Which games absolutely blew you away the first time you played them in terms of visuals.

For me it was B-K, DK64, and B-T. Rare could work wonders with the N64.

It's too hard for games to impress now, with videos and screenshots of games not coming out for a year-and-a-half overshadowing everything else.

Wolfenstein 3-D. Made the jump from 2D to 3D. Biggest advancement ever. Doom was shortly after Wolfenstein 3-D and made the FPS genre and 3D programming popular.

For the n64...it would have tobe Majora's mask or Banjo tooie.

For the GC either that star wars game or Re4

ps2 Okami :P. Say what you want about the technical aspects of it's graphics....I just found it to be the most visually appealing game.

Dungeon Master (1987, Atari ST)

I was also blown away by Alien Versus Predator on the Atari Jaguar back in 1994. Watch that and keep in mind that Doom was released in 1993.

Mortal Kombat also looked amazing back when it was released in the Arcades.

Mario 64 and Gears. The first time you played Mario, it was like a window into what games were going to like from now on. With Gears, kind of the same. It was no longer a "representation" as much as an entirely viable alternate reality.

nfl 2k and world series baseball 2k1. nfl 2k was the first game i ever played on dc, it just blew me away. i dont think any other system was so far ahead of the previous systems as the dc was ahead of n64, ps1, and saturn in terms of graphics. and when i played wsb2k1, it was mind boggling, to this day sometimes i watch a replay and zoom in on mark mcgwires face, it was (and still is) unbeliveable that it looked so much like him, even the logos on the jerseys, the belt buckle, even the thread on the bill of the hats. soul calibur and allstar baseball 2000 for n64 come in close tied for second.

edit: i cant forget shenmue, omg so immersive, so detailed, so beautiful...breathtaking game. it would be a 3 way tie for first in my book.

Well, since I was really too young to really think anything of graphics when I first got my Nintendo 64 and Playstation 2... I'd say Jak 2. That game was amazing in its time.

The first game to ever blow me away graphically was Donkey Kong Country on SNES. I mean, who would've guessed that the SNES could do sprite-based 3D effects (that weren't Mode7). If Nintendo had figured out that they could do that at the beginning of the SNES's life-span, there would've been almost no competition from the Genesis.

Anyway, that was when I first started actually caring about graphics. Also graphically amazing was the Toy Story game on the SNES.

I was also impressed for a short while by the live action junk that was put out on the SEGA-CD, you know, Night Trap and all that. Oh well, I was young still.

I was blown away by a preview screenshot of a game for the DC. I can't remember the name of the game (never played it) but it involved hover-skateboard racing or something. Anyway, I couldn't believe that the character model had individual, detailed fingers and that the road had texture and didn't look completely flat.

I remember being in love with the cartoon graphics on LoZ:WW. I don't care what anyone says, that game is beautiful!

The last game I have been visually impressed with was RE4. I love how game designers learn how to really push a console toward the end of its life-span. I'm not all that impressed with all this next-gen stuff. I don't know, I think I'm jaded.

EDIT: Didn't mean for this to be so long - just got to reminiscing...

It still blows my mind how people can say Gears of War. Its really not that impressive if you had ever played PC games before Gears came out. Also the fact that its enviroment was virtually the most unimpressive thing I have seen, 10 foot wide corridors, no thanks. Go play Farcry on highest settings on PC and look how huge the enviroment is. MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE. With that said: Farcry.

Halo on the original Xbox was graphically stunning for the time when it was released. I thought it was the best game I'd ever seen to that point, much prettier than the Unreal engine games that were out around the same time.

Well for me..:

N64 - Mario 64 and PD (mario was my first n64 game and holy **** it blew away my sega)
Pc - Farcry (i bought it almost as soon as it came out, b4 it made it big, andI hadnt heard any info prior.. keep in mind it was also b4 doom3, halflife 2 ect.)
Psp - Just in general when i started my first game i was surprised.

Other than that i havent been too impressed, i was actually expecting more from next gen consoles (not playing too much ps3) and vista hasnt shown any good realeasedgames.

Phantasy Star:Master System - It really impressed me

Panorama Cotton: Mega Drive - Jaw-dropping, best looking Mega Drive game, hands down

Panzer Dragoon II: Zwei: Saturn - It was breath-taking

X-Men vs. Street Fighter: Saturn - Seeing Juggernaut coming in and out in all it's full animated glory was a big wow for me at the time, and I knew the time of real heavy Arcade-perfect ports had arrived.

Jet Set Radio Future Dreamcast - It's still a beauty to look at
