 2010 though.
Bioshock 2 i thought was better that month.. or even Dante's Inferno..Probably one of the most interesting games this gen, but far from the best imo. Not even the best game released in the first quarter. I'll give it the best game of Feb 2010 though.

was a solid AAA piece of interactive software in my book, great game, but it's no match for Mass Effect 2 in terms of an overall gaming experience.
In no way does Heavy Rain deserve game of generation title...Its just a point and click adventure game made with QTEs, very nice and engaging QTEs but QTEs nonetheless. It being an adventure game what is imporant is the story and the story is filled with so many plotholes you understand why the devs have said this is a game for one playthrough. Also when talking of story it has to be said that there are many adventure games that have better stories, characters and better developed settings. So imo its good that the genre has come to consoles but I would never claim the game to be the best at anything really. Its good and thats about it.
Hah. **** no. The game didn't even have a good story to carry it. It is a remarkably different game, that goes against many gaming conventions; I admire it for that. However even for an 'interactive movie' it is downright terrible. Because even B grade thrillers have better narratives than it does, and even games that are 'interactive dramas' have far better interactivity than it does. In short, your opinion couldn't be further off the mark.skrat_01
This. If Heavy Rain's gameplay was something more substantial than its point-and-click/QTE hybrid gameplay I could forgive the narrative, but when the game is all but entirely story driven it's impossible to ignore the awful, awful writing.
It cracks my top 15 and maybe my top 10 Idk its been a while since I complied my list but it was an amazing experience that surpassed my expectations in every way possible including the story.
I love thillers/whodunits/mysteries and I have a problem with being able to figure out some of them too quickly but was blown away @ HR's reveal and story. It wasn't perfect by any means and Cage could use a "realism" editor but it was damn good and I can't say enough good things about it.
Probably top 3 this year in title I've played and I think doesn't get its due props here in SW.

From what I've seen, the voice acting was pretty awful was well.
I mean, people give Final Fantasy XIII crap for its voice acting, but atleast it's lively and sounds energetic. Heavy Rain's voice acting is ridiculously wooden.
I think this is the kind of gamein whichpeople overlook these things because it does other stuff that is pretty amazing. Still, the game is too story-driven to ignore that stuff IMO.
