Because this is System wars. Also what is the 5th Uncharted game? 3 on PS3 and 1 of PSV is all that I've ever heard

double_a73

There was the little downloadable card game for PSV (may have been PS3 as well). It was just a £5 PSN release or something.

Why are the mario games separated by 2d/3d? They're the same ip. Oh, and those numbers are wrong for the most part.

You see it's very simple..

Forza Horizon (Xbox 360)

= Perfectly legitimate and appropriate sequel

Infamous 2 (PS3)

inFamous 2 Image

Infamous Second Son (PS4)

Killzone 3 (PS3)

But on the other hand..

Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)

Just curious? After all Nintendo just does 1980s rehashs correct? Idk what to call whatever the hell MS and Sony are doing, but its looks pretty similar and the fact that you call Nintendo out for putting out a sequel is garbage. Just look at the facts. I posted a couple franchise standings down below for comparison. What did I find? The numbers are extremly similar. This is including hand helds and console releases.

Lets compare this gen, last gen, and any announced games for next gen to get a good example. Bundles arent included, i was confused with which gen the DS, 3DS, PSP, and Vita were so I considered 3DS and Vita this gen, DS and PSP last gen for sake of argument, can be changed if needed.

  • Halo Games: 7 (5 this gen only)
  • Fable Games: 6 ( 5 this gen only)
  • Forza Games: 6 (4 this gen only)
  • Gears of War: 4 this gen only
  • Uncharted: 5 (3 this gen only)
  • Killzone: 6 ( 3 this gen only)
  • Resistance 5 (4 this gen only)
  • Mario Side Scrollers: 4 ( 2 this gen only)
  • Mario 3D platformers: 5 (2 this gen only)
  • Legend of Zelda:8( 4 this gen)
  • Metroid: 5 ( 3 this gen)
  • Pikmin 3 ( 0 this gen)

Bardock47

Well I will speak on the sony side since I know its exclusives better.

Yes sony has made a lot of sequels this gen, but they have also had new and unique games this gen like the last of us, journey, flower, beyond two souls, puppeteer, tokyo jungle, wonderbook book of spells, untold legends and quite a few more.

So you see while sony has made sequels they have also new and original games as well. While nintendo? They have been jerking off the same old franchises for 30 years now.....30 years of constantly year in and year out making franchise sequels, re-releases, re-makes, and spinoffs of the same games.

During the ds and wii era how many god damn mario games came out? A LOT. Look at just the new super mario bros games. New super mario bros, new super mario bros 2, new super mario bros wii, and now we have new super mario bros wiiu and new super mario bros luigi. And thats not counting the other like 5 mario series that ran right a long side it.

Nintendo rehashes because they do, what was the last original game they put out? Steel diver which retailers had to give away because no one wanted it? Wii music which no one wanted?

Its one thing to make sequels when you still make new content, but its another thing when all you do is sequels, re-releases, re-makes, and spinoffs and do absolutely nothing else.

Why did you make 2 categories for Mario? Mario is mario regardless of how it's presented.

The games you listed are very much of the same as much as 3D World is more 3D Land, so I fail to see how just being visually improved makes it more of a sequel. I mean reality is 3D World is as much a typical videogame sequel as Forza 5 is to Forza 4. Or how infamous 3 is very much going to probably be in line with Infamous 1 and 2.

Shadow Fall admittedly is taking a new direction for its level design, but new relative to just Killzone. Otherwise that game is definitely more console man shooting in a cinematic action game. 3D World definitely deserves flack after how forward thinking the Galaxy games were, but not enough that more Forza, more Killzone, and more Infamous aren't just as by the numbers sequel territory.

I think what makes gamers mad at NIN is they simply will not put out more powerful hardware,..and they will not put out more mainstream "adultish" type games , and they have an online system that is from 20 years ago. PLUS their choice of controllers seems to always be horrible. Should you follow everyone else OR do things your way? Sometimes I think follow. Mario,Zelda,Metroid,SSB,MarioKart, are good games..but lets give gamers a choice. Give gamers a reason to ONLY want YOUR system. Not make it a companion that gets very little play time. NIN use to be leaders...whats happened?

A simple question to prove you what is going on ...

How many new IPs Nintendo made the last 10-15 years and how many Sony ? And that question just ends your topic !

What if there are 5-6 Gran Turismo out there , sure you can call it rehashing for this individual title , though 6 Turismos since mid 90s are not that many comparable to 200+ mario titles that 150 of them are just bad  but anyways... How many first party good exclusives , NEW IPs in particular ,  you played on Nintendo systems comparabe to Sonys the last 15 years or so ?

Not even 1/10 .. Google and youll see what i mean.

Rehashing and milking are not interchangable terms.

However, no one should deny that Mario is milked because there is plenty evidence of that. But how can you blame them if they sell enough? If anything, if it bothers people so much, then they should be blaming the market and not Nintendo since any company with any actual business sense would do the same thing if they had a character that is as iconic as Mario. In addition, it doesn't help that Mario has a universal appeal and therefore is capable of being applied to a multitude of genres unlike Master Chief for exmple. (You just can't imagine Master Chief playing Tennis or Football can you? :P)

And while I agree and applaud Sony for supporting new IPs it doesn't excuse the double standards of people when most new IPs in general are mostly comprised of old game ideas wrapped up and repackaged as a new franchise. However, do I think there is anything inherently wrong with this? No, not really. But I also don't think there's anything wrong with the way Nintendo does things either.

Furthermore, Nintendo does make new IPs, but just because they aren't well known doesn't mean they don't exist.

Here's a random list for anyone who wants to take a look at the new IPs both published or made since 2001.

Geesh they had to go back to gamecube days to make that list look significant. And then lump in 3DS games? How about Wii...all by itself how does that list look? Lot's of lame "wii-game" titles and I don't count those as new IP's.

Compare that to Sony wh introduces MANY new IP's alongside their old ones on the PS3. Now that's what gamers want.

Or how about this...createa  console that can allow third parties to make up like on the 360.

Nintendo does neither. THAT'S the problem. I'm pretty sure people would complain less if they could play GTAV on the Wii U.

Rehash franchise for 20 years =/= multiple release within a gen. Who gives a damn anyway, they do whatever they want with their franchise. As long as it sells, they can milk the hell out of it.

Pretty sure it's because they've been using the same characters and types of games since they became a company.

Right. I don't even think the formerly mentioned titles are rehashes in any negative sense of the word, I just find it to be very contradictory to right off the Nintendo title sequels as mere HD updates to old games yet at the same time praise other sequels that are no more different. I'd even argue that the jump from 3D Land to 3D World will be even more noticeable, and the "3D" sub series is very distinct from other 3D and 2D Mario games to begin with. Why buy a WiiU when you can play Mario 3D Land or Donkey Kong Country on 3DS? Well I'm not sure, why buy a PS4 or Xbox One when I can play Forza, Infamous, and Killzone on the PS3/Xbox 360?

Yeah it's a double standard really. I think Nintendo should get a bit of a free pass in some cases because their franchises remain more unique compared to the rest of the industry than the franchises produced by Microsoft and Sony.

Yeah but the formula within their franchises lack the trade mark risk taking they used to do. Or when they do, super mario galaxy, it's very rare. Even then you still play mario and its a sand level...grass level...bowser boss...star collecting.

Are we not counting all the games because there are 16 original Zelda games not including remakes. 4 of them between ds and wii

Mario had 3 side scrollers off the top of my head and 2 3d between ds and wii.

Thing with Nintendo is that they throw Marios name at the beginning of other games like Mario Strikers, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis.

All companies milk franchises that make them money, it's just smart business to supply consumers with what they demand.

Bardock47

True dat my man.

Make no mistake, I love all of these series listed here (except for Forza), so I have no problems with continuing sequels in an ongoing franchise I love from any developer, so I'm not complaining. But people who attempt to single out Nintendo are either skewing the facts for the sake of being negative because...well I honestly I couldn't even begin to try and figure out the brain of someone who does that...or they're just remarkably close-minded and/or uneducated on the subject.

But, oh well. As long as great games keep being made available for those that love them then I personally believe that that's all that matters.

not really rehashing when the games have different stories and enviroment and villains even if they do have the same characters and gameplay everything else is build from the ground up. While i can't say the same for Mario Side scrollers... even the music is often taken from the original one. I'll give you points for trying but nintendo started on mario and will die on mario.. while xbox doesn't really have a lot of variety in their games they where pioneers in arcade console games in the present time and Playstation has the biggest variety of 1st party games between the consoles.. including weird games, not to mention they have full 3rd party support. and pc well.. PC has everything even if it's the illegal way.

But, oh well. As long as great games keep being made available for those that love them then I personally believe that that's all that matters.

bbkkristian

No skewing whatsoever, Nintendo is still using franchise from 30 years ago, FACT!

Nobody is denying that. It is fact.

Exactly. It is a fact. And an irrelevant one at that. Especially in context to my post he was responding to. So what exact point that kid is trying to make I assure you that I have zero idea.

Because low IQ PlaySlaves and XBots think Mario Kart and Mario Tennis are the same franchise.

Because it's Nintendo. No matter how much they change the core gameplay over the same foundation, no matter how many new IP's they invest time and money in and risk throwing it all away, and no matter how much they prove themselves time and time again commercially and critically, some people just cannot see past their engrained cynicism.

Because they are the same franchise. I think you should try to understand what the word franchise means.

All of the big 3 rehash to a degree, so I wouldn't really target any of them over it. Nintendo's issue though is that they are very lacking in the third party as far as their consoles go, which means the consoles are prone to game droughts.

This. Its more apparent with Ninty because there's nothing in between their releases.

Then allow me to rephrase it: Because low IQ PlaySlaves and XBots think Mario Kart and Mario Tennis are the same series.

But regardless, the point still stands.

BTW, you are missing the point OP, the rehashing isn't the issue, it's that all they do is rehash. Let's see outside of that sony gave us...

Infamous
Heavy Rain
Beyond
TLOU
Puppeteer
Journey
Soul Sacrifice
Gravity Rush/daze w/e it is
MAG
LBP

etc

This is along with getting most major multiplats. Now how many new core IPs did nintendo bring?

Just to ask, why is Pikmin included in the Nintendo list, but not Pokemon (probably the biggest offender)?

Not that I really care, loved me some Super Mario Galaxy 2.

7th Generation they had: Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Another Code/Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, and Fossil Fighters.

Edit* They had a lot more but you might not consider them core titles.

Xenoblade isn't in the Xeno franchise Nintendo named it that to get more interest and to respect the director it was originally going to be called Monado: Beginning of the World.

Another Code/Trace Memory is an adventure game. Fossil Fighters is a Pokémon clone developed by 4 different companies with one of them being Nintendo SPD.

Nintendo has alot more IPs to rehash only becuase they have been around that much longer. In 20 years Sony and Microsoft will look exactly the same. It is really quite obvious.

I honestly do not see a problem with it. If you give the fans what they want good for you.

Bardock47
1.List your "6" fable games. 2.Uncharted had 5 games this gen. 3. Killzone had 4 4.Metroid had 4 5. Zelda had 5 6.Resistence has 5.

But MS and Sony haven't been rehashing for decades, also Sony and MS franchise itterations are much more different than the next and have plots that are built to span multiple games.
