as for the good controls: that would be the autoaim.

As for Halo being overrated, well I think since it's extremely popular, a lot of "non-conformist" types hate it simply because of that reason-it's very popular. I personally think it's an average shooter. While halo 3 does have a good lobby system, the gameplay is too simple for my tastes.

mohfrontline

This is a trend that needs to stop. No blind statements calling gameplay in any action game "simple." Super Smash Brothers is as complicated as Halo 3, is as complicated as Counter-Strike. It's as complex as you make it. Become a five star general and compete with professional players in MLG. Then tell me how simple the gameplay is.
The game controls so well on a pad compared to pretty much any other FPS on a console, it's controls are even good for a PC standard. Plus KB/M isn't the end all/be all. alot of people prefer using a controller.foxhound_fox

Generally people "prefer" gamepads when they haven't spent much time with the keyboard and mouse for shooters.

to me, KB/M seems too much like a point and click adventure. except when you click, people die.

I like to think of the Halo series like I do with the Spiderman movies...

The first one, it was pretty awesome. I liked it a lot.

The second one, eh. It got old kind of fast.

The third one, wow it was bad. I couldn't even finish it (same for the movie). It was boring and just a really dull experience.

I would never call the Halo series the best series of all time, and I would never call any of these games the best of their genre, either. The first one had a fun campaign mode and fun online (I played the PC version though, I much prefer it to analog), but the other two just seemed kind of repetetive and just generally not fun. The story, well it was creative, but boring nonetheless. I never cared about anyone's death or what happened. I just kind of played it to finish it.

So yes, in my opinion, Halo is definitely overrated.

Hey if you pull a trigger on a gun, people also die. But it's not that easy right? You have to learn to play the game, learn the maps, how to efficiently kill someone, how to stay alive. And yes, a mouse is more accurate then gamepads and for me, fun is when all my controls work the way I want to and the mouse and keyboard give me that.

So while mouse is better at controlling FPSes and RTSes (and other genres) they are not easier to learn than a controller.

I can agree to to saying the Halo series is a great FPS, but to say it rivals some of the best made FPSs that eappeared on the PC, thats a bit out there.

when comparing CoD4 and Halo3 for me personally, i prefer Halo3. SP gets a big fat Tie in my book on both games but the MP stands out in Halo3 more, soley because of the online splitscreen.Utensilman
That and Halo3 has way more interesting gamemodes. It's just morefun to play with friends (highly recommended) or alone.

COD4 only has the search & destroy and Team Deathmatch gametypes which I like. The grenade spam in every single match is killing it for me.

Halo has grenade spam too but it doesnt bother me that much for some reason. Also The Matchmaking system in Halo is pure win imo. You can literaly feel that the game is getting harder with every rank you go up.

This is how look at it. When I played Halo 1 for the PC, I enjoyed it. The SP sucked and was completely boring in my opinion but the MP was fun for a few months. In the end I realized that I hate recharging energy, fake hit detection, game that feels like its in molasses sometimes and respawn. I prefer Socom over all shooters.

The game took elements from PC gaming and fused it into a console game, but TS was already a great shooter and I do not think Halo was as good as some people made it out to be at the time. Still a good game though, I just did not care for it after 3 months of playing. Same deal with 2 and 3, played them for about an hour and put the controller down.

Its become a primarily multiplayer series.

The first and second have overrated singleplayer.

Multiplayer is great.

The first had a great singleplayer, however people do exaggerate its impact on the genre.

I lean towards both sides.

On one hand- Its a great game

On the other- it has become a bit overrated in certain aspects.

All in all Its a great game that gets TOO much hype..... and TOO much hate.

If there weren't billion dollar advertising campaign, i don't think people would be so critical of Halo.

I also think more people would be less critical of Halo had it not been given some kind of holy crown for innovation. IT didn't innovate.

THat said I love Halo 3, 2 and Halo 1...and will continue to consider Bungie as a great dev until they themselves prove me otherwise.

I wouldn't go that far.

It definantly earned a spot....or atleast consideration

Assuming the gimmies are

Mario
Zelda
Metroid
Half LIfe

yada yada yada

Very few franchises can lay claim to the consistency of Halo.

or the competitive userbase(you have to go strictly PC shooters for that)

or the huge fandom(once again stricly PC games like WoW for that kind of stuff)

I think it would be hard to argue against it, as far as "Franchises" are concerned.

It's only been out there for two generations. The ones you mentioned above have been here for what, 20+ years?

That is consistency.

I'm not denying it's really earning a spot and all that, but no where near those you listed (and you forgot Final Fantasy!).

yes, with so much hype, people expect Halo to have the best graphics, and provide the most innovative gameplay. But its impossible for this to be all true. People have to understand that the original Halo was revolutionary on the console. It had a great story, and awesome gameplay. It also intertwined vehicle combat and first person shooting into a cohesive multiplayer form that resonated widely with console players. Halo was revolutionary on the console.

Halo3 really tries to give the old halo fans what they want. Good graphics, finished story, and improved multiplayer. Its not innovative because it keeps to its successful roots.

I sometimes look at my halo 3 screen and wonder why this game isnt looking as artistic as bioshock, or get the feeling that things are really similar to halo 2. But honestly, the fact that the halo games have stayed consistent doesnt stop them from being a great series. You may not have loved halo 3 as much, but you love halo 2, and you drooled over halo 1. Lets not forget that.

well that was yada yada yada

because honestly if you name Final Fantasy, then you must name Dragon Quest(for the work in Japan)

and then we honestly have to with what game deserves it and what doesn't

Resident Evil
Metal Gear Solid

both franchises you can make a case for and against

Warcraft is a given

System SHock is a given(because of How Bioshock just puts it up there)

i mean come on, we could name greatness all day....

What I meant by that is it's a good franchise with a very large fanbase, but I don't think Halo is in the same league as Mario, FF, Metroid etc etc because they have lasted the test of time, and with flying colors.

dude halo came out 7 years ago. There has been 3 iterations each selling over 8 million copies. If its not in the same league, it should be getting there in a couple of years.

well ok here is the way i saw it

I don't think he mean't Like at the very top of the list

because lets be honest, you have to be top tier franchises to be even in the same sentence as Mario, Zelda, FF as a franchise

Then there is the longevity factor

Then there is the part where they dominate there genre

Platforming, Action/Adventure, JRPG, etc

Huge fanbases

GOTY awards up the yin yang

I mean I don't think you could make a case for any FPS "Franchise" being in the same name. Mainly due to the consistant evoltion/Copy Cat work of the genre.

NO FPS really stands the test of time, they all begin to lose there luster...and in no way will the Halo FPS franchise stand the test of time for its gameplay...maybe its Rich Lore.

It's only two generations though, and I use two lightly of course. Lasting this long and still gaining/retaining the fanbase is incredible. It's quicly rising, that's for sure. But I still can't put it up there with those classic franchises.

Any time something becomes very popular there will always be people out there that hate it because they want to be different.Im sure there are people out there that honestly dont like the game but those people arent the ones bashing the game on messege boards over and over. Most of the people trashing halo are usually brand loyalists of other consoles.

It's not really people on GSpot who make me think it's overated. It's ignoramuses (ignorami?) I know in real life who spout crap like "OMG who still plays Counter-Strike, Halo is so much better", "Crysis has good graphics but is no match for Halo 3" and "Lol you're a nerd if you play PC games, I play Halo and that's cool". Also, there's the fact that Soulja Boy plays Halo. Eww.

I remember one kid at school said that "Halo started it all" and me and my two (gamer) friends turned to him in shock and awe and went "Are you ******* stupid?" and began to list a bunch of great FPS games (Doom, Half Life, etc etc)

It's statements like that which make it overrated.

Halo1: Fresh and a good game when it came out.

Halo2: Singleplayer was a boring tuberun. Multiplayer felt a little stiff and boring too. Aiming.....

Halo3: I only played the Beta that came with crackdown and it was a snorefest. Craphics did not improve in the final game -_-

Overall controls are okay but nothing like the second coming of Jesus Christ like some people(fanboys) think. (IMO)

Story is pretty bland. Main character is lack of imagination. Weapons are "ok". The game/series is pretty mediocre.

I had more fun with Red Faction 1 than with halo.

I've had a go of the first one on PC and I found no difference between it and any other generic shooter. I tried to find what set it apart but couldn't, the only explanation I could find was the constant ego boosting of having every NPC look up to you from the very start.

This was the game that apparently started it all, I saw nothing in it that hadn't been done many times in other shooters before it. In the end the only conclusion I can reach is Halo was a first big fish in a very small pond.

It's easly the best console developed FPS series on the market. It appeals to "hardcore" and "casual" gamers alike. It has fantastic online. The game controls so well that it rivals most PC FPS's, it even has a decent story for a FPS.

How the hell are these games considered overrated?

Then why does it require auto aim? Plus your statement doesn't even make sense. It controls so well on a console it rivals PC FPSes? What exactly are you trying to say?

Maybe its just my copy......but it doesn't have auto aim?

It does have autoaim. It also has a sticky reticle which will "stick" to players when you move over them, as well as bullets that will curve in the air, even when you're not using the needler.

yes, though you wont notice it as much compared to other games. every console shooter as atleast a bit of auto aim.

I had horrible Auto-aim issues in Team deathmatch COD4. an enemy walking behind a brick wall (didn't know he was there) and I'm starting to aim to the left all of the sudden. the direction the other guy is walking.

are you sure?

I've not played it recently, granted, but I don't remember any auto aim in the MP.

Infact I don't remember much auto aim in many games. The last games I remember seeing it was goldeneye and the airboat level of the orange box

Maybe auto aim is more subtle now
It does have autoaim. It also has a sticky reticle which will "stick" to players when you move over them, as well as bullets that will curve in the air, even when you're not using the needler. -Reggaeton-

yes, though you wont notice it as much compared to other games. every console shooter as atleast a bit of auto aim.

I had horrible Auto-aim issues in Team deathmatch COD4. an enemy walking behind a brick wall (didn't know he was there) and I'm starting to aim to the left all of the sudden. the direction the other guy is walking.

Turn off the AimAssist

lol didn't even know there was an option to turn it off in the game. thanks:)

If compared to a couple games that received 10/10 laugh then Halo is severely underrated ! :P

I think the current score is fine. But I do think it's overhyped.

I think it deserved a 9 or 8.5.

Go figure.

for me, fun is when all my controls work the way I want to and the mouse and keyboard give me that.bladeeagle

Depends on what you're looking for. For me, a controller being as comfortable as possible is more important than whether I miss a few headshots here or there. I'm not a pro gamer; I'm more concerned with having a good time than how I score.

Well that's it. I compete competively and that's why I need my mouse. I just can't use the controller for anything other than singleplayer games.

But yeah it's all down to preference and I prefer the mouse.

Second ^ ^ I think halo 3 deserves a 8.5 also.

It kept too much of the same formula, which is fine as long as you make the story, level design, graphics, gameplay features super polished. Halo 3 didnt deliver in many aspects. But its still a good game and deserves a high score. Just not above a 9.

Halo is overrated all it has is multiplayer and aliens.

Crysis is overrated all it has is graphics.

MGS4 is overrated all it has is cutscenes.

Zelda is overrated, its only good for the kiddies.

Actually every game that i dont like thats got good review scores and is popular is overrated ...
No i'm not being serious, just trying to point out the stupidity of calling something overrated
so far this gen the only shooter i thought even stood up against halo was gears and gears had alot of online issues (but it still owned) but halo 3 is alot of fun and for those saying "its too simple" stop cuz once u get to general or play 50s in mlg ull understand how hard it actually is.

I only thought it got more overrated as the series progressed. Halo 1 was definitely not overrated, it's still one of my favorite console FPS games. I think as the series progressed though, it was getting even more praise that the original for only making minor improvements apart from the online multiplayer components. Why'd they have to nerf the pistol too?

I thought COD4 rivaled both and doesn't it currently have more active players too?
