If you buy a video game console before buying an HDTV, you're doing it wrong. Very wrong.

I guess I'm doing it wrong then. I have a standard def tv, a PS3, and a Wii. What's so necessary about playing games in HD?
I got a HDTV because I was tired of not being able to see what was going.
Examples..dead rising or mass effect 2.
I only switched over last year :P so a fair portion of my gaming was done on an SDTV and inheriently a tighter budget as i wasnt in employment at that time only got an HD telly when i got a job.

But the kicker is HD isnt necessary for anything? bout all telly channels still transmit in SD resolution.

HD is necessary for a 1080p/720p HD viewing experience ;).

oh... I don't really use my TV for anything else other than gaming, but can't it be applied to everything you can view on a TV? Why is it so necessary to watch television or movies in HD?

Well for one, the font in half my games is literally unreadable on an sdtv (the wii probably actually looks better on a sdtv though).

yes but the point im making is TV still transmits in SD and those programes/channels are downscaled to suit.So it really isnt a necessity, Freeview in the UK doesnt have a single HD channel yet im sure and im still running a sky SD box since i still think its not worth the extra to get HD despite owning an hd telly because its an extra £10 a month i cant afford right now

Yeah that's true. Some of my games are really hard to read on standard def. Why do they purposely make the text so small some times?
P.S. It's awesome that you bought Rayman Origins. That game deserves sales. It's absolutely fantastic
You do know they make CRT HDTVs. Anyway I was gaming on a SDTV until recently. I really don't get why people care so much about the HD aspect of the new tvs. It seems fairly minor improvement compared to widescreen and progessive scan.

You make valid points, but you own an HDTV so you know how much better it looks.
It's just a much more satisfying gaming experience to play on an HDTV.

OT: hell yeah, i'm absolutely addicted to rayman origins right now, this game may just be the perfect platformer. my GOTY bar none right now.

you gotta be doing something wrong then. going from a standard tv to an hdtv is far more than just a minor improvement. it's a whole different ball game.

This. I couldnt see any of the text in games. It was annoying being at the main menu and couldnt read anything, and then playing online and not seeing the players name clearly

I completely agree with you... Just look at what my sig says. Rayman Origins is disturbingly under appreciated. I'm addicted to the game as well. I have 244/246 protoons and I fully intend to get all speed run and lum medals as well. I should get an HD tv just to respect the amazing artists in the game and get the full experience
I played a 360 on a SD TV from July 2008 to early Janurary 2011. I had no problems other than the text in Dead Rising (just required a lot of squinting).
After stepping up to 720p and 600Hz, I definitely wouldn't go back. But there is no rush to upgrade.

haha yeah, i'm at around 160 electoons right now. i'm trying to complete as many medallions as i can before i finish the final boss. i also need to get the final four skull teeth.
but yes, you should definitely get an hdtv just for this game alone, it's like playing a high resolution painting. just beautiful.
I have a CRT atm. Will hopefully be getting a near lagless Asus for xmas or atleast soon after that.

I did it wrong until the summer of 2010. By then some games had options impossible to read because they were only designed for HD TVs. Got one, now I don't know how I gamed in 480p.

well i'm sure plenty of gamers started off this gen with a standard tv (like myself), as most of us used them last gen. once you go HD though, there's no going back.

I don't know how decent your SD TV is, but mine was horrible. When I was playing GTA IV, and I got a text message on the cell phone, I couldn't even read it, the letters were so small blurry, and if I got closer to the tv, I could just see the lines going across the screen as the image was projected.
That TV was pretty old though, I'm sure there are better looking SD TVs that were newer than that one where reading text on a lot of these games wouldn't be such a problem. But that's why it was pretty much necessary for me at least.
