There's a difference between a good story and good storytelling.

not to mention some of the plot holes O,o

a great story shouldnt have plot holes imo

Yandere

Citizen Kane that is herald as one of the greatest movies of all time; also had one of the biggest plot holes ever.

..And it's constantly bashed because the movie sucks, the movie is only praised these days because what it did to the movie industry not the quality of the movie.

what??... Citizen Kane is amazing.

FF13 says hi.

NAh FFXIII story isn't that great either. If I had to pick etween the two I'd go with Heavy Rain.

"Heavy Rain" isn't Odin Sphere.

foxhound_fox

Man, I never see any other users on here that enjoyed Odin Sphere.

[QUOTE="dommeus"][QUOTE="alextherussian"]I would not classify it as best story ever. But I dont think I could honestly make that distinction about any game. To me it is definitely up there with Bioshock, Mass Effect and Braid. I thought the twist ranks right up there with would you kindly. . On a complete side note, the Witcher is outdone from story and atmosphere by Vampires the Masquerade. alextherussian
Deus Ex, Planescape Torment, KOTOR and The Witcher are probably my favourite stories in gaming so far (that I have played at least)

I fully, 100% agree with your choices, I just thought the point was to keep it to this generation and on consoles as the TC previously mentioned. The Vampire stuff I just mentioned because the game gets absolutely no love.

I played it, it was decent enough for its time. But a better story than Heavy Rain? Not in my opinion. No where near in my opinion. But worth playing, What seems to be held against it for me is, it made me feel so sick playing it. I've played hundreds of games in my time and this one stands on the same plateau only with Bond Agent Under Fire as games which made people feel so sickly just looking at it.

Your list of serial killer films is pretty good but you should replace Red Dragon with Manhunter. It's the same book but told with more urgency and style.

Heavy Rain had a great story? It just felt like a derivative combination of Se7en and Saw to me... and even Saw is a cheap knock-off on Se7en.

Chemical_Viking

It does? How does an inanimate object manage that?

Final Fantasy was a bunch of whiny, miserable characters walking along a straight road for no apparent reason in the first 20 hours. That is exceptionally poor storytelling.

Even though I don't think FFXIII's story is all that great, really? Did you pay attention?

I'm so confused as to why every description of FFXIII involves the word "straight." The paths in FFXIII aren't straight, they're winding. Do people add this word because they think it makes it sound worse than it really is?

Seriously? Heavy Rain has so many plot holes it looks like swiss cheese. I'm not even talking small nit picks or things you can ignore I'm talking about incredibly stupid things that just defy belief and do not make any sense in the slightest. Awful story.

Best story this gen is a handheld game... Hotel Dusk, after that id look towards an expansion of a game NWN2: MotB then random adventure games like A Vampyre Story, 3 Cards & Overclocked that nobody (even most PC gamers) will play, moar handhelds (Ace Attorney) and then the Witcher:EE. I'd still like to play Heavy Rain, not going to hold my breath for the story though (especially after the god awful mystery/Aztec/Matrix story of Fahrenheit)

No. Too many plot holes. What makes the game good isn't the full on narrative though, it's mostly about how you can alter it and how personal the experience can be. Great game, fun story, but best story? **** NO!

you its really not the best story this gen by any means. It lacks continuity. There are some flaws with it. its a decent story and a deent game, as with most games this gen.

The story is told in an interesting way but the story itself is fairly weak when compared to other media. For a game it's decent but nowhere near the best.

I found the story in Heavy Rain to be amazing, however there are more than just a few plotholes which really hinders the experience. I would give the overall plot nod to BioShock. The best plotwist by far, and if you're saying that you know it before Andrew Ryan told you, someone tipped you off. By far the biggest Holy .... moment of this generation so far.

As far as the story goes, I'll have to agree. This story is very very good. I don't count games that came from past gens, because those are continuous stories. So for just this gen, yes, Heavy Rain gets my vote.
