The list below shows the most played games on PC according to Nielsen. Half of the games are over 4 years old and 2 of them date back to the 90s. It's also surprising that Halo dominates all FPSs on PC. (On a personal note, this justifies my opinion that Half-Life 2 wasn't a "great" game. It was good, not great.)

Top Ten Played PC Games in June 2007:

  1. World of Warcraft
  2. Halo CE (2003)
  3. The Sims
  4. Halo 2
  5. Runescape (2001)
  6. Madden
  7. Warcraft III (2003)
  8. Warcraft (1994)
  9. Counter Strike (1999)
  10. GTA

why would you play halo for pc anyways... they're crap, especially if you're not playing co op

just goes to show you the most popular game isn't always the best

nod to GTA on the list, pc gamers get to play the online multiplayer version while console players are left in the dust...

Halo1 the 2nd most played PC game? I'm finding this hard to believe... I mean I thought CS and BF were way more popular, Halo2 is 4th on the list! Did it even sell a fraction of for e.g CS:S?

How can PC gaming die? The platform will always be around and people will always want to play games on it. At worst the budgets for making games would get smaller but considering how much content is made for free (mods/freeware) I can't see a situation where no one is making games.

Yeah, PC gaming is sure dead...

Just like it has been for decades. Give it a break. PC gaming has about as much chance of dying as console gaming. Look at places like South Korea, where PC gaming thrives almost more than TV and movies, yet consoles are dead.

Nielson is the most repsected name in marketing/sales strategy data = owned.

This is rather hliarious.. considering how outspoken the die hard lemmings are, yet they represent such a small fraction of the overal gaming public that they might as well not even exist.

And clearly 50 cent bulletproof is better than SotC because it sold more/was played more right?

Keep in mind that Xbox players (and 360 players) still play halo 2, which is older than halo 2 on PC so does that mean that Xbox gaming is dieing?

Yeah man. As credible as your (TC) source maybe, I think they just botched this one. Maybe those are American numbers, 'cause in my country, it's Dota, Starcraft and CS all over (with not a console in sight, save for the occassional Wii).

Blizzard is making money just from people playing WoW. And then there's the new games they're shooting down the tubes.

And people will keep playing Counter Strike as long as it's fun.

Where's your Live and PSN numbers? I only see a link to Steam. The Steam stats only show number of users logged on. It says nothing of the activity. Perhaps they are logging on to replay Counter Strike, again-and-again?

Ew, a sports game on PC?

Anyway, CS is better than any FPS on consoles IMO. I usually go to my friends house just to play it. I'm not sure about the other games but if I was a PC gamer, I would still be playing CS aswell. "bu buh but teh graphics"

According to Xfire:
1. WoW
2. CoD2 MP
3. CS:S
4. BF2
5. GW

According to Gamespy:
1. HL1
2. HL2
3. BF2
4. Wolfenstein: ET
5. BF2142

Both Halos are outside top10 in both places, I can't believe Nielsen actually thinks they got it right, any PC gamer should immediately notice that something is very very wrong in their list.

Fire up Halo CE , and all you will see is about 100-200 people on at once ... its pretty pathetic.

Counterstrike ... anywhere between 50,000-70,000 at one time ... this list is indeed BS.

It's a problem when nobody makes money. How long are people going to play Warcraft and Counter Strike?

The games have tons of longevity. It's one of the reasons people like PC gaming so much. You spend $40 one of the best PC games and you can play for years. Even the very best console games would be hard pressed to keep you playing for a month. I know I still play Civ 3 (own Civ 4 but find myself coming back to 3 the most), RTCW: ET (this one was free), Warcraft 3, Neverwinter Nights, Guild Wars, Hearts of Iron 2 and a few others but I still buy new games for both consoles and PC.

I really wish more of the games I bought had as much longevity. If developers knew they couldn't make so much money by just shoveling out short games maybe we would see more quality games.
