[QUOTE="AHUGECAT"]God of War set the precedent though. God of War is the best hack-n-slash game ever (well, 2nd best, next to Part II). Only problem is that they are too easy (even on God Mode), so hopefully III will be harder.

AHUGECAT

No it isn't. Devil May Cry set the bar, and further set it out of GoW's reach with DMC3. Plus, Ninja Gaiden stomps all over GoW.

The GoW games are good, but they are nothing worth writing home about. They are enjoyable for a single playthrough to get the story and taste of action... and that's about it.

Games weren't ripping off DMC left and right when it came out - God of War is better in every way (IMO). Now I love DMC (look at my avatar) but GOW is better. God of War games are an adrenaline rush that is fun from beginning to end. God of War III is the only game on the PS3 that I am actually jealous of.

With Ninja Gaiden, it has the same problem DMC (and many other Japanese slashers do) - bad camera angles. They fixed this in Black but I didn't play Black first. Yes they do require some skill but I still found them relatively easy, but GOW is by far the easiest even on God Mode.

Err yes, games WERE ripping of DMC left right and centre. DMC revolutionised hack and slash action adventure game with combos, cancelations, and air hanging. GOW gameplay is bogus compared to DMC3. You will always find insane combo videos of DMC, but never for GOW. DMC requires rediculous amount of skill in order to do variation of combos. Ninja Gaiden added fluidity to way the character moves.Camera is a minor problem in DMC and same with Ninja Gaiden. All you do in NG is reset the camera by clicking in one the analogs, same with DMC. I will give my hats off to GOW for its story and **** but DMC and NG are generations ahead of GOW in terms of gameplay.

Funny how many people think GoW invented the hack N slash genre or actually it is more sad then funny. Heck there was hack N slash games in the arcades in the early 80s. Let me guess GoW created greek mythology also?

rybe1025

gameplay mechanics are similar and to a certain extent the artistic approach is similar, people didnt say GOW invented the Hack'N'Slash genre..

The fact one is a bastardization of Greek mythology and one is an interpretation of a 14th Century Italian masterpiece of literature?

Dante's Inferno is heavily inspired by GoW. It's apparent more than most other cases. From play design to even art direction. But that doesn't mean DI won't be unique and fun :).

Since when was GOW the granddaddy of Hack and Slash games? It's the most ... "casual" hack n slash game, in the sense aas the most easy, and visually appealing. It's hardly the best.

The only thing that's similiar to me, is the amounts of gore.

Cows are a strange breed, no one complained about Uncharted being a Tomb Raiderripoff, no one complained about Uncharted 2 being a Gears rip off with jumping.

Its obvious because its not PS3 exclusive and wasnt made by Japanese company so its not a rip off its an innovative game.

[QUOTE="blazndragon0"] DMC did indeed set the bar, but Ninja Gaiden? I'd give GOW the edge over that..

foxhound_fox

Both DMC and NG require skill to beat. GoW does not.

I disagree the God of War games are fun action adventure games and have great amount of replay value. I beat God of War about 3 times and the second one about 6 times.

JangoWuzHere

Good for you. Everyone I know who has played them has only been able to play them through once. Playing them any more for us seems to ruin the experience.

Their replay value is low, when you look at what the game contains. At least with DMC, you have the ability to go back to each new level and try for better scores. The only thing that changes in GoW is difficulty and costumes. And none of the costumes are worth the time to unlock, especially in the first game.

Skill doesnt make it better Shinobi on the ps 2 required a lot more skill then both of those games you mentioned. Gow of war is about its presentation and how the story just flows.

[QUOTE="Trinners"]Just wondering, what makes you think that Dante's Inferno won't be a bastardization of the Divine Comedy (Inferno)? Dante never had a scythe. Will virgil be in the game? Will lucifer actually be a boss, even though he can't move? Riding on demons wasn't in the original poem and it's in the game. I'm pretty sure Dante's inferno will trash the literature that it's based on just as God of War trashed greek mythology.

This doesn't necessarily mean that dante's inferno will be bad though.

foxhound_fox

The developers have admitted to wanting to properly recreate the atmosphere and presentation of Dante's work in game form. Some alterations will take place... but nothing on the scale of GoW. They want to maintain the structure of the literature, while taking creative strives to make the transition between mediums as unbumpy as possible. Jaffe just took what he liked from Greek mythology and made it into something it really isn't.

AHUGECAT

Out of the big three (GoW, DMC and NG), GoW ranks the lowest. It is a well-made game, yes, but it fails to match up in terms of sheer skill-based gameplay. Yeah, high production values give it some serious edge, but its hack-n-slash gameplay that requires no skill to execute, keeps it out of the league of DMC and NG.

And, did you play the non-Special Edition of DMC3? Because that game is beyond "hard." There isn't enough patience in the world to get most people through it on the normal level of difficulty.

what do you mean GOW ranks the lowest? it has the best scores out of the the three series'. And the normal edition of DMC3 isn't hard at all, I beat it on dante must die without too much trouble.

God of War is a masterpiece whether you like it or not. Perfect pacing, amazing graphics, flawless soundtrack and a great combat system to boot.

Stringerboy

Not entirely. Considering GOW is a dial a combo system and that NG is a dial a combo system too, anyone with half a brain could tell you that NG gameplay TRASHES GOW gameplay. GOW combat doesnt even require any skill, hence why you will never find combo videos on it. Only combo videos you will see is Kratos milking a magic spell. GOW doesnt have the cancelation techniques of DMC, combo cancelations, and even the depth of DMC combat, and lets not even get to NG, because anyone who says GOW combat>NG combat should just quit gaming. In conclusion, DMC and NG are generation ahead in terms of gameplay compared to GOW. Dont gimme stuff like amazing graphics and sound track because when you play a game, the key element you focus on is gameplay, and the core gameplay for these games are combat, in which where GOW lacks most.

God of war is consistently fun. Ghost fish, the underground zombies and the swimming sequences were the worst parts about ninja gaiden. But a very good game nonetheless. Fighting chess pieces in dmc3 and backtracking in dmc4 was also annoying. I've just found that the design in god of war has been the most consistent.

This subject has been the cause for some heat since trailers for Dante's Inferno first hit the net... But realistically, don't ALL games sort of "copy" each other? You could say that every game ever released copied Mario just because video games are all really just run, jump, hack, slash... It's the storylines, design, mood, and control that make a good game. My instincts tell me Dante's Inferno will "feel" a lot like God of War. So what? If a formula works, run with it. Right? I would rather them be inspired by God of War to step it up and raise the bar than to be influenced by some horrible title. Whether games copy each other or not is kind of irrelevant. A good game is a good game... And Dante's Inferno LOOKS like it's going to be a masterpiece. Although I do feel like the first Devil May Cry on PS2 (As old as that game is becoming) still trumps most other games of its kind in terms of the feel and the fighting controls... It just feels awesome. And it came out so early in that console's life... Crazy to think about. Anyway... Of course the bar is raised... There are thousands of games out there both good and bad, and thousands of different people with different tastes... With that flooded of a market they wont please EVERYONE................................ But It sure looks like they'll please me :P

I'm glad this game "reminds" us all of God of War because the more awesome games released the better. Now if only more game companies would be inspired by prior formulas... MAYBE THEY WOULD RELEASE BETTER GAMES. This is how good art is made. Gotta be inspired by SOMEthing right?

In all fairness, we have seen very little of DI gameplay. Agreed, that very little looked a lot like GoW. But there again, Dead Space looked like a RE4 clone at first, but it managed to offer some interesting elements here and there (the use of gravity powers, vertical and horizontal shooting, limbs-ripping, zero gravity gameplay) that made the game worth it by its own. Having such a strong team behind DI, I expect the same to happen here. Besides, a good game "inspired" by GoW's gameplay is always welcome, isn't it? ;)

lol, the friggin scithe anymations are exactly the same as the Blades of Chaos. he even "throws" the scithe into a wall, letting it extend like it were a rope, and "pulls" himself into the wall

How's travelling through the 9 circles of Hell, fighting all kind of demons and embodyments of sin a "ridiculous concept for a game"? It sounds like an excellent premise for a videogame to me.

well, the fact that it's based on a piece of lit that has absolutely no fighting in it AT ALL... At least with Greek mythology all the fighting makes sense, because that's pretty much all Greek myths are about.

Wow. I think I am starting to build an immunity when it comes to cows jarating be off. I guess it is because I've been here for a sorta long time. I will hopefully be getting DI day one. If I can say one thing that it tops GoW in with the very little footage we've seen, it has to be the environment and atmosphere.

since we're on the subject of rip-offs or games with an obvious influence:

Dante's Inferno(different characters & setting), Castlevania(different character & setting), X-men Origin(different character & setting), Ninja Blade(different character & setting), Vikings(different character & setting), Conan(different character & setting), Heavenly Sword(different character & setting) is to God of War what...

Quantum(chick w/ sword and moveable covers), DarkSector(glaive), Uncharted(platforming), Army of Two(co-op focused), Wanted: Weapons of Fate(bullet manipulation), Dark Void(vertical cover) is to Gears of War

Try God/Titan mode and then get back to me on how easy those games are. Kratos' character isn't really a debatable thing. They did a great job giving Kratos an interesting background and incentive to do what he's doing. Most action games throw character depth and story aside, so what God of War does with it's characters is actually really great.

They did a great job giving Kratos an interesting background and incentive to do what he's doing. Most action games throw character depth and story aside, so what God of War does with it's characters is actually really great.

Square, Square, Triangle, Evade or Triangle, Triangle, Triangle, evade((on the more powerful but slow targets). That's all it takes.

[QUOTE="aaronmullan"]God of War - Dante's Inferno Gears of War - Quantum Simple.

Quantum actually rips the GeoW HUD, which is laughable. No one should care though, that game looks like a joke from top to bottom.

God Of War is a rip off of Ninga Gaiden and Devil May Cry. It is just like when Doom came out and everybody called every single first person shooter a doom rip off and all sandbox games are called GTA rip offs. It is a GENRE.

Dante's Inferno rips off the GOW hud, too then. Looks identical. Same colours and everything.

[QUOTE="mrarmyman48"][QUOTE="pyromaniac223"] Why do lemmings care that Quantum is a ripoff of Gears?SparkyProtocol
because they dont get to play the game

Wow. I think I am starting to build an immunity when it comes to cows jarating be off. I guess it is because I've been here for a sorta long time. I will hopefully be getting DI day one. If I can say one thing that it tops GoW in with the very little footage we've seen, it has to be the environment and atmosphere.

im sorry was I mistaken? I could have sworn the game wasnt comming to xbox 360, so tell me how I was wrong in saying lemmings dont get to play the game? No need to get personal lol.

Also the combat reminds me a bit more of DMC than GOW the button sequences remind me all to well of GOW though.

What? I think you need to watch the video again because to me it looks pretty much nothing like devil may cry. the god of war similarities are all over the place thoe.

The combat to me looks more like DMC but I guess most people are focusing on button sequence kills. I agree the part with the minotaur guy looked straight out of GOW but the part where he did the spin through the small guys and the way he attacks in the air all to reminds me of DMC.

You can see god of war in there, the jumping on and slicing/stabing the guy while climbing up, the finishing moves where he decapitates the dude looks just like the button mashing finishers from Gow.

Even the way the fight was resolved looked like a GOW boss fight. Where the environment was used to kill the boss. Which is unlike DMC or NG or even HS. The GOW similiarties are there.

But I'll still play the game because it looks awesome.

Oh yea I'm not denying that it looks alot like GOW, which I said the button sequences remind me of, but the overall combat reminds me more of DMC.

that gameplay look exactly like GOW2 beginning when your fighting that large statue.
