wow. the darkness? weak[QUOTE="AD216"][QUOTE="mythrol"] [QUOTE="MJPK"]
It has a good story but Mass Effect, The Darkness and Bioshock have better storys imo.

What was wrong with the darkness?
it aint terrible. just not nothin memorableThis topic is locked from further discussion.
So I just beat Heavy Rain on my second playthrough and all I can say is WOW. This game has the best story I've seen this entire gen so far. (I'm not going to argue about what future not released titles might or might not be better - I'm talking current shipped games)
I'm highly shocked after playing it that it's not a AAA game. The way that the story is handled and everything unfolds is truly a masterpiece. And even replaying the game I got an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT story. I also found the controls to even further ENHANCE the story, making you feel more a part of the action then I've felt before. The entire branding system seems to allow for almost unlimited playthrough because you make so many choices that have an effect on different scenes.
Having played a ton of RPGs this gen, which are suppose to be story driven, Heavy Rain blows them all out of the water. Beliable characters, grounded in real life, and plenty of TWISTS. Simply a stellar, amazing game.
9.5 for me (only problem was the sixaxis controls sometimes didn't register right).
my biggest issue with the game were the controls. i know its a different experience than most titles, but is it that much to ask developers to not use a modifier (in this case the l2 button) to move? i think the left analog stick would have handled it nicely. on topic, i liked the story, but i still preferred ME2. That's the main reason I can't seem to get into this game I believe, the controls. I keep trying to play the game, but quit after half an hour or so because the controls really put me off. I'll probably finish it some day, when I feel I have nothing else to play at that moment but for now it's sitting on the shelf.Heavy Rain has a great story. I'll admit that there is a couple of problems with the plot but I think some people are way too critical of the plot holes.

funny i thought it was the worst story this gen
even in 2010, imo Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 blow HR away, and what i've played of Metro 2033 is great too
FF13 says hi.
felipebo
It does? How does an inanimate object manage that?
Final Fantasy was a bunch of whiny, miserable characters walking along a straight road for no apparent reason in the first 20 hours. That is exceptionally poor storytelling.

It's completely subjective, but I'm loving the story so far. HR's story, on the other hand, had me questioning if video games will ever deliver a story on par with movies or books (which I thought they one day would).
To me there are so many holes and the characters half the time act like such idiots that I cant really say the story is better than something like Bioshock, The Witcher or Mass Effect. If I were to include some fairly new point and clicks they would also be imo higher than Heavy Rain.
[QUOTE="Vinegar_Strokes"]
just don't think about the story to hard otherwise it all falls apartmythrol
Like every story ever written.
That is a ridiculous statement.
How many stories have you read/seen/experienced? Because if the answer is "less than all of them" then you have no idea what you are on about.
Eh.....well I certainly disagree. I'd also place what you're stating on the gameplay to be honest which I found truly great. It's also kind of funny 'cause you can play the story out to something that actually makes more sense by playing less of the game. You'll probably be more satisfied with that then the jumbled charade by having all 4 characters survive.
Edit: By playing less of the game, I mean certain characters being killed throughout it.
Don't know about Heavy Rain, but i've heard it has plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon. I mean, if you can hear the thoughts of your characters and one of them is the killer, how long can they not show the character that is the killer thinking about killing?
Btw, best story this gen is Cryostasis.

+1 for mentioning Cryostasis
imagine how much better Heavy Rain would've been if they had told the player from the very beginning who the killer was and then went from there with the story? it would've been a lot more exciting if you got to play as the killer, instead of setting up some lame M. Night "it's a tweeeeest!" for 5-6 hours

[QUOTE="dommeus"][QUOTE="mythrol"]If they release the sequel on consoles then I highly recommend it, if you like RPG's that is. weren't they talking about releasing the original title on the 360? what happened with that?TBH I was talking on consoles. As I don't have a gaming PC and can't access games like The Witcher - though I have heard that they're really good.
clone01
I believe it was canceled, but CD Projekt Red weren't developing it, it was outsourced to another developer. They did say recently that the tech for the sequel can be ported to 360/PS3, so it may be that they bring console versions out after the PC release.
the story isn't necessarily the greatest, but what makes Heavy Rain the best story-driven game is how it lets the player interact with it.
Actions have consequence. When you fail, the characters die for good. It's the most intense videogame experience i've ever played.
Not because of its story, but of its 'game mechanics'.
I thoroughly agree with you , would of been one hell of a movie also. But the best part of it is what I consider to be an psychological horror factor , really , no game this gen , except for siren , made me feel kinda scared like this one , the taxidermist DLC also take this 'horror' I call to another level , it's truly a masterpiece IMO. :)
How could it have been a movie? It would be destroyed by critics. It's lame by movie standards. It's poorly written. A lot of plotholes and cheap writing. Seriously guys video games are not about storylines.I thoroughly agree with you , would of been one hell of a movie also. But the best part of it is what I consider to be an psychological horror factor , really , no game this gen , except for siren , made me feel kinda scared like this one , the taxidermist DLC also take this 'horror' I call to another level , it's truly a masterpiece IMO. :)

As for the critics I really don't care it doesn't have to be a blockbuster , the story certainly isn't the best by movie standards , but then again I'm yet to see a suspense thriller involving serial killers getting anything higher than average (if you know please show me , I'd really like to know). The plotholes you are most likely talking about will be filled via DLC.
As for videogames and storylines some have pretty good ones, like uncharted.

I can name you about 5-6 excelent serial killer movies at the top of my head, but i guess they are before your time so you wouldn't know about it.And Uncharted as an example of good Storytelling? Try harder.
And do yo even know what a blockbuster is?
It was a good game, but the story is basically every murder mystery cliche ever written all rolled up into one nice package. While I thoroughly enjoyed my first play through of the game, I am finding it really hard to play back through it for a second time. It could just be the lousy control system that makes me not want to do it, or it could just be the wealth of other games to play this year.

Well I'm twenty , but if it is indeed before my time it just shows how the genre is lacking and how it shouldn't be much of a prbolem to try to contribute.Well it's subjective but I really find it's story very good a la indiana jones which is a critically acclaimed franchise. Not saying it should be a movie but since you asked me to try harder , Bioshock maybe?
Yes of course I do , it's an entertainment media rental store , lol joking , it is a very successful film I belive?
The story doesn't hold a candle to those from movies, but for a game it's pretty good. Yes it has plot holes, most games have plot holes.
Few games have managed to make me as emotionally invested in the characters, as Heavy Rain did though, which I would consider an achievement.
Haha, yeah some parts were so intense (partly due to the awesome control scheme), I had to laugh in amazement. It was probably the most thriling and intense game I've ever played, plotholes and all. I loved Heavy Rain. The story was great, and that's even having the game spoiled for me before I even got a chance to play it.
yokofox33
A blockbuster is simply a movie that makes a lot of money, it has nothing to do with critical acclaim. As for serial killer movies well, here are some newer ones i thought off Seven Zodiac Silence of the Lambs Red Dragon Memento Insomnia Dirty Harry (lol) They are all above average, not as you claimed. As a poster mentioned above Heavy Rain is one big cliche. A poorly written one at that. As for Bioshock i mean the setting is cool, big daddies, little sisters, Andrew Ryan, but i don't try to think about it real hard, it doesn't make much sense. Everyone talks about that twist in the middle, but the story wasn't that well. Yeah clubbing Andrew Ryan was probably one of the best moments but that's all it has. So it's decent. I'm just saying that games aren't about storylines they are about GAMEplay.GeneralShowzer
Lol my memory is failing on me how could I forget those , I've watched seven , zodiac , silence of the lambs and red dragon indeed awesome movies, gotta check the other three ones out though. And yeah I agree with you games are about gameplay , and I , too , don't spend much time thinking about their stories, it happened with heavy rain cause, you know, it's a game you can play upside down without having any problem in succeeding ,it requires relatively little to no effort :?
The best story in a game you've played.i garantee you that heavyrain will sweep every best story awards. heavyrain has the best story not just this gen but of all times
