Long answer: There are alot of causal gamers in Europe, and most of them game the console, especially in southern european countries. The hardcore mostly play PC, but some also play console.
Causals mostly buy the "standard" choise, they don't invest alot of time investigating into the options on the console marked but just follows the mainstream.
Sony has made a big deal of building a name for themselves in the console marked, like everywhere else in the world, and this was helped alot with the total domination with both the PS1 and PS2. Nintendo and MS (especially MS) haven't lead a so agressiv marketing campaign in Europe, leaving them alot behind the last gens in the visibility in the public zone.

Last gen, and alittle still, causals (especially in southern europe) connect consolegaming exclusively with the PS brand. MS has gotten somewhat succesful out of the gate and made an appearence of themselves in Europe, but they still are hardly even advertising and making campaigns (if at all).

The fact that hardcore mostly goes PC, and PS is considered synonymous with console gaming in most of the causal marked, MS isn't considered an option for most of the people who are potential costumers.

PS3 is outselling X360 in most European countries- by a substantial margin in places.

so how IS PS3 doing so well?

with the lower pricepoint & superior library of games the Xbox360 SHOULD have Europe in lockedown.

is BluRay a factor?

is console reliability a factor?

are many Europeans loyal to the Playstation brand?

blue_hazy_basic

Maybe cause 360 games don't appeal to us, i hate the way 360 owners from NA have an attitude that if they like it we will, we just prefer PS, it's simple

you pretty summed up lemmings but not all x360 gamers here in NA

So 1 person speaks for all of Europe now? Funny that I play with alot of people from Ireland and the UK on XBL ...

I have found him to be one of the more offensive poster towards NA and the 360 on this forum. Just have to ignore him.

European gamers have different tastes. For example JeuxFrance.com gave COD4 an 17/20(8.5/10) and Halo 3 a 16/20 (8.0/10).

I think the real question is: why is it doing comparitivly worse in the NA region?

And Why is Xbox 360 doing comparitivly worse in Japan and PAL regions?

People keep saying "Europe is PS3 land!" but they only say that because it's selling much better in the PAL region (and japan region when you look at how much it SHOULD be selling in the region by region percentagewise scope of things.) than the NA region. NA needs a price dropped PS3 (people in NA are generally all about getting a bargain, and getting whatever is good enough for less) and some exclusive games to catch up with japan and PAL numbers.

Same with X360 in NA, it really SHOULD be selling as well in the PAL region as it is in the NA region, but it's not and that's why people think the US and Canada are all Xbox fanboys. IMO MS needs to solve it's RROD problem IMMEDIATLY, and possibly come out with a smaller, sleeker looking console (people in PAL regions are generally all about weather they feel it's the "authentic", "quality" console or not, and the Xbox 360 seems sort of generic and very unstable to them) with some extra features to please Europeans. Japan i think, will never want x360 and i honestly don't know why.

Why is that? I'm not in the business of selling game systems. So why should I care what strategy sells in Europe? That's up to Sony Execs, and what they are doing obviously works for Europe. And no one on here can answer the question, not Americans, not even Europeans themselves. So why worry about it?

If thats true its brand loyalty and nothing more, so if sony doesn't get the goods this gen there screwed next gen.

I would say that reliability has a huge factor in it, and the fact that many people don't like Microsoft??

It isn't, Sony just got a sales spike because of the price drop right before the holiday season. The x360 Pro has had the same price point (at retail) since like forever, so when Microsoft decides to drop the price their sales will go up also.

I don't know what people are smoking but the PS3 ius cheaper at least herein Canada.

Xbox360= $399, $60 for Xbox Live, $30 for controller charge. this equals $490.( I would include the HD-DVD player or the wireless adapter which both are $100.)

PS3 40GB $399, PS3 80GB $499. YOU FORGOT THE INCLUDE A HDMI CABLE, DUAL SHOCK CONTROLLER AND HEADSET.

Clearly the PS3 40GB is $90 cheaper.

thageneral3

HDMI cable $4, dualshock, not necessary, and even with all 3 u listed it would probably still be cheaper

the HDMI cable is only included in the elite model, so you can eliminate the HDMI cable from the 399 model

I'd imagine the Blu Ray drive and the brand loyalty in Europe are helping a lot. The 2007 holiday season was perfectly laid out for the PS3 to do well as well (the 360 had been a very popular present for the previous two years meaning many already had it, the Wii was completely unavailable, and the 40gb SKU was certainly more appealing to the average consumer).

As far as I've seen, USA, UK, Ireland and Australia have a tendency to favour the X360, and most other places favour the PS3. This leads me to think that there's a cultural element here, that English speaking countries tend towards the 360 because it's games are engineered for the american market(and other english speaking countries pick up quickly on american tendancies due to language and shared media).

Yea i didn't mean all NA 360 owners, it's just whatever games people like it's their opinion, 360 doesn't get F1, tekken, resistance and many other games that is popular here in europe so thats maybe why aswell

I can see F1 for sure, but why would Resistence appeal to someone in France more than Halo 3 or Bioshock?

Because Halo3 and Bioshock is on a system that breaks too often... i have a feeling Europeans are less tolerant of this than Americans. Also Playstation is a very strong brand over there, and for some reason Singstar is a rediculous hit there too. Its sold like 7 million units or something crazy like that. I think their tastes are more towards sony type games, less first person shooters too.

Maybe a fair amount of Europeans don't care that they can't sing? No, wait we have those here too. They go on American Idol. They must just not play games. Go figure.

I believe the reason the 360 isn't doing as well in the majority of Europe as the PS3, may be because of the success of PC gaming. Whereas Lemmings here rave about the great Mass Effect, Europe is putting The Witcher (PC) on a golden stand. Also, take into account most of the 360's great FPSs (Bioshock, Call Of Duty 4, Halo 3 possibly, Gears Of War) are available in a better form (or in the near future) for the PC, a major market in the videogame industry over there.

The PS3 offers games that the PC doesn't, simply put, in comparison to the 360.

Thats easy, in europe PC gaming is huge. Why buy an xbox 360 when you can play those games on your PC. PS3 has great exclusives that will never appear on PC. That's why I bought a ps3.

The PS3 launch in Europe was nowhere near as strong as it was in the US and Japan. Remember all those near-empty lines with people waiting for the PS3 in Europe, while people were getting shot while lining up for a PS3 in the US? Nopw, turns out the 360 is beating the PS3 in the US, while the PS3 has an edge over the 360 in Europe. Talk about a reversal. Just goes to show that we cannot predict the future when you look at the video games industry. :P

Man F Micro$oft, Look at the PC world, they wanna own everything. Microsoft Office is basically the only thing out there, The government made Microsoft give Macintosh money so Microsoft would not be a monopoly (this is a fact, go look it up). Microsoft just rapes you all over, why do people call it M$, not because its a cool looking "S". They took it all the way down to the console, the 360 is garbage and Microsoft is still trying to corner the market.......dont get me started, I can go on for days about Micro$oft!!!!

The PS3 is actually cheaper then the XBox 360 is certain countries in Europe. The other reason is Europeans love Blu-Ray for some reason and they've always favored Japanese game consoles. I'm not really surprise. Probably the same reason why the PS3 has been failing in the U.S. The 360 just needs a price drop in Europe and things will start to even out a bit.

I think the PS3 will start to do better in NA than it's doing, and will perform like in the rest of the world, but only after titles like Gran Turismo, Resistance 2, KZ2, which appeals a lot to their taste are released. Also, titles that appeals to almost everyone like LBP, and series with fans all over the world like Final Fantasy and God of War will have that effect.

This is why I own all 3 game consoles and rarely buy PC games. Most of the games I want to play that are on the PC are on the game consoles.

It's in the name. Blu-Ray sounds cooler, softer, more futuristic and blue is the most common favorite color. HD-DVD in comparison sounds like something stuck in the past. :P
In Europe the average screen is much smaller than in the USA.
Anyway i doubt it has much to do with price, other than that all three are affordable now.

Well take into consideration that Europe is a huge PC market. Many 360 games are offered on PC as well (many of the AAA ones too). PS3 and Wii exclusives will most likely never make their way to PC.

So if you like power, have the dough, and like the games on PS3 and already are a PC gamer then you're most likely going to go with a PS3 over a 360 since there is no point in buying a console for games you can buy cheaper for your PC.

Because the Xbox hype train only worked in the U.S.

"Finish the Fight"

"Believe"

"2007 is the best year in gaming history"

"PS3 a bust"

EDIT: I'm not trying to stereotype, I just think MS's marketing worked really well in their homeland.

Most of us americans fall for anything. Not surprised my freinds who knew barely anything about gaming bought the xbox360. All they do is play madden or nba games. Then my 1 freind who plays games besides sports games had his xbox 360 broken twice. Atleast he got the 4 months free of live.

I don't know her's what poped in my brains as some subjects of why Asian and European still buying PS3.

Healthy Food

Brain Activity

Emotional Health

Loyalty

Japanese eat fresh fish and vegetables all day without being drowned in nonnatural chemicals.Europeans generally eat better than NA as well.

Japan people have better emotional health. I think the depression rate and stress level is very very low compared to the US.

Halo 3 will probably be ported to the PC, other than that, most people have no interest in playing those other games. I dont...

That's because Playstation is more popular in Europe than Xbox.

It is a combination of things sir. If I had to pick one however, i'd have to go with the hardware quality. You see here, we will throw money at problems to fix it. There, people don't necessarily have the luxury. And while this can explain what has been keeping 360 sales down, it doesn't explain why PS3 sales there continue to increase at a steady pace. That explanation, i'm afraid, is a mystery to me.

However, think of it this way. If PS3 sales have been doing this well internationally without a major-flagship must own game under its belt, imagine how the PS3 will do when it does have it/them??

Dayum, you are right. PS3 = Audi, or Nissan if you are fron Japan.....360 = Ford (Found On Road Dead) RRoD

Off topic, but you know nothing of the auto industry. This may have been true at one point, but US cars kick European car but in reliability http://www.autoblog.com/photos/j-d-power-2007-vehicle-dependability-study/346679/

so how IS PS3 doing so well?

Because Europeans arent cheap.

BMW, Volvo, MB, Ferrari, Masserati, Peugeot, Renault etc.. that tell us something about taste.

Europe wants to spend money and doesn't care about value or reliability? Thats what that says to me.

Yes because the inferior technology and high failure rate of the 360 demonstrates value and reliability

I think the depression rate and stress level is very very low compared to the US.

real45

Aren't the stress and suicide rates in Japan and Korea some of the highest in the world?

I was referring to the auto industry, not the 360. I could understand if people aren't buying 360's because of reliability issues. I was just saying his auto industry analogy was TOTALLY off base.

My 360 has been running fine since launch and I own 2 Japanese cars (Accord and RX8 ), so not sure why I'm even in this conversation lol.

PS3 is outselling X360 in most European countries- by a substantial margin in places.

so how IS PS3 doing so well?

with the lower pricepoint & superior library of games the Xbox360 SHOULD have Europe in lockedown.

is BluRay a factor?

is console reliability a factor?

are many Europeans loyal to the Playstation brand?

maabus99

Maybe cause 360 games don't appeal to us, i hate the way 360 owners from NA have an attitude that if they like it we will, we just prefer PS, it's simple

you pretty summed up lemmings but not all x360 gamers here in NA

So 1 person speaks for all of Europe now? Funny that I play with alot of people from Ireland and the UK on XBL ...

I have found him to be one of the more offensive poster towards NA and the 360 on this forum. Just have to ignore him.

Grow up, seriously, 360 is great system but i'm just giving an opinion, i hope your not crying or anything lol but seriously though just cause i've stated opinion doesn't give you the right to think you know me, "offensive poster towards NA and the 360" lol. Seriously that was just childish, i just give 1 point, i've never stated 360 is crap and worthless or anything like that or never talk about NAmericans
