@happyduds77: Did I say it was bad? did I say that? No. And there are other examples of boring missions, that was just one instance. that's why I said "for instance." And I figure that since a lot of people consider GTAV to be among the best it'd be appropriate to talk about it in particular.

@getyeryayasout: Never said they didn't do that. Just saying that from what I have seen (mainly GTAIV and V, I haven't really played the PS2 ones) they aren't the"kings of the open world genre."

Also just because a game is revolutionary doesn't mean it's best. No one can really doubt that Ocarina of Time changed gaming, but it's far from the best Zelda (although it's still a great game).

@TheGuardian03: The thing that bothers me about GTAV at least is that the atmosphere is so non serious and goofy that the fact that they make you "realistically" do menial tasks seems all the more ridiculous. This is not a reality based world (okay it is, but you get what I'm saying) so why should I ever do anything like move freaking crates around or go tow cars with a slow ass truck?

Also yeah the gunplay is nothing like Max Payne 3's, although I think that's because MP3 allocated most of its programming to shooting and the physics of that while GTAV does more than that.

Trevor was an entertaining character and there was a lot of stuff to explore on the map as far as cool sites and what not. Watchdogs is probably better graphically, runs smoother. The gameplay there is more to it. It still is a bunch of random stuff scattered around the map. Sleeping dogs was a lower budget watchdogs imo. It's ubisoft and rockstar and they basically have pluses and minuses to each. There really isn't much alternative stuff. I'm not a big fan of GTA either but I like open world games and driving. They just could do so much better with it.

Watchdogs is 1st in series but it's still typical ubisoft blandness. I still like it better than gta in a lot of ways. Developers need better game design and story telling instead of worlds for the masses. Watchdogs does some pretty high tech stuff but it's bland. The mini games are better than rockstar though.

@turtlethetaffer: There's only one Yoga mission, the tow truck missions are all optional and you don't even have to do them, the plane mission is the only one that is like that in the entire game (unless you buy the other airfield) 8/10 missions in GTA V are awesome

I didn't say you said it was bad, but now that I read your post again you're kind of implying it.

Anyway you wonder why GTA is considered the king of open world games when you can do such things like rappelling down a building from a helicopter to take someone as a hostage and shoot your way out and then fly away with a helicopter while multiple enemy helicopters are trying to take you down. Oh and by the way that was just one instance.

Whats annoying is the gunplay is designed for you with the heavy aim assist option as default and the way they want you to play it, without it youre fucked and have to adjust to free aim which i did. With aim assist the game plays itself.

They also lied when they said it would have max payne 3 shooting like gameplay. Its nowhere near the greatness of mp3 gameplay. It has better characters and a more enjoyable story though. Which made me keep playing it. Also **** mopping the floor mission. The next gta needs to have better mission design cause i enjoyed playing around more than playing the story mode. Overall good game but overrated.

i've never taken the mopping the floor approach to that mission.

@happyduds77: Nope never implied it was bad, just that it seems to me right now that there are more of the less exciting missions than the exciting ones. When the game is good, it's awesome, but there seems to be a lot of missions where you don't do anything very exciting.

Rockstar is overrated anyway . I had played GTA V few months ago on my friend's console and couldn't get into it . I was like "So this is what was hyped by people .? ... Shame" .

On other hand I hated AC 3 , it was piece of sh*t game and because of that I refused to play AC4 : Black Flag , until now . And I must say , it is much better game in terms of everything . True AAA title .

GTA>>>>>Any other open world game.

No open world game comes close in attention to detail like a GTA game. Go play San Andreas and you will understand.

I agree a bit that GTA5 had lots of cool and very well created things, but alot of the time there wasnt beefy high action gameplay sessions in those missions (and i took the rout of the most action possible, no stealth, possible for at the missions that allowed you to chose) and it felt like alot of pre-work before into the mission for very little of short action.

Also way to much driving. I beat the game in 22 hours and 10 of those were just driving back and forth. And to me there also wasnt that many side missions, so once i beat the actual story there wasnt really anything to do cuz i had also beaten the side missions as well (i was not trying to beat all the side missions).

easiest way to explain it to you. play the game. play as much of the game as you can; missions, side missions, doing whatever you can

then play any other game that can be compared to it and you notice everything that's missing that you took for granted in gta.

It's the staple name for open world sandbox games, ever since PS2/Xbox days with GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Granted, being a staple name doesn't necessarily mean it's the cream of the crop, but it does denote the trend of being a franchise people commonly think of when they think of open world sandbox titles. Just how saying JRPGs people might associate that with Final Fantasy, even though the last two Persona games are easily superior to anything that's been put out under the Final Fantasy name for the least few years.

The GTA games are extremely detailed and well thought-out. There's so many little details in those games that 90 % of the players will never find, yet Rockstar includes them anyway. No other open world game has accomplished anything close to what GTA V did.

It's not the king of open world.

GTA V had literally millions of buildings on the map yet I could only go inside maybe 10 in the entire game. Hell, you can't even go inside of the businesses that you buy.

What the f*ck can you even do besides drive/fly around and shoot at people after you complete the story? Same as every other GTA .

Rockstar needs to quit dicking around with the GTA franchise and make a new Red Dead already. And look into making a brand new title after that.

GTA is a waste of an open world, amazingly designed as they are. R* goes and creates this totally believable world, then packs it with stupid, superficial shit to do.

Exactly

There's no denying that they make detailed open worlds that feel alive. My biggest gripe is that I'm basically stuck outside driving/flying around and doing the same old sh*t whenever I'm not at my hideout or buying f*cking clothes.

How many times can you skydive out of a plane before it becomes a total bore? Seriously.

You could actually go inside of more places in San Andreas, a game that is 10 years old, than you could in GTA V.

This. I'll put any GTA city up against any other open world game. Yes, sometimes their mechanics are shit. yes, they have REALLY annoying missions every now and then, but I have yet to find any other open world game that has cities as fun to explore as the GTA games. They seem to know how to make that shit work.

Seriously?

Explore what?

I loved exploring the maps of Morrowind, Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas, etc.

Mainly because there was actual exploring to be done. Not this half assed shit like in GTA V where the exploration basically amounts to driving/flying to the top of Mt. Chiliad, looking at nothing but empty woods, then parachuting back down to the bottom.

The games have a very polish and detailed open world but other than that there isn't anything else all that special . Also the for the graphics after playing it on my xbox there nothing impressive about them only the altered screenshots on the internet were descent.

I think the problem with other open world games is that they don't put as much effort in polishing up the game by the developers. Look at watchdog we saw a incredible showcase a few years back but the game didn't turn out like people thought it would be. Ubisoft's Watchdog could have easily outdo Rockstar's GTA it if they invested more time in really polishing up their game and making it as detail as possible.

Hmm. I certainly don't consider it King. I would say something more like Morrowind. The world feels like it has been there for a millennium since there's so much lore. All of the NPCs have a lot to say. GTA games feel pretty shallow in comparison, actually.
